What is the difference between a y-foil 66 and a y-foil 77. Thank you.

The cost of raam is very high. John budgeted something like 4 grand
just for fuel, and I'm sure he was in the 10k range, with hotels, air
flight, etc for the crew. An 8 person team multiplies that. John was
using 2 minivans and a crew of 5. You can probably figure 15-20K to do
the race with an 8 man team, as you'll want an RV, and probably 2
pace/leapfrog vehicles. The good thing is as an 8 man, the team can
also be the crew when they're off bike.

Sometimes lots of it. The larger your team, the greater your cost for
enrollment, a multi-vehicle support team, gasoline or diesel fuel (next year,
we'd be looking to supply ethanol and biodiesel for all support vehicles
coast-to-coast, courtesy of ACORE, I hope).

Yup, UCI kills innovation. They started that in 1934, with Francis
Faure. We're lucky they allowed multiple gears, or we'd all be riding
fixies. The Y-foil along with a ton of other advanced designs have been
"nixed" by the UCI in the name of safety or an unfair advantage. Other
than local stuff, you're pretty much screwed at the national level.
UMCA is one of the few venues you can see an upright diamond frame, a
Y-Foil and a recumbent all at the same starting line with the same goal.
I did notice the Y-foil this year. I was following John Schlitter on
his Bacchetta recumbent, he's one of the founders of the company and
nothing promotes your product more than racing it in something like
RAAM. Oh, other than the UMCA, you can race a Y-Foil at the
international level in IHPVA events. :)

Bob
would it be too much to ask if you can come visit Trek San Diego's
south county store in chula vista that weekend also? that happens to
be the store i work at. in fact, i was getting set on presenting a
proposal to the store owner (Mike Olson), on helping out the team
(possible sponsorship?)
i would love to get a gang of us to ride the coast, but i work
weekends for trek. thanks for the invite though. a ride on the
strand around coronado sounds cool also as long as its a really early
ride so that i can make it to work on time.

Wakko,

Great work, already.

I'm in San Diego, CA this week (until 3JULY08) and plan to drop into the
TREK Super Bike store Kearny Mesa, Saturday to discuss the prospect of
RAAM if you are working. Or, better yet a ride on Y-Foils Sunday. I
plan a 60 - 70 miler up and down the coast. Let me know if you can make
it. I'll be riding Saturday morning in Coronado.

Yeah I believe your correct. I think he placed 3rd the year before, then won it.

Actually, I believe RAAM individual was won by a guy on a gold Foil a

okay guys.
i contacted Larry Black, owner of Mt Airy Bicycles about the
possibility of either a 4- or 8-person mixed team to race next year's
RAAM. he's in. along with one other racer.
i'm in. i've got one backer so far, and am going to chase one other.
i've chosen "SPORTS for Exceptional Athletes" (s4ea.com) as my
organization to race for.
anyone else up for racing across america?

Since he is running with an 8 speed stack all he has to do is change out the
cassette and shifters. The deraileur will work with the 9 speed stack, he may
have to change out the pulleys on the deraileur for the 9 speed chain.

Group,
Hey I have a question for you. My father in law is in the process of
changing over a tri bike to a road bike(a soft ride) The bike is
currently set up as a 8spd, with shimano 600 rear derailleur. He is
getting ready to change over to STI shifting and has 9 spd ultegra
shifters. Is this possible? Calling on all you experts. Thanks, Gene

I'd like that very much, and I will connect with Bob. If you'd want to check out
ride photos, webcam videos of this year's event, see www.raceacrossameri ca.org.
Strangely, it's hard to find out much about it anyplace else.

Ironically, I rode out past where Bob lives on the fabulous W&OD trail yesterday
for a good 30-miler and may do so again today. We'll connect and start a
dialogue on this & keep you all posted.

As for RAAM, the devil's in the details and the details involve M-O-N-E-Y!

