I hope everyone has had a great summer and the first week of classes has gone well. For those of you who don't know me, I am Chelsea Roberts, this year's President. Those of you that are receiving this email because you have expressed interest in Club Tennis over the summer and within the past week, I would like to inform you that Club Tennis is a fun and competitive way to play tennis and meet lots of people. We have two hour practices, three times a week. Practices are held on Monday and Thursday evenings at Dwight Davis which is in Forest Park, and Sunday afternoons on WashU courts. We will be traveling to Kansas and Wisconsin this semester for large invitationals, as well as hopefully other locations for matches. Last year, we went to Sectionals in Oklahoma and made it to Nationals in North Carolina! We are hoping to have a successful year, and we're always looking to add more people to our team.
As for the rest of the team- welcome back to tennis guys!
We will be starting practice this week on THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 4TH at Dwight Davis. Our practice slot is 6-8. We are expecting to have a lot of people come out, so we may need to use multiple forms of transportation. We will be meeting at the South 40 Clocktower at 5:40 to get organized and start trying to get to Dwight Davis. If you have a CAR please email me back. It would be awesome if you can help carpool those who don't. If you have a BIKE, we will be leading a bike group from the Clocktower. If you're up for the WALK (which is about 20 minutes), we will also be leading a walking group if we need it.
Here are the official results from Nationals: take a lot if you feel so
inclined. Wash U was in pool K, then went to the Bronze Division.

Hey all,
I hope, for you undergrads, that your summers are getting off to a good
start, and for you seniors, that you're cherishing the last few days
with you classmates. At the end of the season meeting, we voted on some
changes to the Club constitution, which is the document that defines in
part how we run our Club. I have made the changes, and I have attached
the revised constitution so that you can read it over if you are
interested. Any comments or suggestions on the wording would be
welcome. If there are any lines that you have issue with, please email
Chelsea your suggestion at chelsea.roberts@..., so that she can
put it to a vote at the beginning of next season.
The major changes were: addition of the positions of Secretary and Match
Play Coordinator, the removal of Women's Chair, and the addition of the
rule that all three primary officers cannot be seniors. I have noted
any changes in yellow highlighter. Enjoy!

really enjoyed my 4 years playing tennis at Wash U. Good luck with the
rest of your finals!

The Artist Formerly Known as Club Tennis President
The Pizza Picnic Wednesday has been moved back tomorrow to 12pm. Meet
at the entrance to Holmes Lounge that opens out onto the Quad.
Anyone who has uniforms from Nationals, make sure to wash those
(read the instructions on the tags) and bring them to the meeting.
Also, we will discuss the possibility of having a Ladder Coordinator
position, whose job would be to keep the ladder updated, and think of
better ways to implement the ladder, so if that position sounds
interesting to you, let me know by email or at the meeting.
Oh yes oh yes it's that time of the year again-- weather is beautiful,
people are scrambling to study for finals and finish projects
and...it's time for the Club Tennis end-of-the-season pizza meeting!
So, this Wednesday, April 30, from 11:30am -12:30pm, we will
meet in the Quad, at the front entrace to Holme's Lounge and
have a pizza picnic in the hopefully nice weather. At the meeting, we
will elect officers for next year, discuss how the past year went, hang
out with other club tennis players, and eat pizza! If you want to
run for an officer position for next semester, vote for new officers,
offer a comment or suggestion about how club tennis is run, or just
hang out, come to the meeting and let your voice be heard!
Here's a list of the Club Tennis officer positions and their duties, in
case your are interested in running for a position:
President: over-sees everything
Vice-president: works in close conjunction with the president on
over-seeing and planning
Treasurer: Manages the money, collects dues, reimburses members from
Club budget
Webmaster: updates the website and ladder, posts match results, manages
Yahoo! group and Facebook group
Secretary: organizes club files, club photos, history of match results
Match Play Coordinators (around 3): plan the travel, lodging, and
logistics of a match. serve as liason between the two teams who will be
playing; also contact teams to set up matches when we don't already
have matches scheduled
SCF Rep: goes to Sports Club Federation meetings once a month,
represents our club at the meetings and reports on the proceedings to
the president
If you are interested in running for a position, please email me
before the meeting so that I can make up a list of who is running
beforehand. Also, if you want to run for a position or give an
idea but you can't make the meeting, email me to let me know or to tell
me your idea. Sorry for the late notice about the meeting, but I hope
you all will be able to attend!
