WE'VE FOUND OUR LEVEL, SAYS SKIVERTON

08:00 - 01 March 2008

Terry Skiverton believes Yeovil Town have found their true level in
League One - but insists they need to work twice as hard as the other
teams to ensure they stay there.

The central defender will lead the Glovers out at Priestfield Stadium
today for a vital clash with fellow strugglers Gillingham.

Skiverton, who scored Yeovil's last goal, two games ago, will marshal
the visitors' defence in his usual vocal style. His approach commands
respect and he talks sense off the pitch, too.

There were a few boos when Yeovil were beaten 3-0 at home by Southend
last Saturday, slumping to 16th place in League One, just six points
above the relegation zone, in the process.

But Skiverton said: "The fans are still behind us. There were one or two
who vented their frustration, but they are entitled to do so. When you
come and pay to watch football you want to be entertained.

"The fans haven't seen us have this sort of run for a number of years,
so really they have been a little bit spoilt after all the recent
success we have had.

"It is the same with the Wycombe Wanderers team Martin O'Neill had (for
which Skiverton played). Sometimes you do reach your level and our level
is League One.

"We have got to dig in now and get ourselves some good results to climb
the table.

"I feel we have turned into a really good League One team now and we
want to keep it that way.

"Then we can get into the summer and regroup and see where we go from
there."

Sometimes it is all too easy to forget Yeovil were a non-League outfit
as recently as 2003.

"We are a small club competing with these people and we have got to work
twice as hard as the rest," said Skiverton.

"We have been trying a bit too hard lately and our quality has been
suffering.

"We need to get a combination of the two. The hard work and
determination but also the cool heads when the chances come.

"It is good to go through something like this because it tests your
character and mental toughness - and I feel as a squad it makes you come
closer together.

"We are still in a decent position. There are a lot of teams worse off
than us."

Gillingham are one such side. They changed their manager in November,
bringing in Mark Stimson from Stevenage Borough.

Since then Stimson has returned to non-League, taking four players from
his former club and two from Grays, another of his old sides.

That suggests Yeovil face a physical battle.

Indeed Huddersfield boss Andy Ritchie left Priestfield last week
complaining that goalscorer Adam Miller had not been sent off for a
two-footed challenge. Ritchie claimed his defender, Nathan Clarke, had
stud marks on his chest.

Skiverton has seen it all before, of course. "I am one of those players
from non-League myself," he said.

"I know they will be hungry and ready to fight. They are desperate to
keep their club in this division.

"They have got plenty of energy in the team, so we know it will be tough.

"We are determined to bounce back from the Southend game.

"We have gone through a really bad spell - we know that. But the manager
(Russell Slade) has been upbeat and has made sure we have put 110 per
cent into our training. If you do that then the games come a bit easier
for you.

"We have got the psychological edge over Gillingham by beating them in
the first game at home."

That 2-1 win, which was shown live on Sky Sports, saw James Walker net a
dramatic last-minute winner.

It was a first victory in seven games and Skiverton admitted: "We want
more of the same.

"It was a really wet day and we had gone on a bit of a run without a win.

"This time it is on their patch, though, and they will be solid and strong.

"We have been working hard on how they are going to play - the manager
told us what to expect.

"Both teams will be edgy and it will be about who really does want that
first goal the most.

"We have got to keep ourselves away from the teams at the bottom and
this game is a good chance to do that." If Yeovil are to emerge with the
points then Skiverton will probably have to come out on top in a battle
with former Bolton striker Delroy Facey. The burly frontman is set for a
recall after a lively display as a substitute in the 1-0 win against
Huddersfield at the weekend.

"He is a big striker who has been coming on as sub," said Skiverton.
"You don't go in scared of anyone. It isn't about keeping him quiet it
is about playing well yourself."

Yeovil's form has not been helped by a rash of injuries. But Skiverton
is not one for excuses.

"It is difficult but all the other teams have had the same thing," he
said. "If you get a settled team playing well you will get results, but
the manager has had to try different formations and personnel because we
haven't really had the same team to pick from week to week."

Zoltan likely to be unavailable for Yeovil Town
By Steve Sowden

YEOVIL Town's Hungarian winger Zoltan Stieber is unlikely to be fit to
face Gillingham tomorrow in the Coca-Cola League One.

Stieber missed last weekend's 3-0 defeat at home to Southend United
after suffering a thigh injury in training.

And Glovers' physio Jim Joyce has said it is unlikely that Stieber will
have recovered in time to face Gillingham tomorrow at Priestfield.

Late fitness test for Yeovil Town's Rose
By Steve Sowden

UTILITY player Matty Rose faces a late fitness test ahead of Yeovil
Town's massively-important Coca-Cola League One game at Gillingham tomorrow.

Rose limped out of last weekend's 3-0 defeat at home to Southend United
after jarring his right ankle in a tackle.

Now the Glovers' physio Jim Joyce has said that Rose will have a late
fitness test to see if he has recovered enough to take part in
tomorrow's Gillingham contest.

YEOVIL TO BANISH RELEGATION FEARS
DAVID WILCOCK AT HUISH PARK

11:00 - 01 March 2008

Yeovil Town manager Russell Slade wants points and he wants them now. A
miserable start to 2008 has seen the Glovers drop perilously close to
the relegation zone and the next four matches, all against teams
fighting for survival, are likely to define their season.

Today, the Somerset side play the first of those as they travel to
Gillingham. Cheltenham Town and Millwall then come to Huish Park before
the Glovers travel to Bournemouth, another side staring relegation in
the face. Slade, however, is taking it one game at a time and all his
attention is on today's long trip to Kent.

"All we are talking about is Gillingham, we are not talking about the
next four games," the Glovers boss said. "I think they are all
important, we have 12 games left and let's hope that the games towards
the end of the season are not as important as they need to be.

