To Whitewater Team alumni and friends,
I propose that we start up an alumni association.
I would like to have more input before we try to decide on rules and procedures,
but here
are my suggestions:
1) Anyone can join. Once we get official, we might have to split members into
voting and
non-voting, with the team alumni (coaches and managers included) being the
voting
members, but we can deal with that down the line.
2) No fees. This is like your high school or college alumni association: if
you're a
graduate, you're already a member. Non-alums simply have to ask to join.
3) The association has three basic goals: to foster contact among alumni, to
promote the
sport, and to support the current team. Our first step is probably to get an
email
newsletter going, and share news.
4) There have been two suggestions for names: US Whitewater Alumni, (USWA), or
Whitewater Team Alumni and Friends (WTAF). We could combine these: US
Whitewater
Alumni and Friends (USWAF), or US Whitewater Team Alumni and Friends (USWTAF).
I'd
like to have Canadian members, but when we get to supporting the team, it's
probably too
complicated to support the teams of both countries, so in that sense this is a
US
association. Thoughts on this welcome.
5) I think that we should probably apply for non-profit status, which will
unfortunately
mean jumping through certain legal hoops.
The first step is to get the word out, and compile contact emails, addresses,
and phone
numbers. Below is a partial listing of team alumni. The Slalom list is pretty
close to being
complete, thanks to a very cool German website, <http://slalom.flechtner.de/
index.html>. The Wildwater list is quite incomplete, as it is cobbled together
from The
River Masters, a few old programs, and an email or two. Please, please don't be
insulted if
you're a team alum and not on the list; this is just a start. I'm sure typos
and such have
crept in too. An asterisk before a name indicates that I already have complete
contact info
for that person.
So, step one, please send me your complete contact info: name, address, email,
phone.
The address and phone will not be made public, but the email address will,
unless you tell
me otherwise. Also, please pass this along to other team alums, and/or send me
their
contact info.
I think we can have fun with this. I hope you agree.
Cheers, Jamie

