<<USA Canoe Kayak (USACK) is reorganizing its governance structure and
part of that is recruiting an entirely new Board of Directors.

January 31 The current USACK Board will vote at the Annual Meeting
on the adoption of the new Bylaws proposed by the Governance Task
Force. All that follows assumes the Board will approve the new Bylaws
in substantially the form proposed. The Initial Nominating and
Governance Committee may or may not be ready to introduce the four
Independent Directors by this date.

February 2 Call for Nominations for five new director positions and
the AAC representative and Alternate will be emailed to all current
members who are eligible to vote. This is the date of record for
eligibility to vote and to be nominated. Memberships must be current
on this date and have expiration dates no earlier than March 3

Who can vote?

In order to vote, you must be at least 18 years of age and be a member
in good standing as of February 2, 2009. In addition your membership
expiration date must not be earlier than March 3. Members who join or
renew their membership after this date will not be eligible to vote in
this Special Election.>>

Dear Davey and Jennifer,
I am an italian canoist and pasionate to ww slalom, I am a member of some
yahoogroup concerning slalom canoing in USA and so I have the chance to send
this mail answering to your post.

I met Davey and Cathry at an italian restaurant near Holme Pierpont (Nottingham)
during the europa Cup in '88, a long time ago.

I am still "inlove" with slalom kayaking and my purpouse is to develope it in my
hometown: Rome (Italy)

I invite you to visit these sites about some slalom races we organised in the
centre of Rome.
It was a tribute to the first historical edition in '69, on the right side of
the tiberina island, so we managed two other editions in 2007 and 2008, on the
left side, cause the right side is no more praticable.

http://www.slalomtiberino.it/index.html

I hope we can continue it and make the event even bigger, and also have in the
future a permanent slalom site.

Regards and happy paddling

Forward from USA Canoe/Kayak
November 13, 2008

After much deliberation, the Board of Directors of USA Canoe/Kayak
have voted to postpone the Committee elections in addition to Board
elections.

The rewriting of the By-Laws and the restructuring of the Board of
Directors will almost certainly require thought about the proper
structure of the Committees. So, we felt this was the best course of
action. Our Annual Meeting currently set for December 6-7, 2008 in
Charlotte, NC will be postponed, per Section 2.06 of our By-Laws,
until January 31-February 1, 2009, which is within the 60 day
postponement limit. We will still have a regular Board meeting in
Charlotte on December 6-7, 2008 as well as Committee meetings. Our
intention is to have the final version of the Bylaws posted to the
membership for a 30 day comment period starting December 31, 2008.

In the meantime, we have organized a task force whose sole purpose is
to study and recommend best practices in governance and present the
Board with recommended new set of By-Laws and Nominations and election
procedures and Committee structure and procedures. Their first draft
of these is due by December 6-7, 2008 for review by the Board and
Committees. The task force is composed of:

* Anne Blanchard, a sprint paddler and former USACK Board President
whose day job is serving as a legal aid attorney in Connecticut

* Jamie McEwan, an Olympic medalist in slalom in 1972 and still
competing; is a writer living in Connecticut

* Cliff Meidl, two-time sprint Olympian and motivational speaker who
works as a money manager in the LA area

* Risa Shimoda, a long time whitewater paddler and activist who is a
consultant in the DC area and the chair of the USACK Freestyle Committee

* Chuck Wielgus, former Executive Director of USACK predecessor USCKT
and presently ED of the highly successful USA Swimming NGB in Colorado
Springs

This group will be supported by staff members from USACK and USOC:

* Eric Parthen, Director, NGB Organizational Development at USOC; he
has worked with more than 30 similar groups at other NGB's

* Bob Gambardella, Director, Sport Partnerships at USOC, is the
primary contact at USOC for USACK and also has extensive experience in
NGB governance

* David Yarborough, Executive Director of USACK who has worked with
the USOC for the past three years to understand the requirements of
the USOC reform.

We are very excited for the future of USA Canoe/Kayak and we hope that
you are equally excited. Our goal is to attract qualified Board
members who can help us attract resources and sponsorship in these
trying times.

Please visit the Community section of our website,
http://www.usack.org/blog, to view David Yarborough's blogs on the
progress of the task force.

