She was out for some fun, sun and
boogie-boarding. She got the fright of her life.<br><br>LaKeysia
Beene, a Gold River, Calif., native and one of the Bay
Area CyberRays' original three allocated players, was
enjoying the waters of nearby Monterey Bay one summer day
when she encountered a Pacific electric ray swimming
alongside.<br><br>The rays, native to Northern California waters, have
a nasty reputation among surfers, scuba divers and
commercial fishermen for the powerful electric jolt they can
deliver.<br><br>Fishermen usually cut their lines as soon as they've hooked
one. Beene, a two-time all-American goalkeeper at
Notre Dame, never let the creature get that
close.<br><br>"It scared the heck out of me," she said. "I ran to
shore screaming because I was so scared."<br><br>Was
she aware of the ray's shocking
abilities?<br><br>"Not really," she said. "It was a creature that I
could just tell had a mean force. Just looking at the
thing I was completely terrified."<br><br>CyberRays.
Once she feared them. Now she's joined them.

At least two high-profile college coaches will be
coaching in the WUSA next year, womenssoccer.com has
learned. <br>Notre Dame's Randy Waldrum appears set to
take over the first-year coaching duties with the Bay
Area CyberRays, while Penn State's Patrick Farmer
looks to be headed to the Philadelphia Charge.
<br><br>Waldurm's Fighting Irish, coming off a national title game
appearance last year, are ranked No. 1 nationally and
undefeated in 19 games with a record of 18-0-1. At Penn
State, Framer led the Nittany Lions to the NCAA
semifinals last season, and his team is currently ranked
seventh in the NSCAA poll with a record of 18-2-1.
<br><br>Both schools are very much alive in the post-season
picture, and official announcements will most likely wait
until after the programs have completed their seasons.
<br><br>The San Diego Spirit have also reportedly settled on
a coach, tabbing Carlos Juarez, currently the head
coach at Division II power Cal Poly Pomona. Juarez,
well respected in the American coaching community, led
Pomona to the national championship game last year in
the school's first-ever NCAA tournament appearance.
He has a three-year record of 50-25-17 at the
school. Before coming to Pomona, Juarez led Cal-State
Bernardino to a 125-88-19 record. <br><br>Juarez has also
served in various coaching capacities with the United
States Soccer Federation, including a two-year stint as
the head coach of the Under-16 girl's national team.
He was also an assistant with the U.S. Under-17 boys
during the 1995 Youth World Championships, and he worked
with the Under-20 women's national team from 1988 to
1996. <br><br>In Raleigh, two candidates are emerging
as front-runners. Marcia McDermott, currently the
head coach at Northwestern University, and Patrick
Baker, head coach at Florida State. <br><br>Baker
confirmed that the league had contacted him. <br><br>"The
league is very exciting and it would be a great
opportunity to get in on the ground floor," Baker said
Thursday after his Seminoles advanced to the second round
of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament for the
first time in the program's history. "But my focus
right now is on Florida State." <br><br>McDermott, a
highly regarded coach in her seventh season at
Northwestern, is a 1987 graduate of the University of North
Carolina. Her Wildcats finished the 2000 season with a
3-12-2 record. <br><br>Three teams have already
announced their coaches. The Washington Freedom have hired
Jim Gabarra as coach, Jay Hoffman is the coach of the
Boston Breakers, and Tom Stone will coach the Atlanta
Beat.

