Hello All,
The Friday before JO's, Feb 8th, we will be having an in-house electric foil
competition. Anyone who is going to JO's, or who just likes to hook up and
bout away is welcome.
We will be observing strict USFA rules and dress code. That means no bare
shins, no shorts, etc...However, you may wear jeans, but only if you don't
have knickers. We can provide limited electrical equipment if you are
lacking...but we make no guarantees of fit or function...
If you are a beginner/intermediate student and are not yet bouting, or just
beginning to bout, I would encourage you to attend to observe, or help out,
during this competition. There will be no instructional class taking place
during the competition.
If you are planning on participating, please send me an email so we can
prepare the proper amount of strips.
Thanks and we'll see you soon,
April Kauffman

Greeting all
In review of the Sept 2 event at Formula Fitness, an Idea occurred to me. I
know that many people compete on the weekends, but I¹m wondering there might
be interest in creating a Sunday Clinic. Formula Fitness has offered up
their space if there is interest in this for the same $10 per fencer as the
initial event. I would view this as an opportunity to work specifics with
people that you do not fence every day. I¹m willing to try to organize this
and keep a monitor in the room if there is real interest. More of meeting
place atmosphere and less of a class. Put some feelers out to your people
and let me know.
Cheers
Sincerely
Morgan Shea

Subject: 8TH ANNUAL FENCEATHON ON OCT. 19-20, 2007
September 12, 2007
Dear Fencing Enthusiast:
Feeling behind the 8 ball?
When it comes to the Chesapeake Fencing Club, that’s
just where you want to be!
The magical 8-ball predicts a lot of fencing and good
times as we prepare for our 8th annual
FENCE-A-THON
2007!
A
fun-and-fundraising event to benefit CFC and The Sisters Academy of
Baltimore, FENCE-A-THON 2007 will
begin the evening of Friday, October 19th with registration at 8 p.m. and
conclude on Saturday, October 20th at 9 a.m. Actual fencing should run from 9
p.m. Friday through 9 a.m. Saturday.
We will be fencing ALL NIGHT
LONG! To accommodate the enormous response we expect (more than
60 fencers competed last year!), we are holding FENCE-A-THON 2007 in
the gymnasium at
Liberty
Christian
School at
11303 Liberty Road
in Owings Mills. Registration is $25 (pre-register by October
12th and receive a free commemorative CFC 8th Fenceathon
T-shirt with logo created by Crowolf Design) and is open to all
fencers.
Realize we’re not talking a tournament here.
This is a fencing marathon! Like a benefit walk, we
need you to get your family, friends, co-workers, enemies, people on prison
work-release, whomever, to sponsor
you -- $1 a bout, $2, $5, whatever people are willing to give. The more bouts
you fence, the more money you raise! (Lump sum donations also
accepted. Please make checks payable to the Chesapeake Fencing Club).
Trophies will be awarded for most bouts fenced and most
bouts directed. All bouts must be fenced according to USFA rules, just like a
tournament.
If you’d
rather not fence, but would like to direct, same rules apply. People will
sponsor you for the number of bouts you direct. Of course, whether you’re
fencing or directing, the more sponsors you find, the more bucks come in to
CFC and The Sisters Academy of Baltimore! (The Sisters
Academy of Baltimore is a Catholic community-centered middle school located in
southwest
Baltimore
City for girls in grades
5-8).
In addition to the usual
food, door prizes, music and videos, we’ve invited our friends from the
Mid-Atlantic Society for Historical Swordsmanship to
demonstrate their special brand of swordplay.
Parents, please be advised that since this is a benefit
fencing event, not a sleepover, we don’t want to overtax the kids. You
will need to complete a medical waiver form in order
to participate. This may be obtained by contacting Dan Collins at 410-332-9714
or via email at prguydc@.... Forms will be available day of the event,
but MUST be
signed and turned in to the Registration Desk by close of registration Oct.
19th at 9 p.m.
Our gallant FENCE-A-THON 2007 event organizers are
scouring
Baltimore ’s business community for donated
items that will serve as DOOR PRIZES throughout the evening. If you also know
a business, vendor, etc., that might donate a prize, let Dan Collins know at
410-332-9714 or email him at prguydc@.... Tell your fencing friends
about our event! You want
to bring some sodas, chips, food, pizza, heck, we’ll take it, we’re not shy!
If you have questions about this event, please call Ray
Gordon at 410-532-7445 or Dan Collins at 410-332-9714. Come be a part of
history; others may try and imitate us, but ours is the FIRST
FENCEATHON! We look forward to seeing you at the FENCE-A-THON
2007!
Sincerely,
Dan

I have decided to take a week off work to come back to Lancaster to
spend time with friends and family. I'm also going to visit my
relatives in NJ at some point, but if possible I'd like to go to that
invitational on Sept 2nd. Anyone else going as well? It would be
great to see everyone again.
Let me know, and hopefully I'll be around soon!

I just got off the phone with the Rec:
Would Monday evenings work for anyone/everyone as additional practice time?
It is the only extra day we can get into the Barn.
They need to know if we would like to have it, and if so:
would we use it for group lessons, or private lessons, or both.
Times would be approximately the same 6:30 PM - 10:00 PM
Please email me back with your comments/suggestions etc.
cmedalis@...
Thank you!!

Sounds like it was a good investment, Chris. The Red Cross stuff is
very important stuff for referees to have, as we have seen from the
Pan Am Games, where a fencer was struck in the lung during practice.
Last year one of my friends on the team was also had his lung
punctured (wearing my named lame! Yikes.) Link for the Pan Am
incident is here:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/more/07/11/panam.stabbing.ap/index.html
Right now I'm working with devices used in the hospital, and I get the
chance to converse with the medical staff. I tell them about our
sport and I get interesting conversations going. One of my
conversations with a med student led into how to help a fencer who has
just been somehow injured with a blade. It's critical that the
closest person to the fencer (usually the referee, because you won't
have a med team at small events) be able to stabilize the wound, keep
everyone calm, and know what to do next.
Glad to hear that you're a certified ref. Perhaps I should call you
"Sir" from now on? =)
