This is a good article was written on the subject of the FIE's
proposed plan to change Foil for the better. His description of
common techniques today are very insightful.
He says, "Arcing flicks, marching footwork, and the tactics to
defend against them were originally borrowed from sabre. These moves
are undoubtedly prospering in foil, but the FIE's language when
justifying the rule changes contains terms like "foil's specific
character" and "foil heritage" — they're looking for something
foily, which is tip and Right of Way."
This was everything at the Junior Olympics. I did not see one
disengage, because it was all "beat-prep-screen-prep-screen-prep-
flick". The waving of the blade down and up apparently kept right
of way for the directors, even though it would be considered as an
attack which fails, and then another attack which fails, and not one
constant attack.