"Our target now is to get back to back wins and that will only start if
we win a football match on Saturday.

"We need to remain positive. More than ever before this season to be
honest. We are trying to build the players up and prepare in a
professional manner because we know we have got important games ahead of us.

"It is important that we quickly put the last game behind us and build
on what we have done in training so far this week."

The Glovers boss has set his side the target of gaining back-to-back
victories, something which will ease some of the tension surrounding
Huish Park right now. It is also something Yeovil have not managed since
defeating Hartlepool and Doncaster in successive weeks at the beginning
of December.

"We are not going out to try and draw a football match, we are going out
to win a football match, but it is important that we don't lose any more
ground or they don't gain any ground on us," Slade added.

"I think it's as simple as this really: if we can put two back to back
wins together then that would take an enormous amount of pressure off us
right now and perhaps everybody would lose a little bit of anxiety which
is creeping into the terraces and also creeping into the changing room,
inevitably. The only thing to put that right is to get some points and
win some football matches.

"Anybody that is in that bottom ten will have a spell which they are not
happy with. Gillingham are at home again and that is important from
their point of view, they got a result and they have something to build
on, which is something we are looking to achieve. If we can get that on
Saturday, then that will set us up for the next game."

Slade's options are again hindered by a lengthy injury list, but he is
hopeful that one or two players will pull through and make themselves
available for today's clash.

"We had as many as 13 players unavailable for training on Tuesday, but
we had a good result in the reserves [a 1-0 win over Plymouth Argyle]
which we were pleased with and one or two made a good impression," he
said. "But having said that, we will have to see who is available
because there are still one or two that haven't trained this week like
Matty Rose, who has had a further injection in his ankle, [Mark] Lynch
and [Paul] Warne have been out with a virus, but they trained today.
Scotty Guyett trained today, so there are a lot of probables at this
moment, but that is nothing new for me."

To be fair, problems have beset Slade all season, something he did not
have to contend with so much when the Glovers reached Wembley in the
play-off final last season. "We have played in the region of 35, 36
players this year and it was more in the region of 20-21 last season,"
Slade pointed out.

"The team picked itself an awful lot more than what it has this season,
so it has been difficult. But I'm not making excuses for bad decisions
and injuries, they are the cards we have been dealt and we just have to
come out the other side of the period.

"When things are not going to plan, then things go against you and the
two refereeing decisions [last week] were exceptionally poor and video
evidence would support that. But that has gone now, we have to expect
that things will go against us and we have to roll our sleeves up, be
positive and mentally tough in these forthcoming games."

Gillingham 0 Yeovil Town 0

Stephen Maher was sent off minutes into his League debut as his Yeovil
Town side managed to cling on for a point away to Gillingham.

Brought on in the 74th minute, Maher was sent off only three minutes
later for a strong tackle on Simon King, but the home side were unable
to capitalise.

With Yeovil having suffered two successive 3-0 defeats and Gillingham
hovering just above the relegation zone, it was difficult to say which
side needed a win the most.

The opening exchanges gave a clear indication as to the lack of
confidence in both sides, with some tidy midfield play culminating in a
disappointing final pass or cross.

Yeovil's Jaime Peters went close on 11 minutes when his shot from the
edge of the area deflected off a Gills defender for a corner.

But the home side looked brighter going forward, with Leroy Griffiths'
physical presence causing problems, and three minutes before half-time
Terry Skiverton's sliced clearance from Adam Miller's free-kick almost
had the Gills in front, but missed the far post by a matter of inches.

Shortly after the break, Griffiths' strike partner Delroy Facey found
himself in space and curled a speculative effort from 20 yards just over
Scott Flinders' crossbar.

Ten minutes later, Griffiths narrowly failed to hook the ball over
Flinders from Miller's cross as the Gills continued to threaten.

Despite these chances, it appeared that a breakthrough would come from a
set-piece and once again it was the Miller-Skiverton combination that
almost contrived to give Gillingham the lead, when the centre-half
headed against his own post in the 72nd minute from another Miller
free-kick.

Two minutes later referee Darren Deadman showed no hesitation in
brandishing a red card to substitute Maher for his tackle on King to
leave the visitors hanging on.

But despite a late appeal for a penalty, Gillingham were unable to break
down Yeovil's watertight defence.

MAHER'S NIGHTMARE DEBUT ENDS GOALLESS

17:41 - 01 March 2008

Gillingham 0 Yeovil 0: Stephen Maher was sent off on his league debut as
Yeovil's poor form continued following a goalless draw at Gillingham.

The 19-year-old was red-carded just three minutes after coming on for
Russell Slade's men for a two-footed challenge on Simon King.

But despite their numerical advantage, struggling Gillingham couldn't
find a winner with the post frustrating them in the dying minutes.

Yeovil, who now have just one win in 12 games, could have taken the lead
early on but Liam Bridcutt fired a simple chance over the bar.

But Mark Stimson's side, who are also struggling at the wrong end of the
table, dominated and squandered numerous chances as John Nutter and
Leroy Griffiths fired wide.

Delroy Facey also curled an effort around the post early in the second
half as Yeovil were on the rack.

When Maher was sent for an early bath by referee Darren Deadman was a
wild lunge on King, Gillingham smelt a victory.

But Terry Skiverton's sliced clearance, which struck his own post, was
the closest the Gills came to snatching the three points.

Yeovil Town fans urged to buy Bristol Rovers tickets NOW
By Steve Sowden

YEOVIL Town supporters are being urged to buy their tickets well in
advance of what will be an eagerly-awaited clash with Bristol Rovers
later this season.

The Glovers will entertain West Country rivals Rovers at Huish Park on
Saturday, March 29, in what will be expected to be a sell-out crowd.

The match has been deemed all-ticket which means fans will not be able
to buy any tickets on the day of the game.

The fixture has also been deemed by club bosses as a 'categorised match'
which means that ticket prices will incur an additional £4.