Last but not least, the last official practice of the semester will be
this Sunday, April 27 at the Wash U courts, from 1-3pm. I
unfortunately cannot attend, but I hope you all get out and play some
tennis before taking those finals.
Just a quick word to let you know that we will be having an informal
practice tonight, Thursday April 24 and Sunday, April 27. Coach Don
Emmanuel or Gene Cherng will be there with balls. Sunday will be our
last practice of the semester. We will have an end-of-the season team
pizza meeting during reading week, I will let you know as soon as we
decide the date for that.
Enjoy the weather,
Brian
We arrived back at Cary Tennis Park bright and early Friday morning,
with a fresh start in the Bronze Bracket. We started off facing
Western Washington University, and lost, although we took the mix
doubles and forced some overtime games on them. We lost a close match
to Portland State, then, stuck in the backwoods of the bracket, lost
to a good Georgetown Team. Today, Saturday, motivated to play well in
our last match, smoked James Madison University for a nice end to the
tournament. It's been a great bunch of matches, and we've played some
quality teams. We're now off in search of the legendary Carolina
barbeque! Thanks for tuning in,
Brian Blosser
Guys, remember to light a fire under Stu...and you'll definitely return home with some enviable "hardware"!!!
Buena suerte!

Hey guys, Just wanted to let you know how we're doing in Cary, NC. Today was pool play, every team was in a pool with four other teams. We lost a fairly close match to Miami of Ohio, then we lost to a very good University of Georgia team, 9-30. After that, we handled Drexel University 30-13. With these results, we took third in the pool, and will play in the Bronze Bracket tomorrow morning. The weather in Cary is beautiful and sunny, around 80 degrees. Hope you all are doing well, will send another update tomorrow.

Brian asked me to tell y'all that barring inclement weather, practice
is still on this Thursday, same Bat-time, same Bat-channel (yes, I'm
old). I will be there with a hopper and Don should be there too.
Good luck to the Nationals team!
We will have practice as usual tonight from 7-9pm at the Tao courts.
The SLU president informed me that he has let his players know that
they can come and play against us if they want, but I imagine they
won't have that many players that come.
Also, in preparation for Nationals, I'm proposing that we meet Tuesday
at 8pm at the Tao courts to get some more practice in before the
tournament. This practice would be "unofficial", meaning that we
would get courts on a first come, first serve basis like everyone
else. Anyone on the team is welcome to come Tuesday night as well,
you don't have to be going to Nationals.
For those of you who are going to Nationals, please try to get out and
play as much as possible before this Wednesday. Even if you can't
make Tuesday night, try to get out sometime. Also, FYI, the Tao
courts will be booked from 3pm-8pm Tuesday for Varsity practices and
matches, so try to get your play in before that if you can. Also keep
in mind that Flynn Park, just west of campus on Pershing, is always a
viable option for courts.
Thanks for reading,
Brian Blosser
I'm canceling the match today due to weather. The temperature is
hovering around 40 degrees, there is going to be drizzle/snow on and off
today, and the courts are pretty wet. Sorry it didn't work out today,
but I am going to invite SLU to come back tomorrow at 7pm, during
practice. We'll see if they'll be able to make it.
Also, for those going to Nationals and anyone who is interested, we'll
probably try to put together an informal practice session together Tues.
from 7-9 pm if Varsity has practice, maybe earlier otherwise.
I'll be in touch,
Brian Blosser
Upcoming Club Tennis Events:
1. Club Tennis Party: Saturday, April 12 @ 10pm, Stu's Apartment
An informal party to have a good time with your fellow Club Tennis
brothers/sisters in arms. You guys should have already gotten a Facebook
invitation, but if not, here's the address again.

Apartment F
(3 buildings down from Kayak's on Pershing)
2. Match Against SLU: Sunday, April 13 from 1-3pm, Tao Tennis Center (Wash U)
SLU will be sending a team over here during our normal practice time to have a
match. Everyone is welcome to the match, there should be more than enough match
opportunities for everyone, and for those going to Nationals this will be good
preparation. Remember, SLU narrowly took us out of Sectionals, so we're gonna
get them back here!
