Several crews have been calling looking for some boats to use at the
Youth Invitational in Cincinnati, June 11-12, 2005. If you have a boat
that can be thrown onto a trailer or if you can assist in any way, we
would truly appreciate it. Most of these programs have never been to
the YI and would appreciate the help. Thanks - Jody Pope 317-237-5651

It has been quite a few years since I was trying out for the Junior
National Team, so I can't quite remember the rules regarding the
ages of the participants. I know that 18 year old kids can
participate because most high school seniors will turn 18 before the
race happens in late summer after their senior year, but I am not
sure when the limits are on when they turn 18. Is the age
requirement:

a. Not turning 18 before the Jan 1st of the year of the race in
question;

b. Not turning 18 before the previous year's race;

c. or something else entirely?

Thanks for your help. I have three rowers currently in the running
on erg scores but are confused about their eligibility for next year.

Thanks

Nat Schindler

I coach at a small private school and I am lucky to get enough kids to
have a full boat but was wondering what other schools do in regard to
height, weight, age requirements to be on the team.

We used to use inflatables, and I found they had too major drawbacks:

1). they leave quite a large wake, a problem on the Charles river.
Once you got one up and planing, it zips along with little wake, but
at that point you are going too fast to coach. which leaddds me to...

2). the size we had, which was fairly small, with 8 hp or 9.9 engines,
went slow, then at a really steep angle, then would finally build up
enough headway to plane at which point it would go too fast...so I
found it difficult to maintain the "right" speed the go along with my
crew. A larger hull with a bigger engine would be fine,

The USRowing safety video has a good demonstartion of this. Then you can
take a small boat out when the water temp is warmer and practice. Just be
careful, a boat can go through a little more trama then one would think
flipping.

This allows a small club the ability to row all levels of rowers during the same turnout and keeps the frustration to a minimum.  Of course you have to teach flip drills but that can be fun.

Good luck.  Corinne, ARC

The problem with having "only" 3 rec rowers is that no competitive rower will want to race with them in a 4+/X.  Our approach is to deal with the issue openly and with consequences, but not penalties.

We have just grown large enough to divide the team into competitive and rec rowers.  The rec rowers are there for a workout, skill improvement and the joy of rowing - much like many adult rowers.  Their attendance requirements are more slack, and they are not guaranteed a seat in regattas.  That way I won't get annoyed with them, the rowers can enjoy themselves, and parental expectations are not excessive.

Unfortunately, a mixed crew of 20 may not really allow for recreational and competitive divisions.  In that case you may want to look at these three options:
1    Lower your expectations of these 3
2    Find out why they are rowing.  Is it parental expectations, social contact, skill, college application?  Do they really want to be there?
3    Find out why they don't work hard.  What would motivate them to support their boat?  Do they feel useless?  Some of our rowers with low erg scores assume they cannot get better.  Of course, these are the very rowers whose improvement can increase boat speed the most - a point I try to make repeatedly.
3    Uninvite them for next season.

Hi Everyone,

I have a group of 20 Juniors here in the Midwest.  The river was
running too fast and we could not go out in boats. So we used the
Ergs.  5 x 500 meters to get the blood pumping. 20 Juniors in a
line. All the Guys were sweating and getting into it....most of the
girls were with the exception of 3.  Who were not showing any signs
of sweat, effort, stress....

I asked them what the problem was, and they had no answer...they
just backed off the pressure as they started to feel uncomfortable,
hot or out of breath.  They all knew they were 'busted'....but did
nothing to change it.

All three have rowed/ raced and are excellent rowers. I did not
persue the issue any further and decided to keep an eye on the
situation.....anyone have any ideas? ...solutions.. suggestions?

This is not an isolated incident, these three rowers rarely sweat
running,  out in a boat or in a race.

I would question whether all 3 are really excellent "rowers" if they don't want
to row
hard. That's inconsistent with my definition of excellent rowers. Tell them to
try out for
thr chess team.

We set a minimum age at 12 only because the kids need to be big enough to carry the equipment safely.  We have allowed younger kids when they are motivated and have good attitudes, but the size becomes an issue when they can't progress as quickly as the older kids.  That said, some of our best rowers are 12 years old.  They row singles and can put the others to shame with their technique.

Our program starts everyone in singles.  Once they have become proficient with maneouvering the boat, balancing and can row with confidence and power, they progress to the doubles and quads.  We will put them in sweep boats only after they demonstrate good timing in the quads.  Our boats rarely have set issues and the speed that they learn sweep rowing is amazing.  The problem is convincing them that sweep boats are fun too.

This allows a small club the ability to row all levels of rowers during the same turnout and keeps the frustration to a minimum.  Of course you have to teach flip drills but that can be fun.