Sincerely,

Gina Sanchez, President
USA Canoe/Kayak

Better yet, do folks know who is running for re-election, or who wants

Thanks a lot for your input.

Here's the election manual, but I really need to know who wants to be

Dear US Whitewater Team Alumni and Friends,

1. At this time I'm planning for us to have two reunions, one at the
slalom nationals (Deep Creek, MD, the race is August 4) and one at the
wildwater nationals (Charlemont, MA, August 24-26). Thoughts on this
are welcome.

2. There is an alumni web site in the works. I'm hoping it will be
up within a month or so. More on this later.

3. Below, a copy of a letter from Nic Borst, athlete rep to the
slalom committee. [Nic's letter is already posted on this site.] If you
have comments or suggestions, pleases pass them along to Nic.

Happy spring, everyone.

Mr. Borst,

I think it's really great that you are asking this question.

Although this will probably spark a vigorous debate (I hope), and I
find it truely strange coming from my keyboard, I think one of the
top priorities for slalom is visibility (read: marketing). If a
concerted effort were made, perhaps in a small geographic area with a
good venue (say Charlotte), much of what many of the athletes really
need would likely follow (read: sponsorship) much more easily.

Slalom is an incredibly cool sport, with unique characteristics that
I can't think of any other Olympic sport shares (no practice on
actual course, sometimes on 'natural' rivers), is so incredibly
technical, and could be very interesting/entertaining for
knowledgeable spectators.

It is a great challenge to provide athletes what they need to compete
at the world level, if the sport is so esoteric that the audience is
a couple of hundred people nationwide.

A target audience that would be easiest to reach and also to educate
might be:

1) Recreational whitewater paddlers/competitive rodeo paddlers
2) Recreational rafters
3) Other kayakers (ocean/flat-water/etc.)

P.S. I think that all slalom athletes that have an opportunity to
paddle at the Charlotte course, should make it a point to personally
thank Vic Howie (and all the other folks who worked on this project).
Without Vic's vision, persistence and stamina, this project would not
have happened. Three cheers for Vic !

If you don't know who Vic is, or haven't met him, make it a point to
find him and shake his hand for pulling off the nearly impossible.
Just the planning and coordination of this project represents many
hundreds of hours of work ... this before the first dump truck
rolled!!!

Hi Everyone!

There was a proposal brought forward at the USA Whitewater Slalom
Committee meeting a few months ago to compile a document that lists
the wants, needs and goals of slalom athletes in the US.
Unfortunately while there was some talk about getting the ball moving
on this project, it fell by the way side. I, however, feel that it is
very important for the slalom community to have something in writing
to help guide the Slalom Committee to better address the needs of all
of the athletes in the US and not just the National Team members. I
am going to be working on this project over the next few weeks, and
plan to give a copy of the document to the USAWS Committee at our
next meeting, which will be on May 8, 2007.

So what do I need from you? I need to know what you need as far as
support both from the NGB (National Governing Body, USA Canoe Kayak)
and the smaller slalom based organizations and clubs around the
country? What do you need in general? In an ideal world, how would
you be best supported so that you can achieve your athletic goals? I
don't need a lot of info, just bullet points. I am totally open to
any ideas, so even if the ideas feel radical or way beyond what is
>currently possible, send them to me! I want to hear what you think!
An example might be -- "We need a place where coaches and clubs list
contact info so athletes wanting to participate in workouts can have
a means to contact a coach and get a training schedule, as well as
published letters from clubs inviting athletes to come and take part
in workouts at any time."

I would also like to get some ideas about how we can help athletes
making the transition from high school to college find support
networks so that they will have the ability to continue training, and
racing, and can feel like regardless of where they go, they will be
welcomed and supported. I would like to help limit as much as
possible the turnover rate that exists when athletes make this
transition. I know that there are a lot of ideas out there, and I
want to here them and get them written down, so we can help the
people in charge of our sport better meet our needs. You all have a
voice and you deserve to take part in the progression of our sport.
Lets try to bridge the disconnect that exists between the boards and
all of you. Coaches, you know a lot about what
your athletes at all levels need and want, and I welcome any input
that you have. So please take 20 minutes, sit down and take this
opportunity to get your voice heard. I am sorry that I don't have
that many email contacts, so please forward this message to anyone
you think would like to contribute something constructive to this
effort!

