Hi Elaine,
Yes, please ask questions. We'll all answer as best we can. You have stated the difference
between between C/T fear and CAT fear. When you write "Control the fear" you are
saying that it might not be OK to feel the fear. In other words bury the fear.
There is a lot of discussion about which comes first behavior or emotion. Emotions
are closely tied to behavior. For example, if you smile it is hard to feel sad.
In CAT, we will take the emotion out of the equation. We will deal only with behavior.
Behavior is that which we can see.
When we see the horse present a behavior that is aggressive or implies fear, we will
change something. We want to find the place where the fear is not apparent in the
behavior. That is what is meant by "below threshold". We go to the place where
the behavior shows itself. That is our threshold boundary. Next we go to the
below threshold point. The horse may be in behavior natural at that point.
Here, we will wait until the horse shows us some kind of behavior that
indicated behavior towards relaxation or calmness.
Typical behaviors might be simply blinking, breathing, a yawn or
a relaxation of the ears. At that point we take the fearful thing
away even further. That is the reward. Relaxation and calmness
makes the thing go away.
