Look folks, this team is good - darn good. It's championship caliber
and we all know it. Memphis is as Memphis does, they suck live
Hoover. There is no reason, no Josh Howard or not, that we should
squeak by with a one point victory. I am pleased about the win, but
what happened should have been more like last night's game rather
than what happened tonight.

Am I wrong to feel this way??

I don't know, if it's the fact we need Howard more than I realize,
than I can deal with that. Howard is our virtual Scottie Pippen to
Dirk's Jordan but what is killing me also is the sudden deterioration
of George who has started the last few games. Yes, he scored 0 and
so did Croshere LOL! Oh well, we won. It's better than losing to
the Grizzled ones...

Am I wrong???

I am not sure...

Reggie Miller's word means about as much as Barkley's or Walton's in
my opinion. Cro had a good game, let's see if he can string a few
together or at least find a semblance of a consistent game. Tonight
at halftime he's 0-3 including 0-1 on 3pt shots and has two
rebounds. But, in his defense the Mavs are shooting horribly and
Junior Harris, Devean George, Buckner, and Diop also has diddley at
halftime. We'll see what happens in the second half. Memphis is a
team we should put away like we did the Sonics last night.

By the way if Reggie is watching - gotta love Damp tonight so far.
He's shooting 5-6 from the field and 1-1 from the stripe along with 6
rebounds and only one TO. That's just at halftime too LOL!

Second half has a lot of storylines. Let's see what plays out...

It was just great fun to see the guy have a great night.  Every bench player deserves that from time to time.
I think it was good for the entire team and Avery, too!

Go Mavs!

Where has he been the rest of the season?? Uh, he's
been on the bench, sitting, with his warm-ups on...
IMHO, that wasn't a "fluke" game as much as it was
shades of what Croshere can really do. Is he good for
34 a night? Hell no. Is Devin Harris good for 34 a
night? Hell no. WE have three (maybe three and a
half) players that could be. I'm right there with you
on the consistency thing. Here's hoping that this
will break him out of his funk and allow him to be a
little confident when he gets on the floor. He knows
he can contribute 6-8 points a game and be a decent
deep threat, and hopefully now he'll start to be.
I don't know about you guys, but I think it speaks
volumes for the team when they rally behind someone
who has been, well... uh,.... CRAP for pretty much
the entire season. Instead of treating him like a
red-headed stepchild, they ALL jumped on the Croshere
bandwagon last night. It really demonstrated what
this team is really made of.
Good job, Cro... I'm not quite ready to go buy your
jersey yet.... but good job......

I've never seen Dirk make 7 3pointers... I think y'all were too quick to
judge Croshere! He's a decent back up really...

WHAT?!?!  After one game you are going to jump on the Croshere band wagon?  All that game did was make me scratch my head and say where has he been the rest of the season.  i dont care what he does in one game(yes it was impressive and a career night)  BUT IT IS JUST ONE GAME!!!  I want the same thing out of him that i want out of Damp CONSISTENCY!  if he can show me something tonight like last night or if he takes advantage of the limited minutes he does get for the next few weeks i may change my mind on him but as of right now it was a fluke good game.

I have to agree with Chuck on this one.   They just didn't seem to have any spark at all last night.
Avery will use this to make them even better.

The loss is not a bad thing at all, in my opinion.  May actually be helpful
in the long run, as they need to learn how to win on those nights when no
one can hit a jump shot.  Keeps them from thinking they can win just by
showing up.

I know, I know... I haven't been speaking much of anywhere of late... MAN, I would love to see them play. I haven't been to a game this year. MAVS WITH THE NUMBER ONE SEED IN THE WEST, BABY!!! REALISTICALLY, though, 65+ wins. I'm thinking somewhere around 68, with the way they are playing right now. And when they hit the playoffs, maybe one (two tops) in the loss column all the way through.
BRING IT ON!!!

Suns and Spurs - NOPE.

That's all Howard needs tonight to average 20 pts per game for the
first time in his NBA Career. Now, how many teams are kicking
themselves??

As they say on those Guiness commercials, "Brilliant!"

I am starting to wonder what has happened to all of you. I am feeling
slighted here (Sob, sob...) No one is posting and all the Mavs are
doing is winning and shooting and winning and rebounding and winning
and so on...

I want to hear how much you love this team and what you would be
willing to do (please only things legal) to see them play or whatever...

I would love to hear from all of you here in the group. It's getting
so quiet in here LOL!

Sometimes it's not a small world after all

08:39 PM CST on Wednesday, January 24, 2007

Here's a tipoff that the Mavericks' season is going along much more smoothly than last year: they got out of Orlando, Fla., with a win and without any tirades.

Last year, Avery Johnson went nuclear in the postgame locker room at Orlando's oft-renamed arena as the Mavericks had lost the last three of a four-game Eastern road trip. It was the kind of moment that they needed.

This time, they got out of Orlando by increasing their winning streak to eight games and showing their versatility as a team that can start four players 6-7 or taller and be successful. That knowledge will come in quite handy when they run into Kobe Bryant or Tracy McGrady in the playoffs in April.

"We have had games against Kobe and McGrady and a lot of those big two guards and we're just too small," Avery Johnson says. "There are some games that our two points guards, we can't really get away with playing those two guys. It just gives us some extra versatility. But, Devin Harris is still our guy."

And Harris knows that. He will continue to be the point guard of the present and the future.

It's just that this team has so many options that it can afford to experiment in January so that it doesn't have to in the playoffs.

MAVERICKS Q&A

Q: First, thanks for your great work covering the Mavs. I know it's fun for you to cover such a class organization and such a great team. I have a question about Jason Terry. It seems teams recently have been overplaying Terry a lot, keeping him from going to his right and squaring up to shoot. I don't think I've ever seen him go left and square up for a shot successfully. Is this a potential liability and is Terry working to improve in that area?

