Subject: Y-Foil and Drive Train Cleaning

Hey all,

I put 100 miles in a week on my Y-Foil and noticed that the drive
train attracts dirt and grim extremely quickly. My cassette, chain,
and the inside of the chain rings are all covered in dirt!

I have two brothers that usually tag alongside and ride the same
distance and trail (Kestrel RT700 and Windsor TT, the "trail" is
paved) and their drive trains are spotless. My hypothesis is that due
to the lack of a seat tube, road dirt and grime gets flung out to the
inside of the chain rings and chain. The chain brings the dirt all
over the cassette whenever I pedal. This really seems to be the case
and is to me a major con of the Y-Foil design. Does anyone notice
that the Y-Foil requires (more) cleaning than other bikes?

Gene
i plan on hooking up a 55t or 56t for the duathlon i'm doing in
july. more than likely it will be a temp thing just for flat races.
the ride i did yesterday was a 40 miler from pacific beach to
leucadia and back. it should have taken 2.5 hours if we were
trucking with no stops, but with the uphills and and stop sign and
stop lights and all...plus the 1 hour coffee break at the pannikin in
leucadia, it took us too long. haha! the average speed was mostly
taken on the flats. and if you're pretty strong or even averagely
strong on the hills, then you have me cooked.

My brother in law has a 55 or 56tooth on his bike? And seriously you
avg 25mph? If so my friend if I ever ride with you either you'll
leave me in the dust or wait for me. How many miles did you ride with
this 25mph avg? Gene

SERIOUSLY.
next thing you know, someone will sneak in the $15 million bank
account from nigeria email.
so i took out my refurbished time trial/tri machine for a cruise
yesterday. it was to be the first big test that i put on her since
the rebuild. let me tell you, 20mph into the cross/headwinds that
was coming off the coast at around 15degrees from my left. on the
return trip, i was conserving my legs for a farely short but steep
climb along the PCH, so i had my Y on the biggest gears i had (53/11)
and paced myself on a pretty slow cadence count...i averaged 25mph
anyways. my friend was spinning like mad on his 3lb lighter madone
just to keep within sight of me!
first real test will be july 27th when i race a duathlon at solana
beach. gonna see about renting some zipps for that one.

I have seen some tri bikes built with a 650 front wheel and a 700 in the rear.
Same with some women specific frames. The logic as I understand it is to tighten
up the geometry - shorter wheel base and/or shorter top tube (steeper seat tube
= think tri) and shorten the reach (for smaller riders/women with shorter
torso's)

don't know anyone riding a 650 wheel and I am an active trialthlete / rider.

Hi group,
I have a friend thats wanting to buy a softride that has 650c wheels.
Does anyone have the pros and cons to using a smaller wheel? I know he
should be wanting a Y Foil! Please let me know if this wouldn't be a
good move for long distance riding ? Thanks, Gene

650 wheels are lighter and stiffer, hence their popularity with triathletes
(they tend to be big chain pushers instead of cyclist. However, the trade off is
with road resistance and availablity of brands. obiviously, there is a reason
why the pros use 700 instead of 650. If 650 were that great, why is it that
trime trialists use 700 instead?

I just did 48 with a group I just joined and they are monsters. If anyone passes
them its on I got there late and rode with the second group we averaged 23 to
catch the first group. One of the riders fell so they cut the route from 80. I
hit the wall on the way back and had to drag myself back to the car.

I'm riding again with them tomorrow another 50 or so I have to get in shape if
I'm gonna hang with there guys. I hope to meet and ride with you some day.