But tickets are available now from the Huish Park ticket office.

The message from the club is simple - buy your tickets now to avoid
missing out on watching the Glovers do battle with the Gasheads!

FLINDERS KEEN TO EXTEND STAY WITH GLOVERS

08:00 - 03 March 2008

Gillingham 0 Yeovil Town 0

Scott Flinders kept a clean sheet against his old club and then revealed
he would like to extend his stay at Yeovil Town.

The on-loan Crystal Palace goalkeeper returned his second shut-out for
the Glovers, handing them a vital point in the battle to secure League
One survival.

Flinders was initially signed for a month to cover for the knee injury
suffered by Steve Mildenhall and he has impressed with some composed
displays in a difficult period for Yeovil.

The youngster has two more games left on his loan - at home to
Cheltenham on Saturday and Millwall on March 11.

Mildenhall was ruled out for at least six weeks after suffering his
injury at Walsall on February 9, so a second month on loan at Huish Park
appears likely for Flinders.

Flinders said: "I would like to stay because I want to play as many
games as possible. I haven't played that many games in the last 18
months, so as many as possible is the best thing for my career.

"I am taking it game by game. I will speak to the manager when it
expires and a lot will depend on how Mildy is."

Cheltenham and Millwall remain below the 16th-placed Glovers in the
League One table and Flinders needs no reminding of the importance of
the clashes as Yeovil are still just six points above the relegation zone.

"The two games coming up are the biggest games since I came here," he
said. "They are winnable but they are going to be hard games."

Flinders had a loan spell at Gillingham last season, so he had an extra
reason to be happy about remaining unbeaten.

"It is always good to go back to your former club and it was a
well-fought draw," he said. "The back lads dug in really well and we are
pleased with a point."

Yeovil deserved credit for playing out the final 12 minutes with 10 men
after substitute Stephen Maher was sent off just four minutes after
coming on.

"When you go down to 10 men you always get that extra bit of adrenaline
rush to push on and try to get a few points," said Flinders.

"All over the park they did so well to hang on to that 0-0 draw. We have
been disappointing over the last couple of games, so it is nice to come
away with a clean sheet.

"It is a bit sad that we haven't got a goal in the last couple of weeks,
but we can work on that in training."

Yeovil manager Russell Slade told his players before they trained on
Thursday that the game would be a scrappy, nervous battle between two
teams threatened by relegation - and he was proved right.

Apart from Maher's red card there were few memorable moments on a day
for artisans rather than artists. A swirling wind did not help matters
and nor, felt Slade, did the pitch.

"Whether not watering it was something that Mark (Stimson, Gillingham's
manager) wanted to do, I don't know," said Slade. "It was bumpy and very
difficult to get the ball down and play."

When Yeovil did, it was usually Marcus Stewart doing the prompting. His
inside pass to left-winger Jaime Peters on 11 minutes saw the ball
crossed for Liam Bridcutt, but the midfielder's shot was deflected over.

Stewart volleyed wide after a cross from the hard-working Mark Lynch and
after the break centred for Marvin Williams to loop a header into the
keeper's arms.

Stewart had Yeovil's only other shot on target when his low, 83rd-minute
effort was pushed behind by Simon Royce in the home goal.

For all their effort, Gillingham went closest through Yeovil skipper
Terry Skiverton. Twice he nearly put through his own net during an
otherwise dominant performance at the back.

First Skiverton put a 42nd-minute Adam Miller free-kick inches wide and
then, on 73 minutes, his inadvertent flick header from a John Nutter
set-piece came back off the inside of a post and bounced to safety.

Maher, who was making only his third appearance in two years at Yeovil,
was shown a red card after he jumped into a 50-50 challenge with home
centre-back Simon King on 78 minutes.

The youngster got the ball but in the current climate, after Arsenal's
Eduardo suffered a broken leg the previous weekend, referee Darren
Deadman could not get his red card out quickly enough.

Yeovil held out despite five minutes of added time and Slade was left to
reflect on some battling displays from his men.

"Lynchy did OK at left-back considering he is not left-footed," he said.
"We have been working hard on that. He has slotted in - we haven't got
much choice there and he did fine for us.

"I thought in spells Anthony Barry did fine for us. He got caught a
couple of times on the ball but he looked like he might engineer
something for us.

"Marcus Stewart gave his all again and Skivo was commanding enough at
the back, so there were some good performances."

However, as Slade knows, several more will be needed before the first
Saturday in May.

Gillingham (3-5-2): Royce; Richards, Cullip, King (Oli 79); Clohessy,
Lewis, Crofts, Miller, Nutter; Griffiths (Mulligan 76), Facey (Jackson
90). Subs not used: Stillie, Fuller.

Yeovil Town (4-5-1): Flinders; Peltier, Forbes, Skiverton, Lynch;
Williams (Church 55), Bridcutt (Owusu 60), Barry, Stewart, Peters; Kirk
(Maher 74). Subs not used: Guyett, Warne.

SLADE: SHOW ME THE HUNGER

BY NATHAN JONES N.JONES@...

08:00 - 03 March 2008

Russell Slade saw his Yeovil Town side draw 0-0 at Gillingham and then
challenged them to show the same appetite against Cheltenham on Saturday.

But the Glovers manager also wants a greater goal threat from his team,
who have scored just once in the last six games.

Yeovil remain 16th in League One and six points above the relegation
zone. They host fellow strugglers Millwall a week tomorrow and go to
Bournemouth the following weekend.

"We have to show the same appetite that we showed for 60 minutes at
Gillingham," said Slade. "We need to go into those games with that sort
of conviction, energy and will to win.

"If we do that, I'm sure we can pick up the necessary points. We are
certainly not getting carried away - but we have kept a clean sheet and
we have something to build on.

"There is a little bit of satisfaction in that but there is an awful
long way to go. There are still 11 games and 33 points to play for.