Hope to see you on Saturday or Sunday,
Brian Blosser
Hello all, Its me again, your secretary. I just wanted to send out
another email about NJTL in University City. Its a program where kids
at the local grade school (from 1st grade to 5th or 6th grade) come
out after school on Monday and Wednesday (3:45-5 PM) to play/learn how
to play tennis. Its a great program run by our very own Don Emmanuel.
Last week Gene and I attended and had a great time, but we need more
volunteers, at least 2 per day (ie 2 on Monday and 2 on Wednesday) you
don't need to go both days, and you don't need to go every week, we
just need two people each day.
We play games with the kids and do a limited amount of drilling, and
if you arent into the whole 'volunteering' thing and are more of a
capitalist, there will be a $10 stipend per day, so you can earn some
money too. I will be going most Wednesdays and hopefully Mondays as
well, so if you need a ride just let me know.
To recap,
1) We need two volunteers each Monday and Wednesday
2) You can earn $10 per day, or just volunteer your time
3) We have an awesome time out there
4) As Don says, if you need an ego boost, these kids worship us
college kids, which is always a good feeling.
Let me know if you are interested and can go. Please help out the
local community, its fun and rewarding.
Sincerely,
Stuart
Hey all,
I wanted to draw your attention back to our Club Ladder, now that the
weather is nicer and we're back to 3 practices a week. The idea behind
the ladder is we want a fair way to rank our players, so that we can
best decide who goes to matches and who plays in what spot. The ladder
is also an awesome way to play some competitive matches within our own
club.
Click here to access the Ladder page on the club website:
http://sugroups.wustl.edu/~wutennis/ladder.html
I have updated the ladder, taking off any players who have not
participated this semester. The rules are on the same page, so read up
on those as well.
According to the rules, you can challenge a player up to three spots
ahead of you. The challenge can be made at practice, or through email
or phone.
Make sure that you put your contact info on the team contact list,
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/wuclubtennis/database?method=reportRows&tbl\
=1
,so that people can get a hold of you to set up matches.
Lastly, make sure you report the scores of any challenge matches in the
database at this link, so that the ladder can be updated:
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/wuclubtennis/database?method=reportRows&tbl\
=1
Thanks for reading, and let's get the ladder going!
Brian Blosser
Well, you probably guessed it, but tonight's practice is canceled due to
rain. Our next official practice will be Thursday at 7pm, and we may
try to organize an unofficial practice Tuesday or Wednesday, I'll keep
you posted.
Thank you to those who expressed interest in going to Nationals by
sending me an email. We'd like to take all of you, but we only have the
money to take 8 people, and we have to buy our plane tickets for
tomorrow, so there was no time for tryouts. The club tennis officers
met last Sunday, and based on seniority, commitment to the team, and
previously demonstrated skill, we decided on this roster for Nationals:
Brian Blosser
Jeff Gole
Stewart Webb
Doug Disabato
Vicky Crago
Grace Fox
Chelsea Roberts
Becky Fifer
Again, sorry if you are not on the roster, we tried to be as fair as
possible. If you have a specific question as far as our decisions,
please send me an email.
Remember also that we hope to have two more matches besides Nationals
before the semester is over, I will give out details as the plans are
firmed up.
Enjoy the rest of your Monday!
Brian Blosser
Hello all,
Bummer about the rain today, but hopefully we will be able to get out and hit
tomorrow.
Anyway, Don Emmanuel has recruited me to organize any volunteers for the
National Junior
Tennis League(?) (NJTL) program in University City. It begins this Wednesday at
3.45 at Flynn
Park and runs until about 5. The program runs twice a week from this week
forward, and you
can either choose to be a volunteer, or receive a stipend (approximately
$10/hour). This is
an opportunity to give back to the community and have some fun at the same time.
Please
let me know if you are interested in this opportunity as soon as possible.
Sincerely,
Stuart
Hello Club Tennis:
First of all, hope to see you all today from 1-3pm at Tao Tennis Center
for regular practice. Sorry for the tardiness of this email, and some
of you already know this, but the Wash U Club got a wild card bid to
Nationals! Yes, it's awesome, but we need to buy plane tickets ASAP, so
I need to know who would be able to go to Nationals. It's April 17-19
in Cary, North Carolina. We would fly out the evening of Wednesday the
16, and fly back to St. Louis the evening of Saturday the 19. We will
be deciding who gets to go based on a number of factors, including
seniority, commitment to the team, and skill, as measured by past
results, since we have so little time. If you want to go, respond ASAP,
as we do need to decide who is going and buy those tickets soon.