Many Thanks!

Hi, I am a physical therapist and grad student working on my PhD in Sports
Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and I am studying shoulder injuries in
whitewater kayakers. I am finally getting my dissertation study started and need
some volunteers to come in and help me. I am looking for people who have
shoulder pain, which bothers them when they are paddling.

My study looks at several factors which are associated with shoulder pain
including strength and flexibility. Plus, I am doing 3D motion analysis and
measuring muscle activation while kayaking on a stationary kayak.
Testing takes place at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side of
Pittsburgh. There is only 1 test session which takes less than 3 hours to
complete. I can schedule testing around your availability (weekends, evenings,
etc). I will be testing starting in January. You will be compensated $100 for
your time. Also, I can evaulate and give suggestions about your shoulder, if you
like.

If you are interested please reply to this email. Just indicate you are a boater
with shoulder pain and I will get back to you with more info.

I really appreciate anyone willing to help. I am ready to graduate!

Thanks,

Craig

We are getting the word out to area whitewater groups about our
upcoming IWHOF Induction Weekend, October 20 (Induction Dinner and
Ceremony) and October 21 (Whitewater Legends Brunch) in McHenry.
In case you had not heard, our 2006 Class of Inductees are:
Advocates- Tom Johnson (USA) and Martin Litton (USA)
Champions- Gisela Grothaus-Steigerwald (GER) and Scott Shipley (USA)
Explorer- Herbert Rittlinger (GER)
Pioneer- Jim Snyder (USA)

Gisela and her son will attend as will the daughter of Herbert
Rittlinger (deceased 1978) to receive her father's award. It should
also be a great event to celebrate with one of our "local" boaters-
Jim Snyder.

We are also spreading the word about the opportunity to be one of the
first boaters on ASCI's new whitewater course. You can buy a ticket
to the Whitewater Legends Brunch on Saturday October 21 and not only
meet our whitewater legends but also receive a tour of the course.
And, as an attendee of the Brunch, you may also be able to experience
the rapids created by the McLaughlin Wave Shaper. If you

1) would like to paddle a kayak or canoe or ride a raft,
2) are experienced on Class III water and
3) have your own gear,

contact Matt Taylor mtaylor@... to become part
of the first-come, first-served participant pool. There are a limited

email from Risa Shimoda & the McLaughlin Whitewater Design Group

To Friends and Colleagues of MWDG,

The whitewater course at the Adventure Sports Center in McHenry, MD
will see water for the first time on October 16th. Needless to say,
there's lots of excitement about this by all who are involved,
especially the project's founders who were inspired to create a great
man made whitewater course after the 1989 World Championships on the
Savage River.

On Friday the 20th ASCI will be inducting the 2nd class of the
Whitewater Hall of Fame, celebrating an international cadre of pretty
incredible, very special contributors to whitewater sport. The next
morning MWDG will host a brunch and provide a short presentation on
the project. Hear the designers describe the vision for the course,
and head out to the course for a brief tour. Conditions permitting,
water will run for those interested in braving what might be chilly
weather.

As sponsors of the weekend, we invite you to participate, and have a
limited number of guest seats at both the induction dinner
and "Legends Brunch." If you're far from western Maryland, view this
as simply a notice that we're psyched about the project nearing
reality. If you're within striking distance to make the trip, let us
know if you'd like to join us as a dinner / brunch guest. As we have
a limited number of seats for our guests, please let us know as soon
as you can. Of course, there are additional tickets available at
http://www.adventuresportscenter.com/IWHOF/hofame.htm

After this fall's tuning period, the course will go into hibernation
until the early spring. The Adventure Sport Center will opening in
April, 2007 so there will be plenty of opportunity to visit should
this next month be impractical. Please don't hesitate to ask
questions and please DO let us know if you plan a trip.

