WG: Club will not risk budget on one star

YEOVIL Town will not blow their playing budget on one big name and risk the
future of the club.
Manager Terry Skiverton said that he, assistant-manager Nathan Jones and
Glovers' chief executive Martyn Starnes were talking with potential new players
almost every day.
However, Skiverton said the club will not be rushed into making any new signings
and will certainly not commit big money to the first players to agree to sign.
Skiverton said: "There are lots of players out of contract and it is no good
throwing away your budget on the first two or three who are out there."
The manager is yet to announce his first permanent signing as Glovers' boss and
said he is tied by Football League rulings.
Traditionally, playing contracts do not run out until the end of June – so
that means legal paperwork cannot be completed until the beginning of July.
Skiverton said that any clubs claiming to have signed a new player on a free
transfer will have to wait until the end of the existing contract. This leaves
the player open to offers from other clubs offering better deals.
Skiverton said: "If we get a player down and do it in front of the Press with
the scarves and get everybody out, that player is only agreeing to sign.
"Legally he can still walk away if someone comes in and offers him more money.
Legally none of these clubs who are saying they have signed this person or that
person have got a foothold on them."
Several Coca-Cola League One clubs have shown off new signings to the Press and
fans already
However, Yeovil insist they will not follow suit until they can legally lay
claim to a player.
Skiverton acknowledged some fans' frustrations at Yeovil's apparent lack of
movement in the transfer market. But he urged supporters to be patient – safe
in the knowledge that new squad additions are not far away.
The manager is keeping his wish list under wraps but said several of his targets
could join the club at the end of this month.
"We are very close to signing a number of targets and there is going to be two
or three towards the end of June who we will say we will be signing," said the
33 year old who began his football career with Chelsea.
"Legally you cannot sign someone until his contract is up. The fans will have to
be patient with that, but knowing that Nathan and Martyn Starnes and I are in
dialogue with players nearly every day."