Dear Whitewater Slalom Community,
It seems that once more the US will not send a C-2 to the World Championships.
I
consider this a serious mistake, for two excellent reasons, and one decent one.
1) It's bad for the sport internationally. We all know that it's a boost to the
sport when the
Pakistanis send their first competitor, or the Chinese, or any new country.
Correspondingly it's bad when a country withdraws. By withdrawing from
competition in
the C-2 class the US reduces the importance of the C-2 event on the
international scene.
If other countries follow the US lead and withdraw from C-2, it could lead to
the event
being dropped from the Olympics, or even from the World Championships. Now it's
true
that some people see C-2 as the least important event, but many others consider
it the
most exciting to watch, and the most photogenic. When Sports Illustrated chose
to run a
single photo from the 2000 trials, it chose the C-2 team of Haller and Taylor.
There are a
number of similar examples. Would they have simply run a different photo if C-2
had not
been in the competition? Maybe--but more likely, no photo at all. If you kill
C-2, you
hurt the overall sport as well; one of the most visually exciting classes will
be lost;
television coverage will be further reduced.
2) It's bad for the development of the sport within the US. If applied in other
years, it
would have prevented future champions from participating. For example, in 1975
Jon
Lugbill raced C-2 with his brother Ron, placing 22nd. Seeing the award ceremony
he
"went nuts," (as reported in Endicott's The Ultimate Run), and this experience
provided
emotional fuel for future paddling and training. Would Jon have pursued
whitewater
without this international experience? Maybe....
Another example: if you had used today's method, you would have excluded Joe
Jacobi
and Scott Strausbaugh from the 1987 World Championship team. Would Joe and
Scott
have nevertheless stuck with it to win a gold medal in 1992? Quite possibly
not. So the
percentage rule might well have removed the only Olympic Gold Medal ever won by
the US
in slalom. Bad rule. (By the way, repeat that three times: the only US Olympic
slalom gold
medal was won in the C-2 class.)
There aren't many Jon Lugbills, Strausbaughs and Jacobis, but the influence of
including,
rather than excluding, potential team members is widespread. Look, for example,
at Mark
Ciborowski, a C-2 team member in 1989 and 1991. Mark went back to his home
area,
Manchester, New Hampshire, and poured an enormous amount of effort into
developing a
permanent slalom course on the Merrimack river there. Two slalom races a year
are held
on the course he created, one spring and one fall, so that each year one to two
hundred
racers benefit from this site. Add to this, the exposure for slalom--the fall
race is held in
conjunction with the city's "Riverfest," a festival with many thousands of
attendees, all of
whom are exposed to the race. If you had excluded Mark, you would have dealt
New
England slalom a major blow. In general, excluding potential team members
diminishes
our already marginal sport.
3) It's patently unfair. Everyone knows that in some events the results are
more spread
out than in others; I have never trained for or competed in a running race in my
life, but at
one time I would have "made the percentage" in the half-mile, my time being
within 15%
of the then world record; many thousands of people, those who actually train,
are within
5%. That's because running, in and of itself, is easy. In a difficult sport,
like whitewater,
the results are naturally more spread out than in track. And within whitewater,
C-2 is the
most difficult event; results are naturally more spread out in C-2 than in the
other classes.
(Yes, this is in part because there are fewer competitors, but also, there are
fewer
competitors because it's more difficult.) To have the same standard for all the
classes is
as unfair as it would be to apply track percentages to whitewater.
I've hesitated to sound off on the percentage question before, because, since I
do still race
C-2, I'm an involved party. But I've decided to speak out, for two reasons:
one, it has
come to seem so obvious, that the percentages are a bad idea, that I think even
an
interested party can make the case and be believed. And two, I have a
suggestion that
does not involve me.
Two C-2 teams did qualify for World Cup participation, and I believe will travel
to Europe.
If one or both can swing the time off, and the financial burden, by all means
let them
compete in the Worlds.
I have heard the argument made that this will 1) Reduce the money available for
more
serious athletes, and 2) Reduce the coaching time for more serious athletes. If
this is a
real problem, by all means make both money and coaching time contingent on the
percentages. But don't make World Championship participation contingent. Get
some
boats on the water. Give up-and-coming teams the chance to see what the Worlds
are
like. Spread out national team participation. Promote the sport. For several
years, when I
was first competing, the US had the biggest team at the World Championships, and
some
Europeans laughed at this. They weren't laughing for long. By the late 70's
the US was
still sending a big team; it was also winning big time.
Inclusion, not exclusion, is the the US way, and has always been part of our
cussed,
disorganized, underfunded, but surprisingly effective road to the top. Let's
get back on
that road.
Sincerely,
Jamie McEwan

According to Mike Sloan the agenda items will include a review of the
development program, review and approval of the budget (mostly review,
since most of the budget is set by the USOC), review and approval of

Jamie,
I don't think that Joel's great work makes this group
(sports.groups.yahoo.com) obsolete, but the group is what the
members want and make of it.
The wwslalom forum is supported by Yahoo (advertising pays the
bills, groan), is likely to be supported at no cost for the
foreseeable future and has over 50 members (those that have signed
up and not left the group). Interestingly, not many people leave
the group, which may be due to low traffic, or maybe that they just
want to have any possible avenue of communication about a sport they
love.
Those who have been around a while will remember the great work that
Rich Kulawiec did for all of us for many years with result
consolidation, error correction, stats, schedules, web site, etc.
All that took much more time than most people can imagine, and
eventually it was not sustainable.
The Whitewaterslalom.us site looks great and will hopefully be
wildly successful, keep Joel busy and make him a fortune ;~).
Seriously though, sometimes the "best" technology doesn't win in
the long run ... if you doubt this ... look at the success of all
the inferior technologies of the past and present, VCR vs. BetaMax,
Intel vs. Motorola, Microsoft vs. Apple, Unix and almost anyone
else ...
Ultimately our best success in communication / website will be
achieved by collaboration, and building on what others have done in
the past, instead of re-inventing the wheel. Even the greatest
slalom paddler in the world will be an underachiever when they lay
their C2 run down ... alone. If you are a techie, interested in
collaboration, tell the forum ... maybe someone will want to work
with you ... or maybe all of you can work together !
cheers,

Thanks again for the prompt update. One thing: the webpage is posting the

to check the page in a number of browsers (at least with Mozilla, which I
use and which I think is getting much more popular).
Keep it up!