I'm considering anyone who raced in the Europa or World Cup a team member. I've
added
these; does anyone have contact info? I'd appreciate it, Jamie

Pan-American Slalom Championships and
Itaipu International Open – September 2006

After a meeting with the ICF Slalom Racing Committee concerning the
possible lack of water during the Pan-American Slalom Championships
and Itaipu International Open it was decided that:

Due to the most severe drought in the state of Paraná in the last 70
years, (the attached graphic shows that the Itaipu Lake went below
the level that could cause lack of water (218,50) in the course only
5 times during the whole history of Itaipu)

Due to the fact that the guarantee for water during the competition
planed for September 23rd and 24th this year will be possible only by
the end of August, (when the National Electric System Operator
determines the level all Brazilian dams based on the climatic/level
situation in all reservoirs. This deadline is obviously too late for
teams decision and logistics)

The Pan-American Slalom Championships and Itaipu International Open –
September 2006 (Slalom Preworlds Event) is to be postponed with the
condition that a two week training camp and a test event be provided
in March 2007 with secure dates.

The training camp and the test event secure dates must be presented
to ICF EXCO during their meeting from September 8th to 10th, 2006.

All dates and guarantees for the training camp and test event must be
must be communicated by September 15th, 2006 by e-mail to all
national federations headquarters.

Brazilian Canoe Confederation - CBCa – would like to apologize for
any trouble caused by this unpredictable circumstance, giving
immediate information on the decision as soon as possible.

Update on Slalom Nationals
by David Yarborough, Executive Director of USACK

With unprecedented interest from around the world in our 50th
anniversary edition of the USA Canoe/Kayak Slalom National
Championships, we want to provide everyone with an update of our
plans for the event less than a month from its scheduled opening on
August 25.

Of overriding concern is the question of whether the new US National
Whitewater Center will be ready in time to host this important event.
We continue to monitor the status of the Center day by day. Though
the USNWC has not been able to meet various target opening dates this
summer—and is still as of today not open to the public---we remain
confident that the facility will be able to host our event at the end
of this month.

The whitewater course at the USNWC looks great and is sure to provide
a very stern test to the competitors at this year's Nationals. If you
haven't already seen the video of Scott Shipley paddling on the new
course, check out www.USNWC.org.

Overall the construction at the USNWC is on schedule and it all looks
fantastic. From the time of our decision this spring to hold the
event here we knew that the main buildings, landscaping and some of
the land-based features of the facility would not be finished before
the dates of our event. But the strong interest in the new
competition channel at USNWC compelled the Whitewater Slalom
Committee to hold the event there even in the midst of on-going
construction activities.

There remain a few critical aspects of the USNWC that must be
completed within the next few weeks in order for them to be able to
host our event. These include improvements to the temporary access
road and various health and building code inspections. We have been
in close consultation with the project leaders, its contractors and
the local government officials involved and have received their
expressions of confidence that all these items can be completed in
time, though perhaps just in time, for our Slalom Nationals.

You may have heard that the ACA Open Boat Slaloms that were scheduled
at USNWC from August 18-20 have been relocated to the Nantahala.
USACK was aware of the deliberations that led to this decision and
believes that the ACA made the best decision it could based on the
information available. In addition to wanting to avoid the risks of
having their event impacted by further delays in the USNWC opening,
it should also be noted that the ACA event was planned for a
different part of the USNWC where the ability to hold a large event
prior to the completion of the whole project was more difficult than
on the competition channel which has been designed specifically to
host slalom races.

We have heard from a number of athletes questioning the changes in
schedule for this event from that in some prior years. While some of
these changes have been made to make the event more comfortable for
all participants (avoiding the searing heat of this summer, etc.),
others have been made to enhance the event and to accommodate the
unique characteristics of the venue. In every case these decisions
were taken with athlete input and agreement with the interests of
participating athletes in the forefront. The new circumstances at the
USWNC may allow us to tweak the schedule somewhat, but the timing of
the finals on Saturday evening is still fixed.

We have a great response to this year's 50th annual slalom nationals
with more than 50 athletes already registered already. We hope that
many friends of slalom will visit the new facility and that many
former participants in previous Slalom Nationals will join our
celebration as well.

We will be posting frequent (at least weekly) updates about the
Slalom Nationals and the opening of the USNWC on the USACK website
starting with this announcement. Please check the www.USACK.org
homepage from time to time to stay abreast of our plans.