"In the last two games we have shipped six goals. We needed to go back
to basics and, by and large, we did that quite well. Yes, there were
moments when there was room for improvement but we defended a lot better."

Yeovil will be without right-back Lee Peltier and midfielder Stephen
Maher for the Cheltenham and Millwall games. Peltier received his 10th
booking of the season and will serve a two-match ban.

Maher was shown a red card for a tackle on Simon King just four minutes
after coming on as a substitute. He got the ball but paid the penalty
for jumping into the challenge.

Slade said he would look at the incident again on video, but Gillingham
boss Mark Stimson believed Maher was "unlucky" to be sent off.

Maher has not been involved with the first team since November and is
set to sit out three games.

Could have sworn I'd posted most of these but I can't see them on this list, so
here they are.

I've deleted one comment unfortunately, due to language:

liz:
change lyoyd for church

Patrick Pender-Cudlip:
Least said soonest mended!

John RD:
On reflection if I had filled this in on Saturday I would have been far more
critical about individuals. Playing a 4:3:3 formation and not have a shot at
goal in the first 50 minutes is very very poor and leads me to say we have moved
on under RS – his Grimsby form should of shown me that we would be grinding out
games to draws taking the risk of losing, entertainment would go and that crowds
would reduce because of it! We have not had much luck this season and some
important players injured – but we have not invested in making our own luck –
the loan market is there to supplement the squad not replace it! Survival in L1
is our only aim now.

Bill Biss:
In short, that was a horror show. The defending was the worst I think I've
personally seen from a Yeovil side. This was my first look at Flinders,
Bridcott, Peters and Kirk and on that showing I wasn't at all impressed. I'm not
sure what's happened but again, the formation was all wrong and we had absolutly
nothing going forward. Lynch is not up to this standard, Owusu couldn't care
less about Yeovil Town and where's the fitness? Southend were cruising for
virtually the whole game and our lot look ruined, Rose in partiular had nothing
left after an hour and even young bucks like Peltier looked knackered. Woeful.

[And the Spinal Tap award for MOTM Voting goes to .... :-)]

Lawrie Poole:
Perhaps you should consider changing the marking so that zero is selectable.

Paul Matcham:
Difficult times not helped by the erratic performaces of refs and linesmen.
However the team work is currently so poor I would speculate that the Conference
and Div 2 winning Yeovil sides would beat our current first team quite easily!

chris johnson:
Only kirk played SLIGHTLY well. Why keep playing LLOYD? dIV 2 NEXT SEASON IF WE
DOD'T START WINNING.

zimmerman:
Feel we are going to lose an awful lot of casual supporters if our team continue
to play like this. Substitutions were extremely strange - taking best players
off and keeping Osuwu on!

PETE CAIRNS:
None of them deserve to be man of the match.

Ray Cleave:
Why don't we keep the ball on the ground and play passing football lik we used
to? All we seem to do is be obsessed with sending high balls up the bitch in the
forlorn hope that Owusu's head might connect with it!!??? And what has Zoltan
Steiber done to upset Russell Slade- he may not be a tackler but he can cross
the ball into the box!!?

[Zoltan Stieber is currently injured which is why he isn't playing - Badger]

andrew bartlett:
by far the worst performance for many years, needs to be sorted quick!!!!!!

lorraine:
Absolute dire, needs sorting out quickly.Where's the passion gone?

Trevor Slade:
Why o why do we try to play the long ball against players that are far bigger
and more mature than our team. We started ok but missed chances and after they
scored we weren't in it. We must support the manager if we are to stay up. If we
do that we will be in league one next season.

Defence played well.

Bill Biss:
My MOTM vote is a protest for Maher, as I've said elsewhere at least he showed
some desire to be on the pitch wearing a Yeovil shirt - sadly, it wasn't to last
long though! Barry again tried his best, let down by his poor distribution at
times but I think this was limited anyway but the lack of movement having only
one up front usually dictates. We are not Arsenal so the one up front formation
is clearly engineered to play for a draw and hope for a break down the wing with
the supposidly fast Williams and Peters - neither had an opportunity to test
this theory mind! The draw was a decent result in the end. That's even though
Skivo did his best to turn one into our net!

GLOVERS SHARE POINTS

11:00 - 03 March 2008

It was certainly not pleasant on the eye, but Yeovil Town managed to
emerge from their long League One trip to Gillingham with a share of the
spoils on Saturday.

Billed as a possible relegation six-pointer, a swirling wind, a pitch
more bumpy than a teenager's face and two teams who cannot buy a goal at
the moment ensured a scrappy game which was low on quality.

The travelling Glovers did not manage an effort on the home goal worthy
of mentioning until the 81st minute, by which time they had been reduced
to ten men after Stephen Maher had been harshly sent off two minutes
into his league debut for the Somerset outfit.

But they will be relieved to have stopped the rot which has seen them
leak six goals in their last two games and slip perilously close to the
drop zone.

The Glovers chose a compact 4-5-1 formation, with Andy Kirk treading a
lonely path up front in front of a dense midfield. But if that was the
plan, it did not work particularly well.

The first half was a fairly even affair, though the home side were
having the best of what chances there were on offer.

The Gills' twin strike force of Leroy Griffiths and Delroy Facey, like a
pair of Football League Yakubu clones, put the away defence under
pressure sporadically with their direct running, but rarely seriously
threatened.

Behind them, Adam Miller increasingly pulled the strings and became more
influential as the game went on.

Miller, who was playing Blue Square Premier football until recruited
from Stevenage Borough by Gills boss Mark Stimson when he came to Kent
in November, seemed to be the only man capable of taking a decent first
touch on the difficult surface and was at the heart of most of the home
side's best play.

If Yeovil thought that coming to a club which started the day in the
relegation places would give them a better chance of a result, they were
mistaken. The Gills started more quickly and despite the pitch, got the
ball down and tried to use the width of the pitch to their advantage.

