It was a strong turnout (34 entries), but with a much more even strength curve
than last week's marathon E.
We split into 4 pools of 7 and one of 6, fenced in one flight at both CFC and
TWC.
My pool was not too bad, a C some D's, E's and U's. I had only two vicories in
my pool, but I had not planned on winning much, I was concentrating primarily
on fencing smarter, keeping the hand, controlling the distance, and not wasting
attacks. Most of my touches came from riposte, and stop-hit, due to paying
closer attention to distance and timing.
I encountered Ray Gordon of CFC in my first DE round, and at 1:47 into the
first period we were halted for "Manifest Passivity", first time I have
encountered that penalty, which advanced us directly to the minute break and
then the second period. I though we were feeling out distance and setting each
other up, but the director saw it as a utter lack of fencing (shrug).
Ray won 12-7 at the end of the 3rd period, but I had landed a lot of nice
ripostes and 2nd intention actions. He was catching me flat-footed with an
extremely well-timed advance lunge that was just gorgeous to watch from the
sidelines...
Things learned: distance saves you more than parry, riposte gets directors on
your side, stay sharp on your feet.
I think Ray wants to see us back there in 2 weeks for their next event, I think
they like having us around, and we're making a name for ourselves.
