Jamie,
I don't think that Joel's great work makes this group
(sports.groups.yahoo.com) obsolete, but the group is what the
members want and make of it.
The wwslalom forum is supported by Yahoo (advertising pays the
bills, groan), is likely to be supported at no cost for the
foreseeable future and has over 50 members (those that have signed
up and not left the group). Interestingly, not many people leave
the group, which may be due to low traffic, or maybe that they just
want to have any possible avenue of communication about a sport they
love.
Those who have been around a while will remember the great work that
Rich Kulawiec did for all of us for many years with result
consolidation, error correction, stats, schedules, web site, etc.
All that took much more time than most people can imagine, and
eventually it was not sustainable.
The Whitewaterslalom.us site looks great and will hopefully be
wildly successful, keep Joel busy and make him a fortune ;~).
Seriously though, sometimes the "best" technology doesn't win in
the long run ... if you doubt this ... look at the success of all
the inferior technologies of the past and present, VCR vs. BetaMax,
Intel vs. Motorola, Microsoft vs. Apple, Unix and almost anyone
else ...
Ultimately our best success in communication / website will be
achieved by collaboration, and building on what others have done in
the past, instead of re-inventing the wheel. Even the greatest
slalom paddler in the world will be an underachiever when they lay
their C2 run down ... alone. If you are a techie, interested in
collaboration, tell the forum ... maybe someone will want to work
with you ... or maybe all of you can work together !
cheers,
..ajm
Racers - Want to keep slalom strong in the U.S. ? Next time you go
to a race, talk to some of the volunteers, ones you may recognize or
not, and thank them for all the work they do to make your racing
possible.
