I think that sounds like a good idea... It would probabley work out well
because it wouldn't take up any more time and if it did, not much. The
only reason it would take up more time is if more people entered since
it was split... but I think that sounds good.. definitley only at
International and Classics though. *Heidi*

Here is my rough draft for the 8&U W/T class proposal that we
discussed at the International. I'm asking everyone to look over it
and tell me what they think about both the concept of the class and
the wording of the proposal. I will submit this and the Team
Competition Proposal (posted on this forum somewhere already) to the
BoD agenda for the meeting in October, and I will hopefully send them
in by the end of this month.

Proposal for Nationally Pointed 8&U Walk/Trot Pleasure Class
Submitted by the Youth Advisory Board to the Board of Directors,
October 2006
There has been a lot of talk recently about an 8&U Walk/Trot Pleasure
Class. The Youth Advisory Board discussed this issue at the
International meeting and came up with the following plan.
A new nationally pointed class would be created, called 8&U Walk/Trot
Pleasure, for both English and Western divisions. Conditions would be
placed on these classes such that any one exhibitor would not be
allowed to participate in both the traditional 3-gait 8&U Pleasure
and the new W/T Pleasure during the same show. However, it would be
possible for an exhibitor to show 3-gait Western Pleasure and
Walk/Trot English or vice-versa.
This class would benefit novice and young riders by providing an
additional pointed class for them to gain show experience before they
are ready to begin loping.
Concerns were raised in the course of the discussion that an 8&U
child could technically graduate to 9-12 without any experience with
loping in the show arena. To ease these concerns, the following
options could were considered and are presented as alternatives or
supplements to this proposal:
1) A warning or notice that 8&U riders should have experience
with loping in the show arena by the time they age out of 8&U
inserted in the rule book with the rule for this class.
2) Instead of a nationally pointed 8&U class, a state-points
only (not submitted to national office) 7&U Walk/Trot Pleasure class
meeting the same specifications as the 8&U class described in this
proposal could be defined in the rule book as an option for
individual state clubs to add to their show programs.
An excerpt from the notes of the 2006 International YAB Meeting:
"We discussed having an 8&U or 12&U Costume class for the larger shows
since some younger kids have a hard time competing with older kids when
presenting stories. This could pertain only to the International and
Classics, where Costume classes are larger and more competitive."
What do you guys think about this issue? Should the national POAC offer
more breakdown of costume classes at the International and perhaps the
Classics? Currently they are divided into 6&U and 18&U divisions, and
by gender. The only option, going by regulations on acceptable class
age divisions- would be to have a 12&U and 13-18 class for each gender,
or a class for each age group.
Opinions?
At the International youth meeting, Midwest Region director Joel
Farrington suggested an Art Contest for the International show. The
idea was well-received, and we decided to go ahead and try it. The
contest would be open to ALL youth attending the show, including
siblings of exhibitors who don't show themselves. There would be no
entry fee, and all types of art from photography to coloring to
sketching or even sculpture would be accepted. The winner in each of
two age divisions (8&U and 9-18) would get a prize.
The contest was not announced at the show (I was afraid of bothering
the announcer!) but we posted the information and rules at the Youth
Booth. No entries were received.
Next year, we'll be better prepared for the event, with a notice in
the magazine's International section and announcements periodically
throughout the week, plus signage at our YouthBooth. I'd like to see
this become an International tradition- and a way for non-showing
kids to participate in something, too.
One thing that we didn't really discuss specifically- how should this
contest be judged? Any ideas?
Sounds like fun... I can't wait until I can leave school early!
lol... Yes, it would help if there was more discussion on here... go
ahead and post anything new stuff anyway, and I'll start getting on here
more.
*Heidi*
Yeah, I'm starting my last year of high school now... It's pretty good so far. I only have to go to school until 1:00, then I get out, so that's been really nice. I have a math class at UCO two nights a week- and it's been easier than I thought so far.
I'll be at the sale, and we will definitely try to have a youth meeting. It's really hard to organize and hold the meeting at the sale, but we'll try. I'm getting proposals ready to send for the BoD meeting, so I will post them all here when I get rough drafts completed and we can talk about them. If anyone talks, that is... ;)
Hey there hasn't been much discussion on here... so I thought I'd post
something... lol.
So how has school been going for everyone?? Hopefully well... this is my
first year in high school and I love it! We have homecoming up in a
less than two weeks too..... and I can't wait for the ridiculous "I need
a date" drama to be over! AGH! I'm not playing any sports but my sister
is on the volleyball team and my brother is playing football.
I haven't done any riding either... I think I'm going to in the next
half hour or so though lol. Is anyone going to the sale?? We aren't
but I kind of want to just to see everyone... but oh well. Well gotta
go ride... *Heidi*
Just thought that I would let everyone know the Ohio Youth will once again be holding its annual freestyle reining exposition on Sept. 2 at Diaomond C Arena about an hour after the regular show ends. It is open to all ages. I've attached a flyer and entry form but I am not sure if it will go through. If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me. Hope to see you there!