Best,
Brian Blosser
It's snowing! But unfortunately that means no practice today. Hope
you all had a good weekend, and hopefully we will be able to get some
practices in this week.
~Vicky
Hey,
Just a reminder that we will be having outdoor practice tonight, Mon.
March 17 (St. Patty's Day), from 7-9pm at Tao Tennis Center (Wash U
Courts) if it is not raining. If it's raining, I'll send out a formal
cancellation email a couple of hours before the practice.
May the road rise to meet you...
Brian Blosser
Hello Clubbers,
Hope your Spring Breaks are going well. Here's a little email telling
about what's going on when you get back to school...
1. Outdoor Practice: Our outdoor practices will resume starting Monday,
March 17. We will switch back to three practices a week, with a
schedule of Monday 7-9pm, Thursday 7-9pm, and Sunday 1-3pm. Practices
are open to all club members and are held at Tao Tennis Center (the Wash
U courts in front of the A/C).
2. Potential matches: We are trying to organize a tournament with
Wichita State and SLU sometime at the end of March or beginning of
April, hopefully hosted at Wash U. Also, Dan Bratetic from USTA
Missouri Valley is trying to organize a 1-day round robin tournament in
Kansas City Saturday April 26. I will give more details to these
matches as they become available.
3. Sectionals website: Click on this link for the USTA story of
Sectionals and a (fairly cheesy) video with some footage from the
tourney.
http://www.missourivalley.usta.com/news/fullstory.sps?inewsid=522521&iNewsCat=%3\
CCAT%3E
4. Nationals? We're still waiting to here if we got a wild card bid to
Nationals in Cary Park, NC. I will let you know as soon as they tell us
if we are in or not.
5. Uniforms and Gas Receipts: Everyone who had a uniform at Sectionals,
be sure to wash it and return it to me at one of the next practices.
Also, anyone who paid for gas driving to Sectionals, make sure you get
your receipts to Chelsea to get reimbursed.
6. The mens' and womens' varsity tennis teams are having a Special
Olympics Tennis Clinic from 10am-12pm on Saturday, March 22. Mens'
Coach Roger Follmer is looking for volunteers to help out during the
event, and this is a good opportunity to provide an enjoyable afternoon
of tennis and games for all the participants. Volunteers would need to
arrive at 9:30 am and would receive a long-sleeve t-shirt and a pizza
lunch at 12:15. Email Coach Follmer at follmer@... and
tell him that you are on the Club Tennis Team and that you want to
volunteer if you are interested.
Thanks for reading the long email, and I hope you are all excited about
getting back into practice after Spring Break!
Brian Blosser
Hey Club Tennis,
Hope you all had good weekends.
1. Here's a recap of the Sectional Tournament this weekend:
We sent down 2 teams to Norman, Oklahoma to participate in the
Sectional Championships with teams from Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas,
Iowa, and Oklahoma. In pool play on Saturday, Wash U A took down SLU B
and Wichita State, and lost a fairly close match to Iowa State A,
putting us in 2nd place in our pool, and 3rd seed overall for the
champions bracket. Since it was supposed to rain on Sunday, they made
us play our first match of the champions bracket Saturday evening. We
had the bad luck to have to face SLU A first round, and we played a
really good, close match, but ended up losing by 3 games, 24-21.
It was a heartbreaker, since it meant we were out of contention for
1rst, 2nd, or 3rd place, but it was a well-played match on both sides,
and SLU's mixed doubles team really played well. Our second team, WU2,
was in a tough pool with the eventual champion, University of Oklahoma,
but they played some close matches. On Sunday, Wash U A lost two more
close matches to Iowa State B and Oklahoma State, and WU2 lost a close
one to Wichita State. Overall, everyone had a good time, and though
we didn't clinch a birth to Nationals, we still have the possibility of
getting a wild card bid. They haven't yet posted anything on the
USTA website, but I'll let you know as soon as that comes out.
2. Due to continuing cold/rainy weather, we will not start outdoor
practice this week, but we will start Monday, March 18, the week we
get back from Spring Break. Practices will be outside on the WashU
courts, and will take place 1-3pm Sunday, and Monday and Thursday
evenings, most likely 7-9pm, but this will depend on the varsity
practice times.