Good luck.  Corinne, ARC

I believe that you can help parents to understand your decisions and to understand the sport in general, but I am strongly against getting parents involved in coaching the kids. I have dealt with hockey and soccer parents who think they know everything about the sport and end up hurting the team. I think it is a slippery slope.

Like Dustin said, I would let them know that the top ergs are going to start off in the boat and the next erg is going to get the next seat race, etc, etc. The better the erg score, the more chances you get to be in the boat. If they are not motivated after that, why would you want them in the boat anyway, regardless of technique?

Good luck.

John

    1.    Grow the program so they have to fight to earn a seat.  Tough challenge but the ultimate solution.

    2.    Talk with parents about the twinkie seat race concept, or whatever it is called - sometimes a boat moves faster with no one in the seat.  But they may criticize you instead of their kids.

    3.    Teach the concept that there is no such thing as an "excellent rower" who does not pull.  That is an oxymoron.  I love to see kids row nicely, too, and have had some like these who just won't pull.  It is not a problem with a solution short of starting a separate recreational rowing program for them, in my view.  It is enough to drive you from coaching.  Spend your time with the kids with spunk.

Hi Everyone,

Here is a situation that I do not know how to deal with.....I hope
you guys can offer some direction....

This is not an isolated incident, these three rowers rarely sweat
running,  out in a boat or in a race.

thanks
Charles

The Annapolis Rowing Club Junior program needs a head coach and assistant coach starting this summer or fall. We have a great group of about 60 high-school age kids, race-worthy equipment, and an awesome group of parents. Leadership, maturity, and dedication a must!!  If you know of anyone in the area who may be interested in joining our coaching team, please have them call Jessica at (410) 295-0830.

Years ago we used an inflatable - I think it was a 14 or 16 footer with
either a 9.9 or 15 horse on it - either would be sufficient.
It was fine for coaching - very stable and scooted along the river nicely.
You have to be careful when you try to transfer a kid into a boat or come
close to your crews because they tend to float a bit more. Also, unless
they have seats in them you have to sit on the inflated deck which can be
a bit awkward, but otherwise no problem. Better than running along the
shore.

Welcome to the Youth Listserve-

Please note that you may set the frequency of the communication you
receive. If you prefer to have no emails sent, a daily digest or
every email please adjust your account.

The Youth Advisory Committee has been very busy. Below is an update
on our work this year. To see who serves on the YAC please visit the
USRowing website.

USRowing Youth Advisory Committee Update:

•The rules for petitioning at the National Youth Invite are
constantly being examined for fairness and several have changed this
year.
-USRowing and the YAC will be accepting petitions from crews
submitted by May 25, 2005. The panel will respond to each petition by
May 27, 2005.
-A crew placing second or third at a registered qualifying regatta
to attend the Youth Invitational. Petitions will only be accepted and
reviewed if they are within the following seconds of the winner.
(8+/4+/4x within 4 seconds, 2x/1x within 6 seconds)
-The composition of the petition panel will be as follows: the three
at-large members and the regional representative. In the event of a
tie the final input will but come from the YAC Chairman.
-In order to further reduce the number of petitions each year,
starting in 2005 invitations will roll down. In the event one of the
two qualifying crews chooses not attend the Youth Invitational, the
entry opportunity will roll down to the third place boat.

•This is the second year for the trial Lightweight 4's events
at the
Youth Invite. It is popular and it seems likely that the YAC will
vote to make it a permanent event in June.

•The YAC is recommending to the NGB that the rules of rowing be
adjusted to allow YNI winners to be awarded national titles. We feel
the Nationals in June aren't a true reflection of "youth
national
champions"

•Over the winter the YAC developed a list of criterion for
hosting
the Youth National Invite after discussions of moving the race west
or to Oak Ridge. The committee has no plans to move the race at this
time but we wanted to develop the criteria in case it ever needed to
move.

•We are examining the mission and focus of the three youth/junior
rowing committee's in light of governance changes on the USRowing
board.

Charles,

Might check out Consignment Equipment Sales and/or Auctions where you might be able to get a decent flatbed trailer at an inexpensive price.  Then could look into having racks added by a weld shop.

Hi,
We are a small Junior program in the midwest. We are looking for a
trailer manufacturer who offers or makes rowing boat trailers. The
trailers we have found on the 'Vespoli' website are too expensive and
too large for our program. We don't own enough boats to fill one up!
We have tried local trailer builders but they all come in around $7000+
Any used or unwanted trailers, ideas or contacts would be welcome.
Thanks

Charles,

Have you tried your local high school welding class? I've used ours to maintain
our trailer and they've done a wonderful job. Our original trailer was donated
by a local metal fabrication company, so there's another thought. They made it
from a dual axle flat bed and welded the uprights as supports.

Good Luck.