They almost drew first blood, with Miller fluffing a good chance from
around 16 yards after good work from Griffiths on four minutes.

In the centre of the park, up against Miller, Anthony Barry was employed
to play a spoiling game, and he weighed in with some hefty tackles,
mainly on Miller, leading the pair to exchange pleasantries early on in
the game.

Yeovil's first chance came after 11 minutes, when Jamie Peters made a
good run down the wing before squaring it for Liam Bridcutt, who could
only blast over from next to the penalty spot.

There were a few half chances for both sides, mainly for the Gills, but
the best chance came just before half-time. A Gills free-kick from
Miller in the 43rd minute came across the Yeovil six-yard box, where the
only touch came from Glovers' centre back Terry Skiverton, whose
mistimed stab at the ball saw it whistle past Scott Flinders' right-hand
post as 22 players and 5,083 fans held their breath.

After the break, Gillingham came out in the same state of mind as the
first, but Yeovil seemed to have turned the gas off. The half was all
about Gills pressure, as the home side pressed for a rare win which
would have seen them gain ground on the teams above them.

Chances, when they came, fell to the home side. Griffiths put a chance
over the bar after Barry gave the ball away in midfield on 50 minutes
and 12 minutes later they had their best chance of the game. A mistake
from the otherwise solid March Lynch allowed Miller to break forward and
set up Griffiths eight yards out. His shot, however, was smothered by
the quick-thinking Flinders.

Yeovil tried to stem the tide by bringing on Simon Church after 52
minutes, Lloyd Owusu after 60 minutes and then Maher on 74. It made no
difference, but did create the most excitement of the afternoon.

Maher's first contribution was a strong run on goal that earned a
corner. His second was a tackle on Simon King best described as "full-
blooded".

From the stands it looked and sounded like a hard but fair tackle, but
the Gillingham players and fans immediately went berserk and referee
Darren Deadman had little hesitation in pulling out a straight red card
to the distraught young Irishman.

Gillingham tried to make use of their numerical advantage, but despite
some chaotic defending in the last ten minutes, Yeovil managed to hold
on for a hard-fought point.

With other results going their way, the Glovers are no worse off, but
upcoming six-pointers against Cheltenham and Millwall are increasingly
must-win games to make sure they stay clear of the basement melting pot.

YEOVIL VIEWPOINT WITH DAVID WILCOCK

11:00 - 03 March 2008

Stephen Maher must have had butterflies in his stomach before
yesterday's game, only his second appearance for the Glovers' first team.

Two minutes after his 74th-minute substitute appearance, those
butterflies had turned into feelings of horror as he made his way, head
in hands, to the dressing room after referee Darren Deadman had
brandished a red card. A Deadman walking, if you will.

Now, a warning: grumpy old man alert! When I were a lad, by 'eck etc,
tackles like the one Maher flew into were roundly applauded by the
watching men smoking pipes in their flat caps. Well, perhaps I'm not
that old but you get my point.

But not these days. From the lofty vantage point of the press box at
Priestfield, it looked like a feisty challenge, with neither player,
correctly, prepared to bottle it. The sound which reverberated around
the ground from the tackle was of boots hitting football, hard. The sort
of sound which makes retired centre-halves get misty-eyed.

But Simon King went to ground like he was John F Kennedy and Maher the
gunman on the grassy knoll, right on the touchline in front of the
mulleted and diamante-clad fans in the spiritual home of chav culture.
They promptly went berserk and off Maher went.

A horror challenge? On the evidence thus far, no, just a firm tackle
from a young lad keen to impress. He was clearly distraught as he walked
back to the dressing room.

But following last week's events, when Arsenal striker Eduardo suffered
his career-threatening leg break against Birmingham, referees will have
been under huge pressure from the faceless FA bureaucrats to clamp down
on anything remotely resembling a full-blooded tackle.

Any other week, the tackle might have prompted a yellow card - at worst
- if there was contact. But there is so much focus on tackles right now,
in a game where players get quicker and quicker at all levels and
tackles have to be far better timed (or more sly), that there was no
doubt the colour of card Maher was going to be given as Deadman reached
into the back pocket of his shorts.

There is a certain group of football fans who believe that making the
sport a semi non-contact sport, by banning any real form of tackling,
would make it a faster and more fascinating sport to watch and also
protect the most skilful players from the studs of the journeyman's
boot. These people are idiots. A well-timed and committed tackle,
especially in a goal-threatening situation, is just as exciting as
watching a crowd pleasing entertainer like Cristiano Ronaldo perform 24
stepovers in a row.

Lose the tackling element from the game, and we lose something of the
game itself.

I think its madness too. The WDP match report I posted earlier today had
one result and referred to three upcoming fixtures. Does that mean
they'll be subject to copyright infringement? Or would I for reposting
it here?

Mind you, maybe some of Yeovil's recent results need to be copyrighted. ;-)

YEOVIL DECIDE AGAINST APPEAL

08:00 - 04 March 2008

Yeovil Town will not appeal against the red card shown to Stephen Maher
at Gillingham on Saturday.

Manager Russell Slade made the decision after viewing the tackle on
Simon King again on video. Midfielder Maher will now serve a three-match
ban.

Slade said: "It could be slightly harsh on him but in the current
climate the fact of the matter is he took off and his feet were off the
floor at impact. We would be very, very hard-pushed to overturn it."

Slade had been hoping to have on-loan wingers Martin Woods (ankle) and
Zoltan Stieber (thigh) back for Saturday's home game against Cheltenham,
but the pair may miss out again. Lee Peltier is suspended, while Matty
Rose, who needed a pain-killing injection in his ankle, now has tonsillitis.

YEOVIL HOME IN ON WIN DOUBLE

BY NATHAN JONES N.JONES@...