3. Our next match will most likely be hosted by us here at Wash U,
against SLU, Wichita State, and Missouri S and T (formerly Rolla). It
will probably take place late March, so stay tuned for more information
on that.
Thanks to everyone who participated in Sectionals this weekend, you all
made a great contribution to the team. I know we all really want to
get back out to play and get a lot better, so keep that desire strong.
Wishing everyone a good week,
Brian Blosser
Hello Club Tennis,
Here's the roster for this Sunday's practice. 16 of the following 18
people will be going to Sectionals, so I assume that everyone on this
list is committed to go. If you can't commit to go, please let me know
immediately. We will meet at the Clocktower @6:30pm, as usual.
It's hard to believe, but Sectionals is next weekend, February 29 and
March 1 and 2 in Norman, OK, near Oklahoma City. Here are some rough
details: it's a 7.5 hr drive per Mapquest estimation, so we would
probably leave by 4pm on Friday at the latest, and we would probably
have at least one car leave earlier, around 1pm. We will play 4 matches
Saturday, and 2 matches on Sunday. The estimated finish time Sunday is
4:30pm, so you could expect to be back at Wash U around 12pm. However,
the long drive would allow for lots of homework time, so getting your
work done would not be a problem.
More details to come, here is the roster for this Sunday:
Brian Blosser
Jeff Gole
Eric Waetjen
Doug Disabato
Meryl Guyer
Stephanie Paul
Grace Fox
Vicky Crago
Chelsea Roberts
Becky Fifer
Kacie Seil
Stuart Webb
Daniel Gettinger
Andy Harding
Zach Saajasto
Andy Baskin
Ian Ross
Zach Amittay
Following is the roster for the upcoming practice. Meet at the
Clocktower at 6:30pm. Let me know ASAP if you are on the list but can't
make it.
We have two indoor practices left before Sectionals, which means that we
will be concentrating on forming our teams for Sectionals. Therefore,
if you really want to go, make sure you come to these practices so that
we can get some match results for you. Additionally, coming to practice
shows some level of your commitment Traditional drivers, meet with
your cars at the Clocktower as usual. Grace, you don't need to drive.

Kelly Stalhuth, the women's varsity coach, has just let me know that
she would love to have two club players fill in on their doubles
matches at Creve Coeur Racquet Club during the following times. If
this interests you, send me back an email, and I will decide who gets
to go by some kind of first to respond/who I like (just kidding)/who I
think could use the experience kind of decision-making process. Be
sure to specify what day you want to play.

Hello everyone,
1. For all of you who don't know, Wash U Club drove down to
Indianapolis, Indiana for a head to head match against the Butler
University Bulldogs (Vice President, my brother, Michael). It was a
chilly, -20 windshield day, but we got to play in their tennis bubble,
which was (albeit not much) warmer. We came out with a 4-3 overall
match victory, with wins by Jeff Gole at Men's Singles, Brian Blosser
and Doug Disabato at Men's Doubles, Grace Fox and Stu Webb at Mixed
Doubles, and Andy Baskin at another Men's Singles. Even the matches
we lost were very close, so I think the match was an overall success
and a good time was had by all.
2. Sunday indoor practice starts back up this Sunday from 7-9pm (meet
at the Clocktower at 6:30pm). Same drill, I will be sending out the
potential practice roster on Friday. We only have two more indoor
practices left before Sectionals, so the remaining practices will
concentrate on team pairings for Sectionals as well as contribute to
the final decision of who gets to go.
3. As a reminder, the USTA Sectionals tournament will take place
Saturday and Sunday March 1 and 2, in Norman, Oklahoma. We will leave
Friday evening and return Sunday evening. Get excited, and make sure
that you don't have any conflicts you forgot about...
4. We are still missing uniforms (not including people who have
uniforms from Butler). We are missing a small women's shirt and
skirt, and a medium men's pant. Please, if you ever used a team
uniform, double check to make sure that you don't still have anything.
These uniforms are brand new, and we want them to be intact and in
good condition for next year's team!
5. Lastly, we will be starting outdoor practice the week of March 3,
right after we get back from Sectionals. Practices will again be
Sunday 1-3pm for sure, and Monday and Thursday evenings at a to be
determined time, probably around 7pm.
Thanks for reading, and I'll see you on the courts...