One RAAM staff guy told me that a team from Sweden who did RAAM this year spent
north of $40K to participate!

A domestic team would not need that much, but there will be costs, and that
means we'd need sponsors.

How about it, Y-Foilers? Any ideas about potential sponsors? Don't suggest bike
manufacturers who I was told (off the record by RAAM folks) are a bunch of
cheapskates. Maybe you've heard.

Anyway, let's discuss.

James,

Strange we haven't met; or have we and I just forgot. I have 5 Y-foils
and ride them out of Vienna, VA regularly. I am quite familiar with
RAAM including many of the champions in the event and would be
interested in discussing an 8-person RAAM on Y-Foils with you, or just
riding out the W & OD... In fact, I am going to race one of my Y-Foils
in tomorrow's Virginia State Senior TT championship in Stony Creek. The
bike is illegal, of course, for any UCI sanctioned event, but not for
local or state USA Cycling events --- other than National Championships
--- where, for the first year,( ever, the Y-Foil is illegal.

Hope to see you on the trail.

Hey group,
I got a fork from our good friend Heinz after he replaced his fork
with a fancy Easton fork. I had hoped to use it for a project
forgetting that it's threaded. I'm guessing it would work for a 59cm,
may-be a 56cm. It's paint is rough but still a very usable fork. If
you're in need get back to me . Thanks, Gene

Nothing to building it up. I built my gold Foil up from a new/never
built frame back in 2002. Still going strong. Installing the BB is a
bit tricky, it's easy to cross the threads. You do need the long nuts
in order to fit the brakes. The Foil frame should come with a set, or
if they're missing (as they were with mine), SRP makes a set in titanium.

Otherwise, the toughest part is deciding how to equip it. I'm a
traditionalist, went with a Chorus 10 group, and it has held up very
well. Upgraded a few pieces over the years, but the Foil I have today
is still pretty much the bike I put together in the fall of 2002.

I still remember that first ride. Crankset was creaking, chain was
clacking from misadjustment, brakes were iffy, but when I hit that
first downhill, the Foil took off like a rocket. Once everything was
adjusted and retightened, it became a very trouble free ride. Six
years later, it's still going strong, and I just don't feel motivated
to replace it.

I don't know how familiar you folks are with this event
(www.raceacrossamerica.org), which concludes today in Annapolis, MD, but it is
most impressive, indeed.

It was my honor to represent the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE),
of which I am a member and they are a sponsor of RAAM this year, at a closing
reception last evening. Frankly, it is one of the toughest athletic events
around that no one seems to have heard anything about.

That's likely to change. One way that will happen is for cyclcist like us to
learn more about it, talk it up, and participate which I plan to do next year.

I had my Y-Foil 66 with me last night which caught the attention of a number
of the riders and support team, a bit to my embarrassment since they had just
spent 8 - 9 days crossing the country and were pretty road weary. In addition I
met a guy whose name I did not get who owns what has been described as the most
unique bike shop in the U.S., in Mt. Airy, MD (http://www.bike123.com).

Turns out, he's a huge Y fan and has a number of Y frames and finished bikes
at his shop, one of which is on display as if in a museum.

Long story short, he's very interested in putting together a 4- or 8-person
team of Y-Foilers to do the race next year, from someplace in California to
Annapolis, MD. I like the idea, too -- how about you?

It looks like quite a commitment of time and money, but if you like
challenges, this looks like it would be lots of fun.

Dave,
I'm betting you bought it off ebay huh? I suggest you email scienceman6000 he
built up a brand new gold y foil last year. He probably will be real helpful.
Congrats on your new frame. Gene

$1K per frame does seem incredibly high for those frames.
considering built-up bikes are going for the same. i was hoping on
hearing around $500/frame myself. i was actually counting the change
in my dresser to see if i had that kinda cash on hand.

Hi All-
These are Shimano hub Clinchers - 700c
I suspect they have about 1500 or so miles on them, they were my race
wheels back around 98-2000.
