Janna,
I coach a high school program in Southern California and I've been
using current members of my team as coaching assistants for my summer
learn-to-row camps for years. They're always really enthusiastic and
have been an invaluable part of what we do, especially the cox'ns. I
agree with the other respondents in that a piece of paper and the
proven ability to navigate a multiple choice test do not a coach make.
My feeling is that if your experienced rowers or recent alums know
their stuff, enjoy communicating it to the newbies and your
organization has no legal objection to it, why not use them? As my old
karate teacher used to say, "Whatever works!"

>> Our club had it's first Summer Rowing Camp this summer and it was a
>> great success. We had a nice turn out, and all the campers had fun
>> and want to continue rowing. We had one adult coach and three helper
>> coaches. Two of the helper coaches were were high school grads, going
>> into college, one just completed his freshman year at college. All
>> three helper coaches have attended the USRowing SE Youth Development

>> I'm wondering if other clubs use young people to help teach their

>> suggestions that have worked for your camps that you can pass along?