08:00 - 05 March 2008

Marvin Williams sees no reason why Yeovil Town cannot win their two
upcoming home games. The flying winger believes the Glovers can build on
last weekend's rot-stopping 0-0 draw at Gillingham by defeating
Cheltenham on Saturday and Millwall on Tuesday.

"We ground it out at Gillingham," said Williams.

"We knew it was going to be a scrap. We got our heads down, showed some
mental toughness and got a point. It takes us a point further away from
relegation."

Williams has started the last two games for Yeovil after his season was
ravaged by an ankle injury that needed surgery - his only previous
league start had come in August.

The summer signing from Millwall is yet to show his top form but
believes he and the team are moving in the right direction.

"I am getting there," he said. "I am feeling more confident on the pitch
again and I am getting more comfortable. I came off (at Gillingham)
because of a bit of tiredness as I'd played on Saturday and in the
reserves on Tuesday.

"As for the team, I think we can take a lot of confidence from the game.

"We have got two home games coming up and I can't see why we can't take
maximum points from both of them."

Yeovil are offering fans a discount on tickets for the Millwall game if
they purchase one for the Cheltenham match at the same time.

Pre-match Main Stand tickets are normally £17 but are being reduced to
£10 for the March 11 clash with the Lions if supporters commit to both
fixtures.

Cheeseman sent off as Frome tumble out
By Wiltshire Times Reporter

Frome Town 1, Yeovil Town 2
FROME Town narrowly lost out on pulling off a giantkilling act in the
Somerset Premier Cup when they lost 2-1 against Yeovil Town at Badgers
Hill last night.

A crowd of over 600 generated a cracking atmosphere that saw the Robins
compete well in a first half that saw Yeovil field a very strong line-up.

The decisive moment of the game arrived right on the stroke of half-time
as Jamie Cheeseman, making his 100th appearance for Frome, was red
carded for deliberate handball.

Wales Under 21s international Simon Church stepped up to hammer home the
penalty.

Former Millwall winger Marvin Williams notched a second before Sam
Duggan pulled one back with a magnificent finish right at the end.

YEOVIL TO MARK RISE TO LEAGUE

08:00 - 06 March 2008

Yeovil Town are to mark the fifth anniversary of their promotion to the
Football League with a family day at Huish Park on Saturday, April 12,
when they host Crewe.

The game will be exactly five years to the day from when the club
secured the Conference title after Chester City failed to beat Woking.

The Glovers then celebrated their elevation by winning 4-0 at Doncaster
Rovers in an evening kick-off.

The day is also the 120th anniversary of the Football League and the
Crewe game could yet be a crucial match in the League One relegation battle.

The first 600 children through the turnstiles will receive a club goodie
bag, stars from Somerset Rebels speedway will be present and there will
be a beat the goalie competition.

p A reserve-strength Yeovil Town side won 2-1 at Frome Town last night
in the Somerset Premier Cup quarter-finals.

Striker Simon Church scored a 40th-minute penalty for the Glovers and
Marvin Williams made it 2-0 in the 55th minute.

Frome pulled a goal back in the 85th minute, but were unable to peg back
the Glovers' fringe men.

POLICE have insisted that Yeovil Town's eagerly-awaited Coca-Cola League
One clash with Leeds United at Huish Park be switched to a new date.

The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, April 26, with a 3pm
kick-off.

But club officials have now stated that due to 'police insistence' the
fixture has been brought forward by nearly 24 hours to be played on
Friday, April 25, with a 7.45pm kick-off.

A club spokesman said: "We would like to apologise for any inconvenience

Yeovil Town fans urged to buy Leeds United tickets NOW

YEOVIL Town supporters are being urged to buy their tickets well in
advance of what will be an eagerly-awaited clash with Leeds United later
this season.

The Glovers will entertain the once-mighty Leeds at Huish Park on the
new arranged date of Friday, April 25, at 7.45pm in what will be a
certain sell-out crowd.

The match is Yeovil's final home game of the season and there could be a
lot riding on it for both clubs.

The match has been deemed all-ticket which means fans will not be able
to buy any tickets on the day of the game.

The fixture has also been deemed by club bosses as a 'categorised match'
which means that ticket prices will incur an additional £4.

But tickets are available now from the Huish Park ticket office.

The message from the club is simple - buy your tickets now to avoid
missing out on watching the Glovers do battle with Leeds!

YEOVIL MOVED

Our final away game of the League One season at Yeovil Town has been
moved to Friday April 25 (7.45pm) at the insistence of the Police.

The game, one of our longest away trips of the season, was due to take
place on Saturday April 26 with a 3pm kick-off.

"We apologise for any inconvenience to our supporters caused by this
change which is at the absolute insistence of the local police," said
United CEO Shaun Harvey.

"We made our feelings known to both Yeovil and the Football League that
we did not support this alteration to the fixture, but we are ultimately
left with no choice in the matter."

Already this season, the club have travelled to Bournemouth and Southend
for midweek fixtures.

This game will be our first trip to Yeovil. When the two sides met at
Elland Road last October, a Mark De Vries, pictured, goal in the final
minute proved enough to secure us a 1-0 victory.

YEOVIL PLAYERS ARE URGED TO LIFT THE CROWD

08:00 - 07 March 2008

Russell Slade has called on Yeovil Town's players to lift the fans for
tomorrow's vital League One clash with Cheltenham Town.

After a worrying run of form, the Glovers are only six points above the
relegation zone.

"We have got to lift the crowd by our performance and get them on our
side," said manager Slade.

Yeovil are hoping an initiative which offers fans a discount on tickets
for Tuesday's game with Millwall if they buy an advance ticket for
tomorrow's game will prove popular.

Slade added: "We want to see as many fans come through the turnstiles as
possible - and particularly young ones as well.

"We are trying things to do that and hopefully they can get behind their
local team.

