[MU Fencing Guild] [Fwd: Re: Tom Dann Epee Extravaganza]

Jon,

Thanks for writing. I was looking for you - you missed a great show.

MUFG, Z, SJ,

This will be a short after-action.

There were 23 fencers. The format was four pools of six and one pool
of five. I was in the pool of five, but I was not the only C in the
pool. Out of the five there were three women. These were mostly young
people. I thought they were university fencers. They were 16-17 high
school students. And they were dead serious fencers too. One gave me
the compliment? after, "freakishly long lunge." This turned out to be
a very tough pool. My record was 3-1 with 5-2, 5-3, 5-4, 3-5; I was
beat bad by the other C. My low indicators put me in seed position #8
(or 9, I forget). They fit us into a table of 32 giving me a bye into
the round of 16.

I fenced Spar. I got the jump on the first few touches then was able
to hold out a 1 - 2 touch lead, not very comfortable, right down to
the 13-14 point. I thought I was going to win it with crossover-lunge,
but Spar escaped. I won with counter-time, a false attack
counter-parry and repost against the attempt to time hit (or counter
attack). This put me in the top 8 and wins a trophy sword. My final
bout was against Pho. He has doubled in strength since I beat him at
FEX about two years ago. He sports a brand new B05, and seemed to know
how to use it. I could not seem to come up with anything to stop him
from hitting me. He hit me on my attack, he hit me when I was still,
he hit me when I moved, he hit me when I was trying to get him to try
to hit me (duh) and when I was trying to stop him from hitting me. The
result was 7-15 and that put finished me at #6. I still have allot to
learn about Epee.

The competition turned out a B strength and the Gold finisher eared
his B. Now that I think about it. I'll bet Eric could have won this.
Anyway, there were several other ratings jumps and a presentation
ceremony that included some words on former fencer Tom Dan. Thanks to
the FEX for hosting and we'll see you all that the Rob Roy!

So much for the short report, sorry about that.

Cheers!
CLF

unfortunately did not make it. I was called into work late Saturday
afternoon after driving North Friday night. I did not have the gusto
to make the 3 hour drive again Sunday. I apologize if you were
expecting spectator support. I keep high hopes to make my spectator
debue at an event before turning 50.
