Subject: Questions regarding Junior / Youth Rowing
We have a Junior crew team that sculls. What form of rowing is
considered when colleges look at students; skull or sweep?
Our program survives on parent funding and participation because of
the lack of coaches in the Dallas Texas area. Does anyone know how
and where to get the word out about the need for coaching?
Are there any traveling coaches? And if so are they willing to
conduct a few summer camps?
Last.. am I contacting youth rowing by mistake, and should be
contacting another outlet, could you let me know?
Thanks,
Jan Beeman

Our experience is that colleges are looking for the following (in order):
For scholarship and/or preferential admissions via the coach:
Erg score
Proven racing performance
Experience rowing
Good health
Good attitude
Grades adequate to maintain academic status at that college
For non-scholarship rowers
Good grades and SAT's
High level of performance in an activity (like rowing), including
leadership
Evidence of passion and participation in a demanding activity like rowing
Others may disagree, as we are a small program just outgrowing its
parents-only support history.
Byron Walthall, Head Coach