"All the games are important and hopefully we can finish as well as we
possibly can and on a positive note."

Slade is waiting for fitness reports on Matty Rose (ankle), Martin Woods
(ankle), Marc Bircham (groin) and Zoltan Stieber (thigh).

Downing on the Yeovil game
Posted on: Fri 07 Mar 2008

Cheltenham Town manager Keith Downing interviewed before the Coca-Cola
League One match at Yeovil Town:

"One or two results have gone our way again this week but the most
important thing is that we concentrate on getting our own results and
performances right. It's all about us and as I keep saying, matters are
in our own hands. I don't believe in creating added pressure because the
players are aware of the importance of all these games. There are 11
games left and I've said all along that whatever the outcome on
Saturday, we have to make sure that we do as well as we can in the
remaining 10 games. If we can get to that magic 54 points then we'll be
playing League One football next year.

"The whole squad is focused and geared up ready to play. We have been in
this position before and we have remained positive even in the dark days
before Christmas. What's important is that we have to be more resilient
in the away games and we cannot afford to go two goals down as we did at
Bournemouth, for example.

"I will have to mull over which system I want to play but I have to make
it simple for the players so that they go out and believe what they are
doing is right. We need to have a toughness about us in terms of our
competitiveness and the physical side but we also need to cut out the
individual errors. A culmination of those things will help us to improve
our away performances.

"There is a small dividing line in this division and if you take away
the top two or three teams the rest is much of a muchness. The
difference is often in scoring goals and having players that can get
them. Yeovil have always been a very well organised side and what
Russell Slade achieved with them last year was absolutely fantastic. Now
he's probably finding it difficult to repeat straight away but I have a
lot of admiration for him because he has done well wherever he has gone.

"There is an opportunity for us to go to Yeovil and be positive.
Although we haven't won for a while the Friday night game against
Southend was a point gained because the performance wasn't great but
there was a resilience about us against a side that has spent a lot of
money trying to get into the top six. We are competing with some very
healthy, wealthy clubs and are still in there.

"I think Steve Brooker is getting stronger all the time and we have a
threat with him and Gillespie together. I have a choice to make
regarding the wide players with two out of four potential players. Alex
Russell has trained this week and we are hopeful that he will be
involved. Michael Townsend is making good progress but after four months
out it's too soon for him to play at the moment."

Yeovil next for Robins
By ER - 07/03/2008 16:08

Cheltenham boss Keith Downing takes his side to Huish Park to take on
Yeovil Town this weekend and he will be looking for the win that would
ease relegation worries somewhat.

On-loan midfielder Alex Russell has recently been sidelined with a
stomach problem but has returned to training and could feature against
the Glovers if he proves his fitness in time.

Midfielder Scott Brown sits out the second game of a three-match ban for
his 90th-minute red card against Bournemouth.

Michael Townsend (illness) moved a step closer to a first-team return by
playing for the reserves in midweek - his first 90-minute appearance
since November - but the game will come too soon for him.

Gavin Caines (knee) and John Finnigan (ankle) are both going through
periods of rehabilitation after undergoing operations which have ruled
them out for the remainder of the season.

Injury-hit Yeovil could welcome back four players when they host the
Robins.

Marc Bircham (hamstring) and Zoltan Stieber (thigh) both trained with
the squad on Thursday and could be included, while manager Russell Slade
also hopes that Matty Rose and Martin Woods overcome their ankle
injuries to be included.

Scott Guyett is pushing for a start after being left on the bench in
last weekend's 0-0 draw with Gillingham following his recovery from a
rib injury.

Young midfielder Stephen Maher is a definite absentee against the Robins
after he was sent off just three minutes into his league debut at
Priestfield for a crude lunge on Gills defender Simon King and he begins
a three-match ban.

Yeovil are also still without long-term injury victims Steve Mildenhall
(knee), Lee Morris (knee) and Nathan Jones (arm).

RIVAL BOSS TELLS FANS TO BACK SLADE

BY JAMES MCNAMARA

08:00 - 08 March 2008

Cheltenham Town boss Keith Downing has urged critical Yeovil Town
supporters to cut Russell Slade some slack.

Glovers manager Slade, who led the club to last season's League One
play-off final at Wembley, has come under pressure following a run of
only one win in 12 games.

Downing intends to pile further misery on his former Notts County
team-mate when he takes his Cheltenham side to Huish Park this afternoon.

But he said: "I think Russell has done tremendously well since he has
been at Yeovil.

"He may be facing a bit of criticism at the moment, but I believe that
is wholly unjustified.

"Taking Yeovil to the play-offs last season was an absolutely fantastic
effort and perhaps an overacheivement.

"Now he is finding it a difficult task to repeat, but I have a
tremendous amount of admiration for the man."

Downing is no stranger to supporters' criticism. An unpopular choice to
replace John Ward five months ago, he endured a difficult start to his
first managerial job. But a good run of form since the turn of the year
has started to win over his critics.

"I understand that all supporters want to see winning football," added
Downing.

"You have to look at the financial constraints that clubs like ours and
Yeovil have to work under, though, and realise that it can be a tough job.

"Russell has probably become a victim of his own success - but it
happens everywhere.

"Overacheivement does have a downside and that is the difficulties of
trying to sustain that success."

Andy Kirk, the striker recently signed from Northampton on a two-year
deal, was the hero as Yeovil recorded only their second victory in 13
League One outings.

It came at an important time as it put eight points between themselves
and Cheltenham. With Gillingham also losing, manager Russell Slade is
confident his team will not be dragged into a serious relegation dogfight.

Kirk embarked on a tremendous 60-yard run in the eighth minute to set up
the opening goal. He appeared to lose control as he was about to pull
the trigger, but a panicking Cheltenham defence contrived to put the
ball into their own net off Alan Wright.

