Fencing events for young athletes
Recently, several families and divisions have raised questions about USFA rules
regarding minimum age requirements for local and regional open events.
The same rules apply to all USFA events that do not carry a specific age
restriction (youth events, cadets, juniors, and veteran events)whether they are
NAC or national championship events, or run by a club, division, or section.
To compete in a USFA-sponsored open event, all fencers must be at least 13 years
old on January 1 of the competitive season in question.
This rule was developed to be consistent with age requirements set by the
international fencing community. It is part of a developmental framework
designed to give young athletes appropriate competitive bouts as they grow.
If you are interested in finding good competitions for fencers under age 13, we
encourage you to visit the USFA Regional Youth Circuit webpage:
http://www.usfaryc.org/
There you will find information about youth tournaments in your area. If you
would like to host a Youth Circuit tournament, please contact your Regional
Coordinator or email Andrea Lagan, the Youth Programs Manager for the USFA.

NAC Tournament Survey is now online
Many USFA members have already completed the Tournament Task Force survey posted
on the national website. If you have not, please take a few moments to link to
and complete this questionnaire. Your experiences and opinions are needed to
help the Task Force complete its assignment from the USFA Board of Directors.
More information is available with the survey.
You will find the survey at the USFA website until February 1, 2006. Please go
to:
http://www.USFencing.org/do/contentItem;jsessionid=78419D8B26D63A5984B7E5F05F1D9\
BEC?contentId=1855
Initial results will be compiled and presented to the Board of Directors at its
meeting during the Junior Olympics tournament. A copy of the material presented
to the Board will be available at the USFA website in February.
Thank you for your participation.