Hey Heidi, thanks for stopping by, and sorry about your Internet... I'd probably die without it... ;) Maybe if someone besides me makes a post more people will post too... haha. I just miss how this board used to be, it was fun to talk about stuff with lots of people.
Team contest was an event at the World. In the show schedule there would be extra classes- Team Contest Barrels, Team Contest Horsemanship... etc. With our way we wouldn't have to add new classes, though.
--------
For the equitation classes, I think the rule book is already changed to mandatory patterns for all eq classes at all shows, and it says you don't have to do rail work if you have both leads in the pattern (it's up to the judge.) I think at regionals, Classics, and the International we need to have both patterns and finalist rail work, though. I don't even remember what I typed about this before but I think the rule book is probably already what I was suggesting...
-------
Well, this year the International was a bigger show (I think one of our biggest Internationals ever with 460 ponies) and there weren't really any problems with the show running late. I think the latest day last year was Wednesday, because they did reining in the main arena (In STL they did reining at the same time as girls Horsemanship- which was the reason they didn't do them at the same time last year) so Wednesday was much earlier this year. One day we were even done with the daytime classes at 4:00.
Hey everyone... sorry I haven't been on in awhile-- our internet has
been down. I was looking over some of the most recent messages and
since there hasn't been much discussion, I thought I'd comment on the
main issues that Shane has brought up.
The Team Contest sounds like a lot of fun and it sounds like a really
good idea! Is that what they used to have at the World Show or
something?
Equitation classes: Do you mean rail-work only for like state,
regional/classic shows? Because I thought that was how International
was but I could be wrong. It might not be neccesary at state level
(because Ohio shows are small enough that it wouldn't save a lot of
time) but I think that at the Classics and Regionals it would be
nice. I think they only had rail-work for the finalists at the
Eastern Classic-- at least in some classes. But at bigger shows it
would probabley save some time.
Adding days to International: I was wondering when we'd have to
lengthen the International because I've heard that it went pretty
late in 2005 (haven't heard anything about this year) and if POA is
growing then I'm guessing it will eventually be neccesary. I don't
really want it to, since you're already away from home for so long
though.
Well I guess that's about it.... talk to everyone later! *Heidi*

We had a very successful meeting at the International this year.
If you weren't there or you want a review of the meeting, you can find the notes from the meeting at http://www.geocities.com/poacyouth/2006in.html, and you will be able to read the notes in an upcoming POA Magazine.
What do you all think about the ideas that were discussed at the meeting? Do you have anything to add? I want to submit the 8&U W/T Pleasure and Team Contest Proposals this October, so if you have anything to add or suggest about those two proposals we need to do it now.
Congrats on all of your awards! I wish that we could have gone this year. But, since my dad opened up the store. Im stuck here in hot and miserable Florida!
Had a great time at the SE regional. My mom and grandma were unable to go, so my pony Nick and I hitched a ride with the Schoppas. I lived in the Dykstra's nice bus, enjoying healthy meals and satellite TV every night. Since I was unable to show Nick (he was sore), I shared the pony that I rode last year, Avitars Peppy Perfection, with Ashton Boettcher. So it turned out that the only thing I used that was actually mine all weekend was the tack and show clothes. I was a real bum.
The regional was fun though, saw lots of friends and scored some sweet Brooks and Dunn prizes. I won Hi-pt boys equitation (only 13-18 boy who competed in equitation classes), so I got a little cooler/radio.
The Oklahoma kids did really well at the show- Both 8&U high points were Okies (Alaina Mckenzie and Allison Bizone), Parris Schoppa won the High Point Multiple Pony with Tippy and Jaxon as well as Hi Point Equitation 13-18 Girls, and I got Res 13-18 boy and Hi pt Eq 13-18 boy (again, just cuz I was the only boy!).

Sometimes the Club News in the Magazine is designated as one person's job for the whole year. Sometimes that's great- some of the newswriters are really good at collecting all of the news and reporting it every single month. But a lot of the time it's hard for one person to find news every single month to write about.
This year in Oklahoma, our president Doug Schoppa had the great idea to make a signup sheet to pass around at our banquet- there we filled it out for both adult and youth news, so that a different person would do it every month- he calls the people when it's their turn to remind them to turn it in by the fifteenth two months ahead of time.
It works really well because not only do you meet a new person every month when you read the Oklahoma news, you get a new perspective on the people and events in the state.