It gave Yeovil the impetus they needed and they could have had more
goals. Instead, it was Cheltenham who had the best chance to draw level
right on half-time.

They were awarded an 18-yard free-kick in a central position when
Matthew Rose brought down Steven Gillespie. Wright had the chance to
atone for his own goal, but fired into the defensive wall.

The Robins' first-half display was described as inept by manager Keith
Downing but they perked up after the break, most of the danger coming
from loan signing Steve Brooker, who is likely to return to Bristol City
after one more match.

It was a typical piece of Brooker opportunism that brought the equaliser
in the 64th minute.

Substitute Ashley Vincent got in a cross from the right and when skipper
Terry Skiverton failed to clear, Brooker was handily placed at the far
post to crack home a left-footed drive.

Yeovil won the game in the 74th minute. A throw-in on the right was not
dealt with by the Cheltenham defence and Kirk cashed in to rifle home a
ten-yard shot.

He should have had another in stoppage time, but completely in the clear
and with the goal at his mercy he fired at the legs of keeper Shane Higgs.

GLOVERS AIM TO PULL CLEAR OF RIVALS
STUART JAMES AT HUISH PARK

11:00 - 08 March 2008

It will be a case of friends reunited at Huish Park today, when Russell
Slade comes up against a familiar face looking for the points that would
pull his Yeovil Town side further away from the relegation zone.

The Glovers entertain Cheltenham Town, another team fighting for their
Coca-Cola League One lives, and their manager, Keith Downing, is a
former team-mate of Slade's from their days wearing the black and white
stripes of Notts County.

Today, though, friendship will be put to one side as both teams go in
search of three crucial points that would do wonders to either side's
hopes of avoiding the drop.

"I played with Keith at Notts County, he is a good lad and he has taken
over a tough job from John Ward, but I think he has done exceptionally
well and he seems to have stabilised the ship since John went to
Carlisle United," Slade said. "They have every chance of staying up. He
was a 100 per-center as a player and would give everything.

"I think the loan signings they have taken in, [Steve] Brooker and Alex
Russell to name but a couple, have done particularly well for them. I
don't know if Alex is going to be fit or not at this stage, but Brooker
will provide a threat up front.

"There is no question about it, when he is fit and on the pitch, he is
an absolute handful and more than good enough for this level."

Taking that into account, then today is probably a bad time for the
Glovers' boss to be forced into a defensive reshuffle. Right-back Lee
Peltier serves the first instalment of a two-match ban, but Slade does
have plenty of options available to him. Terrell Forbes could play
there, but breaking up his partnership with Terry Skiverton after they
performed well in last week's goalless draw at Gillingham is unlikely.

"Lee has been tremendous and has been even better since we signed him
[on a full transfer after a loan spell]," Slade said. "He misses the two
games and, with the likes of Matty Rose and Martin Woods struggling -
young [Zoltan] Stieber and Marc Bircham did train today, though - we
will have to see if there are any repercussions from their first day's
training in a while. We have options and someone will have to do the
job. We have Craig Alcock or it might be Forbesy, we will have to wait
and see."

Slade added: "Last week, we were very resolute at the back, to be
honest. Forbes and Skiverton were back to their best and that is the
sort of spirit that we will require over the next few games."

Slade is keen for his side to ensure their place in League One for next
season as soon as possible and a win today would put them within five
points of reaching the half-century. It won't be easy, though. Earlier
in the campaign, Yeovil looked on course for a win at Whaddon Road
before Gavin Caines popped up with an 89th-minute goal to restrict
Yeovil to one point.

"They never get turned over by many, their games are always tight. They
seem to either win 1-0, draw 1-1 or lose 1-0, so I expect it to be a
very tight affair on Saturday," the Glovers' boss added.

"It was a battle up there, we got ourselves in front and I thought it
was quite comfortable and it was just in the later stages that
Cheltenham started to put us under some pressure and pegged us back,
being the home team. Eventually they threw a long ball into the box
which eluded everybody and trickled into the net. We don't want that to
happen if we get ourselves in front this time, we want to make sure we
get the three points.

"All the games between now and the end of the season are important and
we want to finish as well as we possibly can and on a positive note. It
has been a difficult season, but we want to finish as well and we will
be doing everything within our power to get the three points."

The Glovers' chief also revealed that goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall could
be back playing by the end of the month and training again in two weeks.

"Mildy is doing very, very well and, in two weeks, he might be able to
start light training again. But we don't expect him to be back for two
weeks after that, really, so we are looking at probably three to four
weeks as a rough time period for Steve to be back in the frame," Slade said.

"We still have Scott [Flinders] for two or three more games and we will
weigh things up at the time and see how Steve is before we make any
decision on bringing someone in or extending Scott's deal. I think that
is the important thing. We will see where we are in terms of our League
position as well, because it would be nice at some stage to maybe give
Darren Behcet some football."

YEOVIL'S home League One clash with Leeds United has been brought
forward to Friday, April 25 (7.45pm) on police advice.

BROOKER STRIKES, BUT CHELTENHAM LOSE IT LATE ON

21:51 - 08 March 2008

Yeovil eased their relegation worries with a spirited performance that
brought them only their second win in 13 games as they beat fellow
strugglers Cheltenham 2-1.

They went ahead after eight minutes when Andy Kirk embarked on a superb
60-yard run and appeared to lose control but Robins defender Andy
Lindergaard blasted a clearance against colleague Alan Wright and the
ball rebounded into the net.

Yeovil continued to create the better chances although Wright could have
atoned for his own goal in the 35th minutes when he hammered an 18-yard
free kick into the defensive wall.

Cheltenham continued to push for the equaliser and it came after 64
minutes when Ashley Vincent got in a cross from the right and loanee
Steve Brooker picked his spot at the far post to fire in.

But the Glovers grabbed the winner 16 minutes from time when a throw-in
found its way to Kirk and he fired in from close range.
