Yeah, it would suck to fence us. We were having such a blast at
Jason Paul (saberist) trying to fence foil that I don't think anyone
cared. It must have pissed off everyone else though, but because of
us being "defending national champions", they didn't argue or try
anything.
It was a big put-down on the non-varsity teams, which I don't think
is right. Then again, a lot goes on at these things that the
rulebook clearly states should NOT, but does anyway. Unfortunately,
it's like the government.
I didn't fence foil or saber, and the epee coach was not letting
anyone else fence epee. He only let our top guy fence another
weapon. I am pretty sure the epee coach is the most strict and
probably did get a bit angry at the other weapons.
One of our guys should have been black-carded three times during a
bout with Michigan, and another during a bout with Notre Dame.
When it becomes a team sport at an event rather than one or two
people from a club, every bout takes on a whole new perspective.
For the first time in my life, I had more than two people cheering
for me during a bout. I had 30+ people at one time, and it was
exhilarating to the point of trying everything in your power not to
lose.
I'll send a report as well from our home meet this weekend. I'm
eager to practice with you guys in March.
