Don't assume that if you are renting boats from CU, that they are insured. I would make sure that in your contract with them it clearly states who is responsible for what--including details like whose liability coverage applies if a rented boat fall off a trailer and damages or injures a third party.
This is especially important if the college self insures, which some do.
Early on in our clubs history we established a relationship with an excellent lawyer who has given us great advice about contracts and liability over the years. See if you can find a local supporter or parent and make sure that such things are covered. Fledgling clubs can be only a lawsuit away from oblivion, and if you aren't careful the volunteers and coaches end up being liable.
It's not that much work or even that much money to make sure you and the club are protected.

Thanks Adrienne. I'm pretty sure all our kids are members - rolling the membership cost into the club dues is a good idea.Currently we don't own any of our own equipment (we will most likely continue to rent boats from CU) so we don't need equipment insurance.Jerry

Hi Jerry,You'll also need the kids to be USRowing individual members, in order to race at sanctioned events- like SWRegionals, which I believe the team attended last year. Our little team wraps their USRA memberships into their club dues, so there is little hassle involved.you might about consider boat and trailer insurance for your equipment....you never know.good luck!Adrienne McConnellHumboldt Junior CrewHello:
am a parent helping to start up a junior rowing club in Boulder CO -
Colorado Junior Crew. The club has been around for 3-4 years, but was
always under the auspices of the University of Colorado, as a summer camp.
We've outgrown that arrangement and are now planning to be an independent
club, organized as a 501(c)(3). I've been asked to look into what kind of
insurance we'll need.
We have an organizational membership with USRowing and I know that insurance
coverage comes with that membership. Can anyone tell me from their
experience with similar junior crew teams, is that coverage generally
sufficient or do we need to be looking into additional coverage of any kind
outside what USRowing provides?
Thanks for your help,
Jerry Lumpe