The Bay Area entry in the Women's United Soccer
Association is negotiating to play its 2001 season at Spartan
Stadium in San Jose. <br>Spartan is the home of San Jose
State University and the San Jose Earthquakes of MLS.
<br>Spartan Stadium officials say the final agreement for the
women's professional soccer team to play at Spartan will
require a "waiver of blackout dates" by MLS, since the
Earthquakes have one year remaining on their contract at the
stadium. Both the Bay Area's WUSA team and the Earthquakes
open their seasons next spring. <br>"The WUSA as a
league, and the Bay Area team in particular, look forward
to implementing the cooperative agreement by making
Spartan Stadium the nation's professional soccer
showcase," said Marlene Bjornsrud, general manager of the
WUSA's Bay Area team. <br>The WUSA's 21-game regular
season will run from mid-April through August, and each
of the league's eight teams will play 10 or 11 home
games. Bjornsrud said she would like to schedule two to
three home games as doubleheaders with the Earthquakes.
Ideally those games would be against cities in which the
WUSA and MLS share markets: Boston, New York or
Washington. <br>"Those twin-team rivalries present great
opportunities to cross-promote both leagues and would be
exciting and attractive matchups for fans," Bjornsrud
said. <br><br>The Atlanta franchise of the WUSA
announced an agreement to play at Georgia Tech's Bobby Dodd
Stadium/Grant Field in the club's inaugural season. Terms of
the deal were not disclosed. <br>The 46,000-seat
stadium is located at the heart of the Georgia Tech
campus on Techwood Drive. The stadium is the home of
Georgia Tech football and has a grass field. <br>"Georgia
Tech's willingness to work with us, location and
reputation as a popular sporting venue were all important
factors in our selection process," said Lynn Morgan,
general manager of the Atlanta club. <br>"We're very
happy to host Atlanta's newest pro sports team," said
Dave Braine, the university's director of athletics.
"The relationship will be mutually beneficial. The
WUSA Atlanta [team] will have an excellent playing
facility, and it's an opportunity to encourage young women
in the Atlanta area to get more involved with soccer
as we move ahead with plans to start our own program

the WUSA Atlanta,” said Lynn Morgan, general manager.
<br>“I could not be more excited about the challenge of
coaching in the first women's pro soccer league,” said
Stone. “With Olympic athletes [Cindy] Parlow, [Briana]
Scurry and [Nikki] Serlenga, we’ve got a great
foundation for a winning franchise.” <br>Stone began his
soccer career in Dallas, where he was a two-time high
school All-American. He was an NCAA champion with Duke
in 1986. <br>He played for the Washington Stars and
the Colorado Foxes (A-League), winners of the 1991
and 1992 national professional championships.
<br><br>WUSA Boston named Jay Hoffman as head coach Oct. 25.
<br>He was an assistant coach for the U.S. women’s
national team in 1998-2000. <br>"The selection of Jay
Hoffman was based upon his coaching credentials, national
and international experiences and coaching style ...
very simply, he was the best candidate,’’ said WUSA
Boston general manager Joe Cummings. <br>Hoffman has
been involved with the U.S. Soccer Federation since
1977, starting as a national instructional staff coach.
He has been a national staff coach since 1992 for
Region 1. <br>Prior to working with the U.S. women’s
teams, Hoffman was the head coach for the U.S. men’s
U-20 national team from 1994-1997. He was also an
assistant with the men’s U-17 national team in 1993 and
1997. <br>"I am looking forward to this great
opportunity in New England where the soccer community has
always shown great support for the women,’’ said
Hoffman, who presently resides in Chagrin Falls, Ohio with
his wife and two children. "New England has been like
a second home to our National team. The area is
very supportive and it’s exciting to be involved in a
franchise that is extremely enthusiastic about the WUSA.’’
<br>Hoffman’s coaching experience includes a head position at
Alderson-Broaddus College and Fredonia State. He also was an
assistant coach in the North American Soccer League
(Houston, Edmonton) and the Major Indoor Soccer League (New
Jersey, Cleveland, Buffalo).

WUSA allocated 19 of its 20 founding players, who
won the World Cup for the United States last summer,
plus five U.S. pool players to its eight teams. The
league hopes to start play next spring. <br><br>Carla
Overbeck won't play in the league's first season because

Notre Dame in last year's College Cup semifinals.
Mullinix has become the U.S. national team starter while
Briana Scurry (Atlanta) recovers from shin splints. Like
Serlenga, French, a former Portland star, is in the running