Jim H.

SEFKO: Excellent question, which is why I'm answering it, because D-Moore has trouble with the actual nuts and bolts of basketball (and with writing, too). As fun as it is covering the Mavs, it's hard to soar with eagles when you work with turkeys. But I digress.

I think Terry's recent upswing in assists might have something to do with the way teams are overplaying him now. He's still not a great passer. But he can find guys when they are open. You're right about his inability to shoot when going left. But I can assure you that both he and Avery Johnson understand this shortcoming and are working on it.

Teams know they can push him that way and he'll be less dangerous offensively. But he's still able to find open teammates and has been doing that well when opponents concentrate on taking away the shot.

Terry must prove he can help this team in other ways besides the 3-ball and pull-up jumpers. It's a work in progress.

Q: Why not send DeSagana Diop to the NBA Developmental League for a short time? The center position is not Avery's area of expertise. Is there a coach at the D-League who could help Diop?

Kent

SEFKO: I'm sure there's somebody down there who could help him, but it's not an option. Players with more than two years NBA experience cannot be farmed out to the D-league. They would have to cut him. That's why Pops Mensah-Bonsu, Moe Ager and J.J. Barea all have spent time in Fort Worth. They can be sent there and still be property of the Mavs.

By the way, Del Harris and Popeye Jones do a lot of the work with the centers and they're getting about as much as can be had from Diop and Erick Dampier.

Q: In response to Mark Cuban wearing a T-shirt that read, "I went to the San Antonio River Walk and all I got was a rash," he should behave himself.

Pat P.

SEFKO: Haven't you been watching and listening? He's been behaving himself better than ever this season, at least in terms of what he is saying. But I'll admit he should have known that the San Antonio River gets a good cleaning every year in January and it had nothing to do with his contributions to the cause, although he has made one.

My suggestion is just to enjoy Cuban's antics for their comedic value. He can be a pretty clever person on occasion.

Q: Why does Dirk leave the floor and head out the tunnel before introductions every game? I personally think it's because Billy Hayes' voice is so too annoying to take, but I'm open to other suggestions. And, why is he handed the ball after every tipoff only to hand it back to Devin Harris?

Dennis and Todd

SEFKO: A good question, and an old one – although not in that order – so we combined them.

Nowitzki has been going to empty his bladder before pregame introductions for several seasons now. On road games, usually he'll wait until after the Mavs are introduced, then go to the nearest restroom. He normally doesn't even see the other team get introduced.

At home, I like Todd's reasoning that people will do anything to avoid hearing the Mavericks' public-address announcer. But every NBA team has a screaming P.A. guy these days. I guess that's the league's idea of entertainment.

As for the ball, that's a good question. He's one of those players who likes to feel the ball in play as soon as possible, just to know how old the thing is. The leather balls can have a little bit different feel from ball to ball.

Most players get a chance to rub up the ball before the jump ball if they so desire.

Q: I watch the Mavs mostly on the Internet as they are rarely shown in our area. In the game against Indiana recently, I thought there were way too many fouls on Dallas. Were they actually committing that many fouls or are the Pacers good actors?

Eileen, Michigan

SEFKO: Probably a little of both. The Mavericks weren't happy with the officiating after that game. But they bit their tongues.

And the Pacers are a physical team. They know how to initiate contact and when you are the aggressor, often times you will get rewarded with the ref's whistle.

Q: I agree Erick Dampier doesn't put up numbers like Yao or Shaq (when he actually plays), but it seems that Dampier is more of a traditional center and plays in ways that are not flashy, but get the job done.

Betty C.

Q: Is it just me, or has Erick Dampier regressed over the last few weeks?

Chris B.

SEFKO: This is what we get here at Mavs newsletter central every week. Half the people think Dampier is a plus. Half think he should be traded for a crate of synthetic basketballs and a D-Moore blow-up doll.

So we answer them in tandem.

No matter what you think about Dampier, he's the Mavericks' center for better or worse. And when you've won a zillion or so games already this season, it's better more than it's worse. No team is perfect. In San Antonio, they wish they had a small forward. In Phoenix, they wish they had a ... well, I'm sure they wish they had something. Maybe a bench player who could contribute.

Anyway, if Erick Dampier is your fifth-, sixth- or seventh-best player, you're a pretty darn good team. It's when he's your second- or third-best player that you know you have problems.

And both he and DeSagana Diop are using their fouls more wisely this season. They each get six of them. And both players aren't afraid to use them, even if it's early in the game to send a message to opponents.

• • •

Q: What's the deal with Jerry Stackhouse? It seems like he's always hurt. Should the Mavs look for somebody who can get through a week of games without a sprain?

Rudy

SEFKO: Stackhouse is being saved for the playoffs. His body has as much mileage on it as anybody on the team. And they are doing just fine with him playing between 20 and 24 minutes per game.

His toughness is every bit as important to this team as his scoring.

It's no crime if he misses 10 or 20 or even 30 games in the regular season. The Mavericks need him in the playoffs.

• • •

Q: I'm an old man, so bear with me. The Mavericks have the best record in the league, so what is the matter? I don't see any reason to trade, move or cut anybody. I get the impression some fans (and maybe you, too) wouldn't stop to help a fallen Pam Anderson because she had a run in her stockings.

L. Ward

SEFKO: First of all, Pam Anderson is more D-Moore's type. You know, big hair, big pain in the neck, big everything. He's into that gaudy stuff.

I'm more of a Denise Richards guy myself.

But your point is well-taken. This team is terrific. Don't mess with it. Everybody else is trying to chase the Mavericks. Don't give them any help by messing with the chemistry of this team.

Now if Dale Davis comes available for, say, Anthony Johnson, that may be another subject to address.