The BCE has at least one tutorial on their site
http://www.bce-racing.com/
One tip - in my experience - the single thing most paddlers miss for
kayak forward (resistance) technique is driving force laterally along
the paddle shaft. Push/pull is ineffective unless the force is
translated into the water. This means pushing sideways down the shaft
to the power blade AND some crossover of the centerline is desirable.
The rest more/less takes care of itself if you have any torso twist
at all.
Slalomists also need to work their feet - pressing foot on same side
of boat as stroke.

Subject: [Slalom] Re: Training site frozen over in the winter? Take it to
the slopes to crosstrain
Its great to do winter training as a cross-training activity. Its
also possible to train through the winter on the water. The year I
lived in France I was able to ski and paddle(without pogies!) the
same day. It was fantastic! I think I logged 40 days of crosscountry
skiing that winter. I spent many years going to South America in the
winter but I also spent six years in Connecticut in the winter
training outside everyday, on the water, and in below zero
conditions some. It was pretty brutal at times but we accomplished a
lot and achieved very high goals. One year we had to borrow an ice
saw and hand cut a channel to paddle in! Talk about cross-training.
We wanted to do it. It wasn't something we had to do. If it was, we
may not have done it. It all takes planning and dedication and sure
some sacrifice but its still fun in the end to see what you can
accomplish,...........no matter what.
Its really amazing what the US slalom paddlers have done over
the past 30 years or so considering our hindrances and what options
other contries have had, mainly full funding and not just at the
highest levels. Most years you were lucky to get a uniform that was
red, white , and blue. It was all on your own. We found a way to
break down the door and used positive thinking and bullish pride.
And you know what...it worked and it still can. Sitting around and
waiting for the organization to help you doesn't work. You have to
think locally and help yourselves. Good luck. I can tell you it is
hard and can be brutally personal and sad at times but if you want
to get to your goal, you can. And you can still have fun doing it.
This note is not meant to be a "this is what I did" thing but a
reminder that you have to be creative sometimes to reach your goals.

Two main things to remember with the C1 roll.
1. extend the reach of your sweep as far as possible
AWAY from the boat.
2. When your as far out as possible pull hard with the
lower knee to flip your hips.
if you do that right you will 'fall' UP!
:-)

Corey,
Do you have a K-1 roll? Do you paddle on the right or the left? If you have a
K-1 roll, I can tell you how to do it or maybe meet you at SM roll practice one
night. Its the same basic concept..... i.e. a hip snap that jerks the boat back
under you with the paddle preventing the upper torso from rotating. Start with
the top hand in your belly button, Back of your hand on the spray skirt and
paddle blade flat on the front deck, body leaning forward over the front deck.
Keeping the paddle blade parallel with the surface of the water and your top
hand against your body, rotate and roll your body to the side with your head as
close to the top of the water as you can get it. I try to keep my face buried
in the elbow of my lower hand as this happens. Doing so does two things. It
protects your face from rocks and it helps keep your body in a compact position
for the hip snap. Once you are rotated 90 degrees with the paddle blade on the
surface of the water, hip snap and PRESTO! you are back up...... Yes it is
always that easy and simple.... no practice required.
This is a technique I thought myself from listening to other folks and watching
a few. I know it works, but others may suggest variants. It is based on the
same principles as the kayak C to C roll technique. You can use a screw roll
variant as well. They physics is all the same. If you have a K-1 roll, it
may be easiest to start with the same basic principle that you already know and
modify it to work on the C-!.
One Question..... Why do you like PAIN!? Actually, C-1 is great fun and I
really like the feel of it and the manauverability, but there are times there is
just no substitute for a second blade...... creeking and technical class V
IMHO.

A USA Whitewater Slalom meeting is scheduled for Friday, November 12
in Colorado Springs, CO at the USOC Olympic Training Center the day
before the weekend USA Canoe Kayak Board meeting.
Here are the various "agenda" items sent out via email below:

even by recent standards. Most of the budget will again be
determined by USOC performance funding. However, we asked for
funding needed to make a four year commitment for two full time
slalom coaches. We are reasonably confident that at least this part
of our request will be granted. SO we need to start planning for two
coaches.