Proposal for Team competition at the International
Purpose: To have youth teams from various states compete for the number one team in the nation position
Process: Each state youth club will enter a team from each state (the possibility of more than one team from a state can be addressed later). The Team will consist of 2 youth from each age division (13- 18, 9-12, and 8 and under). They may be either boys or girls. They will compete in their respective divisions at the international as usual, and their class placing (the event they are nominated for) will be added up to give a team total. The team with the highest total will win the competition. The teams could be placed to 3 or 4 placing.
The divisions will consist of Showmanship, Western Equitation, English Equitation, and Huntseat Equitation over Fences, Reining, and one of any Game Class (to be determined by the state club).
Each member of the team will be chosen for a specific division, and may have an alternate in case of illness or other issues that may cause the team member not to show.
Each team member is not allowed to participate in their division consecutive years. (For example if Suzie rode in the western equitation division in 2005, then she would be unable to be nominated for the western equitation division for 2006. However she could participate in any of the other 5 divisions in 2006.
The Fee for the team entry would be paid for by the state. Awards will be purchased with the entry fee money.
The Youth Team members must be members in the respective states they are competing with.
The benefits are many: 1) Gives the youth another competitive outlet 2) Does not add any classes to the already long International Schedule 3) Promotes a team atmosphere 4) Allows more chances for more kids to win awards 5) Allows the opportunity for more sponsorship monies

Nikki, don't worry about getting there if you aren't planning on going anyway... Definitely don't spend a lot of money on a plane ticket or anything! It's no big deal. I can give you all of the information.
I can't really predict how many people will attend the meeting or whether it will be a very productive one (it's always different).
But really don't go out of the way to get to STL for the meeting.
My mom is trying to figure out how to get me out there this year since I am secretary - we both feel I should be there. Do you really think there is going to be time for a REAL meeting Saturday night? I am worried that my mom is going to spend a lot of money getting me there and there will be no meeting.

Hi Shane, Dean visited the facility a week or so ago, and thinks it is very nice, lots of room for practice, felt the area is very safe for kids, with no heavy car/truck traffic. Parking and camper hookups are close, plenty of wash racks, etc. was impressed with the size of the outside arena, which can be split into several smaller working areas, has an eating place there, fast food type, not far from hotels and shopping areas, and sort of similar to Gordyville. Does this help? Jan
I wonder if the show last year was held in one of the smaller arenas, and they didn't waste the money for the main arena for a local show? That could explain why I heard it was a small arena.
Shane,
The Reichert Celebration and I think the NSBA Breeders Championship
used to be held there so it must be some facility if large events like
those where recently there. From the pictures I've seen, the main
arena is huge. Three of the barns are attached to the main arena.
Here is the website for the facility -
http://www.thenationalequestriancenter.com/
I've never been there, but I heard it's pretty nice.
Congratulations on your SE Regional accomplishments!

Did you know that there are POA clubs in other countries?
The Australian Palouse Pony organization is the most successful of
the foreign clubs, and there has even been an exchange program with
that club and our POA club. My uncle Tom and several other POA kids
travelled to Australia and competed using Palouses, and a group of
Aussies came over and competed at the International using American
POAs. The website for it is http://www.palousepony.org.au
POAC-Germany just held its annual meeting, and there are pictures and
an article about it in the June 2006 POA Magazine. POACG seems to be
growing rather quickly and they are planning to advertise the POA
breed at a few upcoming European Horse Fairs.
Finally, a Swedish chapter of the POAC submitted bylaws to the POAC
Board of Directors at this year's convention. They submitted both
Swedish and English versions, of course! The Swedish club has very
few members and ponies, but they're brand new.
Thought it was interesting...

Where have all the messages gone?
On the front page of YouthPOA group, there is a table that shows
monthly message history throughout the existence of the group. Our
highest monthly message count was one and a half years ago, with 151
messages in January of 2005. We have had four months with 100 or more
posts, and three months in a row with over 100 posts (that's only about
3 posts a day). But we haven't had a single month with more than 20
posts in an entire year.
This message is being sent to all 90 members of YouthPOA. Encourage
your POA friends who haven't heard of YouthPOA and yourselves to come
and talk about the exciting Youth Advisory Board, the unique POA breed,
maybe even how your state's last show went. Let's make this a fun,
active place again.

showing locally. Unfortunately, this means i have to miss another meeting
