MUFG, there were only 11 entered at this event. 2 U's, 1 E, 2 D's, 4
C's, 1 B (Pirott) and one A (Millegan). We fenced two rounds, one
seeding round for ranking and one as direct elimination. For the
seeding round the field of 11 was broken into two pools one of 5 and
one of 6. I was in the pool of 5. This means that I have to fence the
other four members of my pool in round-robin style, in five-touch
encounters. My first bout was against the E fencer 5-0. My second bout
was against a C fencer Whitteg (who finished #2), he edged me out 4-5.
My next bout was against A fencer and fencing master of the BFC Bruce
Millegan (who finished #1). I held him off for the first minute of
fencing and was winning 2-1. Bruce made up his mind that he was done
playing with me and made the next four touches in a row without an
answer from me, 2-5. My last bout was against one of the D fencers. He
put up oneheckofa fight but I was able to keep him under control, 5 -
3. My record was 2 and 2 with 16 touches scored and 14 touches
received - that's 16 - 14 = +2 indicator points. This put me in
position #6 going into the final D.E. round. My first opponent was #11
position. I beat her 15-3, without breaking a sweat. My second
opponent was the left handed B fencer John Pirott. I was trying to
hold him off by attacking. If he gets momentum then he fences faster
and tries to run away with the score. The score was 4-4 early on but
5-10 by the end of the first period. In the second period he was
irrepressible and was out scoring me 2:1 on his attacks. We ended 8-15
; that's a higher score than I usually achieve against him but I have
to do more to figure out how to break him from coming forward ALL the
TIME. We will meet again.