Subject: Re: The 'Meritorious Service' Award
Chuck Hines to John Seeley. Thanks to you and others for posting
the agenda of the USAWS Business and Planning Meetings on the
USACK web-site. I hope y'all have a good meeting in CO Springs...
John, I would like to see USAWS revive the 'Meritorious Service'
award - this was an award presented to those whose volunteer work
over a period of Years helped further the sport (slalom racing). I
be-
lieve it was presented from the late '70s thru the late '90s, and,
dur-
ing this 20-year period, 55 persons were recognized. I have the list
in my possession.
The award itself was a small 20" canoe paddle with an engraved
plate. Nothing fancy. But it meant a lot to me to receive it in
1996.
Perhaps if USAWS renewed this award and appointed an award
committee of several people, they could compile a list of maybe 15
deserving volunteers whose efforts over the past five years (2000-04)
would merit the 'Meritorious Service' award. Then the award should
be presented to 2-3 additional deserving volunteers every year in the
future ...
Our sport depends greatly on its volunteers, of which you, John,
are one, but we generally do a poor job of recognizing these people,
especially when compared to other sports. (Water polo presents as
many as 40 awards -- trophies and plaques -- every year to its best
coaches, star players and especially its most deserving volunteers,
with each section of the country receiving recognition for its
efforts).
Please give this proposal some serious consideration, and once
again may I say that I hope the meetings in CO Springs prove to be
fruitful for the furtherance of our sport. Best Wishes.

Subject: Re: Agendas for USAWS Committee Annual Meetings
I had hoped that the agenda for the upcoming meeting might generate
some comments and discussion prior to the meeting. Since our time is
going to be limited in Colorado Springs, we need to be prepared ahead
of time to be effective. Hence, I am going to ask a few questions to
get a discussion started.
1) The Chair and Treasurer positions are up for election this year.
I expect that Bill Constable and Matt Taylor will be nominated for
treasurer. As in the past, I am willing to continue in the role of
Chair, but would be happy to pass on the position to a qualified
candidate. Any discussion?
2) Any thoughts on the proposal to do away with or revise the
regional qualifier system? Is what we have good, bad, or
indifferent? How can we improve it?
3) How much effort should we invest in reinstituting a rankings
system?
4) How effective is the JO program, and what can we do to improve it?
5) Any other suggestions?
I am out of touch until Sunday eve (Stockholm ICF congress), but hope
you will start commenting on these issues prior to that time.

Subject: USAWS Committee Annual Meetings -- Accommodations
Copied below is information on accommodations provided recently by
David Yarborough to members of the USACK Board of Directors (so some
of you already will have this information – my apologies for the
repeat). The meeting will be in downtown Colorado Springs at the
Olympic Training Center, 1 Olympic Plaza.
For those of you flying into the Colorado Springs airport, I am told
it is a 7 mile taxi ride to downtown, but I don't have a fare
estimate. I also don't know if there is a parking charge at the
OTC,
for those with cars. Parking at the Antlers Hotel is $7/day, if you
park it yourself.
As I indicated previously, there always is a lot of business to
conduct at these meetings. Please plan to arrive Thursday night so
that we can get an early start Friday morning (we cannot start the
meeting until a quorum is present), and be prepared to go into Friday
evening if we cannot finish our business earlier.
I also will circulate an agenda once one has been prepared and
approved by Mike.
Thanks for your attention.
David Yarborough's Message to the USACK Board follows:
Thanks to all who have responded to confirm your attendance. For
those of you from whom we haven't yet heard, please remember that
next Tuesday, October 12 is the deadline for us to confirm space at
the Olympic training center. We need to hear form everyone by next
Monday.
A number of you have expressed a desire to stay outside the Spartan
confines of the OTC. I recommend the Antlers Hotel (719-473-5600) for
anyone who prefers this environment. It is a very nice hotel and is
located reasonably close to the USOC. We can probably arrange
transportation from there if there are several people who are willing
to ride together. The room rate should be under $100.
For those who stay outside the OTC, there will be a charge of $25 per
day to attend the meetings and eat meals in the OTC dining room or $5
per day to access the center for our meetings, but not take any meals.
For those who will be attending committee meetings on Friday, we can
now offer rooms for the evening of Thursday 11/11 if you need to
arrive the day before. When making your travel plans, please bear in
mind that the OTC check-in time is 2:00PM. The check out is at
9:00AM.
Also, we have been advised that there will be no single rooms
available. We will be responsible for our own rooming assignments so
please indicate any preferences you have for whom you stay with.
We will have lots of important work to get done and it looks as if we
will have a very good turnout.
