Re: [youthrowing] rowing camps

Hi Jan,

I am a high school senior at my local high school.  I am also a coxswain and rower as well for the local rowing club.  This year we had a rowing camp where it was just sculling. I was able to go out in the launch with my coach on days that we didn't take out a coxed boat and help give suggestions to the new rowers.  Not only do i do that, but I cox the master women and men every weekend and they are very receptive to the feedback that I give them.  I think that both experiened coxswains and rowers are invaluable to helping a rowing camp run because they can with the teaching, but they can also help the new rowers see what they can acheive and that anybody can enjoy the sport and have fun.
Thanks,
Roxanne Fogelman

Subject: [youthrowing] rowing camps

Our club had it's first Summer Rowing Camp this summer and it was a
great success. We had a nice turn out, and all the campers had fun
and want to continue rowing. We had one adult coach and three helper
coaches. Two of the helper coaches were were high school grads, going
into college, one just completed his freshman year at college. All
three helper coaches have attended the USRowing SE Youth Development
Camp, and either are rowing in college or plan to, so they have some
qualifications as rowers, even though they were not certified as
coaches.

I'm wondering if other clubs use young people to help teach their
camps? Do you use Juniors or College rowers for coaches? Any tips or
suggestions that have worked for your camps that you can pass along?
Lessons learned?

Thanks,
Jan
