If there are any regulations relating to chaperone ratios with high
school aged kids, I'd very much like to hear about it because my
program would definitely be in violation thereof. We did away with
parent chaperones on overnight trips some years ago, finding them to
generally be more of a hindrance than a help. The official chaperone
duties fall on the coaches and, if there are parents along on the
trip, as there usually are, they fill in the cracks on an unofficial
and wholly voluntary basis. All of the discipline, room-checking,
PDA-busting and wake up-calling falls on the coaches. As such, our
ratio is usually in the neighborhood of 1 coach per 15 athletes, or
roughly 1 coach per 4 rooms.
This may be a function of how our program is structured, with no
parent board, advisory committee or really any sort of organization
whatsoever. We let them take care of the food. So they get to decide
whether to put blueberries or chocolate chips in the pancakes. Beyond
that, we like them where they are - on the beach, cheering for their
kids.
