KANSAS CITY, MO – The U.S. Women's National Team surrendered a goal
11 seconds into tonight's match and played an up hill battle from
there, tying Italy 2-2 on Wednesday night in Arrowhead Stadium.
Italy's Patrizia Panico split Joy Fawcett and Kate Sobrero to find
Ilaria Pasqui just after 11 seconds ticked off the clock. The U.S.
equalized before the half after an Italy own goal. Julie Foudy played
the ball into the box to Abby Wambach, who chested the ball into the
air. Italy captain Manuela Tesse then toed the ball away from
Wambach, but over her own goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
The U.S. took a 2-1 in the second half when Shannon MacMillan drove a
free kick through the Italian wall and between the goalkeeper and the
near post. Italy later equalized when Moira Placchi put a well placed
volley past Siri Mullinix off a header from Pasqui.
