I heard back from Trek on warranty replacement of my cracked frame
(I am the original owner, and have my original receipt from one of
the nation's top Trek dealers). The frame will be replaced with a
stock 5500 (or 5200) at no cost, a stock 5900 ultralight for ~$240
and a stock Madone 5.9 for ~$580. ProjectOne custom paint is at
website price with no additional discount.
As far as price, the best deal is on the 5900, but I've decided upon
the Madone.
From the website, a ProjectOne Madone frame to my paint preferences
is $3250. My warranty cost is $580 for the frame and $450 (full
price) for the custom paint job. I spec'd out an entire bike at
$5450. Trek has offered the complete bike at $2800. I planned to
go with DuraAce anyway, and the component group would cost me at
least $1150 on top of the $1030 for a custom frame. I was going to
purchase a slightly lighter stem and seatpost than offered on
ProjectOne, plus a set of Nimble Fly wheels. I planned on spending
about $2650 plus the wheelset ($800 + tax, as Nimble is local to
me), so I'll take the package deal (w/Bontrager wheels) for $2800.
Unfortunately, the bike will not be here for two months. I was
somewhat resigned to my mountain bike until then, but opened the
local cycling paper to check on an inexpensive used road bike for
the next couple of months. No bike ads interested me, but I saw an
ad placed by a blind cyclist seeking a captain for his tandem. I
called him, and plan to ride with him.
