Hi Nanette
Please forward that original email to anyone who may be interested.
Tonight is our first night
I had email the father again asking him to call me 782-5388 if had any
questions.
If we get enough member I will require USFA membership then perhaps have
the club be USFA too. However that may be many months away if at all.

After a long summer, Dave and I have decided to change the focus of the
club. Our reasons are professional, personal and where each of us is in our
personal lives.
We have decided that the club should focus on saber fencing. Specifically, the
training will continue at the Carlisle Stuart Community Center, once a week. It
will be either Tuesday or Thursdays, but that has yet to be determined. A
survey will be done on when the highest attendance can be achieved.
We will not be a USFA sanctioned club in the forseeable future, but that is
not ruled out either. We request that the members are USFA members but are not
required at this time.
The club will be called the, “Carlisle Fencing Club.” Because equipment
will be an issue, the club will be registered with Absolute Fencing to obtain
club discounts for uniforms and weapons. There will be more information coming
out on this issue soon.
Floor fees will be $ 10 per night. Should we maintain a sizable and consistent
attendance; the floor fees could be decreased. College Students will be
required a floor fee of $1.
At this time, we will not be accepting completely new students to fencing.
Students with previous experience in foil and epee and saber will be welcomed.
The class/training will be flexible predicated on who comes for that evening.
The basic format will be 20-30 minutes of drills and instruction and then
bouting.
Members are asked to be ready to start by 8 PM. Those who attended this past
summer saber training understand what we asking, the attendants at the
Recreation center are prompt about closing on time. So, we really only have an
hour.
We have scheduled Tuesday, Sept 1, 8-9 PM for saber training for those who
are interested.
Please feel to contact Tony at his email address TonyA@... and/or his
office at 782-5388 should you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter

NEW D
Min no. of fencers: 15; must include at least 4 E's or higher
Rated fencers: 2 E's or higher must finish in top 8
Classifications awarded:
1: D
2-4: E
OLD D
Min no. of fencers: 15
Rated fencers: no requirements
Classifications awarded:
1: D
2-4: E
Rationale:
Under the current system, it is possible to hold a sanctioned event consisting
of 15 or more unrated novice fencers (typically with less than one year of
competitive experience.) The top four finishers will earn classifications,
regardless of their skill level. This has the effect of “devaluing” the D
and E classifications, since there is no requirement that more skilled fencers
compete and be encountered in the later rounds.
All of the other classification groups require the presence of a minimum number
of rated fencers. This change applies the same criterion to Group D1 events.

The Fencing Club of Lancaster will be *CLOSED* on August 4th
I will be in Colorado Springs for the USFencing Coach's College program for the
week.
We we resume meeting in the "Barn" on August 11th.
Thanks to everyone who helped out with the games. Curtis Huey and Chris Medalis
deserve a big thank you. They organzied and refed the event with no pay. They
went without meals so we could keep the events moving. They were patient with my
endless questions.
I would also like to thank all the fencers who stepped in to ref: Harry Adams,
Carolyn Halliwell, Terrie Doom, Tony Alvarez, Giovanni Facco, Josh Herring, Tim
Stuhldreher, Andy Schiffman, Semion Kiriakidi, Ed Ploy and I apologize if I
forgot someone.
Thanks to Hannah Emig, Kim Bleecker, Doug Schrom, Andy Halliwell, Carol Adams
who helped with registration, ran errands and jumped in wherever necessary.
Thanks to Millersville University Fencing Guild, York Fencing Club and Lebanon
YMCA Fencing Club and Chris Medalis for loaning equipment for the event.
I also want to personally thank every fencer, ref, helper and families for your
patience with me. This was my first multi-event tournament and I definitely made
some mistakes. But I did learn from them. Thanks for being a part of my learning
curve. I promise it will not be, as Curtis so poetically calls it, a "flat line
learning curve".

When you enter the Keystones, they will try to charge you a $7 per person fee
for spectators. DO NOT PAY IT! Keystone did not give me any warning of this fee.
I found out at 5pm this evening when we were setting up. Needless to say, I had
an adverse reaction.
The agreement between Keystone and myself at this point is NO ONE coming into
fencing will be charge. If anyone questions you, tell them you are family of a
fencer or call me cell at 968-2122. I will gladly come out and handle it.
I am very disappointed in the Keystone management for pulling this. I have been
working with them for several months trying to get everything settled. I even
talked to my Keystone contact yesterday and no mention was made of a spectator's
fee.
Please let me know if you have any problems with them. How they handle this will
impact how willing I am to work with them again next year. I apologize for an
inconvenience.

The USFA is considering implementing a new policy called "Stay and Play". As a
USFA member or supporter, you need to educate yourself about this program.
The info is located at: http://usfencing.org/news/article/14494
Make sure you download and read the overview and sample waiver at the end of the
artilce.
Then please email Christine Strong Simmons at USFA with your reaction. Her
contact info is included in the article. Whether your support the idea or not,
the USFA needs to hear how the membership feels.
If you have previously had an unfortunate experience with THS, the company USFA
wants to contract with, please make sure you include those specifics in your
email. Also if you have had a positive experience, tell them that too.
The USFA membership needs to hear from all members both in support and against
before they make their decision.
Please do the following.
1. Go to http://usfencing.org/news/article/14494
2. Read the article, the overview and waiver
3. Email USFA with your vote on the Stay and Play contract with THS
Thank you.

We need volunteers to help with the set up and running of the Keystone Games.
Although the Harrisburg Division is not officially associated with this
tournament, it is in our backyard so it would be great if we could help it run
smoothly.
This is what we need and when:
Friday July 25th - 5pm - to help do major set up - laying floors (snap together
tiles)
Saturday July 26th - 8am - help set up any last minute things
at end of night, quick check before closing up
Sunday July 27th - 8am - to help set up any last minute things
5pm or after - tear down and clean up (take up
floor, pack all scoring and strip equipment)
During the Saturday and Sunday, we will also need runners who can take info back
and forth from the strip to the bout table. Volunteers to time bouts or do
writing for refs will be very appreciated by some refs. If you aren't fencing
and can help out a ref, please offer. It will make everything go quicker.
At registrations times, especially the bigger events, I may need another set a
hands/eyes at the registration table.
Finally we need a few people who are willing over the course of both days to
stand near the entrance to the fencing area and greet people. Direct fencers to
the registration table, answer general questions from non fencing people who
wonder in, and basically show that we are open to spectators.
If you are available, please let me know what days/times and if there is a
particular job you want to do or if you want to help but cannot do a specific
thing (for instance, I know a 16 yr old volunteer (conscript) who cannot lift
anything heavy with her right arm but I can find other jobs for her.
The Keystones are a good showcase for the people of the Harrisburg Division. It
is true that they are not a division touranment. The games are also not
authorized nor sanctioned by the Harrisburg Chair and the division is not
getting any money out of it. But the fencers who come are not going care whether
it is an official division event. They will just know it is in our division's
territory. So it would be great if we could all help run a nice tournament and
maybe make some new friends for our division (and win back some old ones).
Thanks for any help you can give.
