We had a lot of damage locally from last weeks storm but I think the Outer Banks
has us beat. A friend of mine down there took these pictures during the storm
and after.

For all of you interested in going to Morro Negrito in Panama Feb 6-13, 2010, it's time to get your applications submitted for the camp. This is the camp that Bob Moe raves about and I negotiated a great deal for us to attend. An application is on this site in the files section.

I have been working with all people with special needs for years and let me tell you all this, the feeling of joy you get is like nothing you ever experienced before, I have worked with vets that lost limbs, 1000s of kids from Autism to CP to blind and deaf as well as older people with all the same handicaps.
This summer I got a man who was blind from birth(36 Y/O) and got him up and ridding waves, okay so one wave but the fact remains the same, when you can help someone to experience what we experience daily it just makes what we do(surfing) so  worth while.Today with all the crap surrounding us all, giving back seems to make life worth living.
To all of you that do the same you understand and trust me, there are so many of us doing this and the people we help remember that wave just like we do when we catch that wave that we think about when we are laying in bed and dozing off.
When ever you can help some one, remember it could be you that needs that help...

Inspiring.  There was some folks in central Cal (Pismo Beach) who were helping disabled veterans to find their STOKE a few years ago.  Their smiles are still with me.  Thank you for sharing.

Did not call my direction, when I saw my friend, Danly "the dingman" Attwood, paddling also. I figured I would just follow under and behind him so we could get a fun slide. I cranked a top left and Danly sloped into a bottom turn right. When our eyes met, there was no hesitation and the cross over was performed. We both had new boards and there was not a click between us. A maneuver that will be remembered for a long time. Tuesday was ~8' and we made two sessions out of this opportunity. Wednesday was in the 3' range and some great play-day waves. Just looked at the cam and forecast for today and it is 26' @ 17 seconds. There is white water for as far as one can see.

Swell is working very good today with 8-10 foot sets. very clean this morning and just having some breakfast before I head back out, Wildo should be the spot but if it is off I am heading to school yards of bridges..raining and a bit bummed because the water there is dirty from run off.....
Oh well it still is 80 deg and water is 80 as well, I could be back in NY and a full wetsuit so I will smile and enjoy the waves.......

Snake,
I didn't get down until late morning to 47th. .   I drove down in the morning to take care of some things at the condo. Went to 47th.since I had to stop by BB& T . then did the chores  and back down by the Castle on the way out of town.  It appeared the there were some bigger sets coming in after high tide. BWD got some great rides while I was there and a fisherman landed a 36" Striped Bass.  Had a great day.  Wish I had gotten up with your crew too.    Sam

Was out at 36th st today. Waves were clean and fun but the bottoms mushed out as the tide came in. If I had known you were at 47th I would have driven up.

If a fellow brother can give advise, here is some.  The experience comes from some "old guy warranty work".  Had the elbow rotater cup removed and ulnar nerve moved.  Do: steady improvement of excercise and keep a smile.  Do Not: get ahead of yourself as that will knock off the smile.  We do not have too many fall downs left.  We will wait for you to come back in the line-up.

Hey Guys,
Down in OC Maryland to day with SW breeze and chest to head high NE swell.  Three out at 47th. st. and one, Big Wave Dave, at 38. Beautiful day. There were two other guys loading up there car at 36th. Much better than the summer crowds.   My shoulder is still recovering from surgery but enjoyed the view.    Bob, I will be one of the folks hitting the snow after Thanksgiving.  Except mabe a few good days during the week after I get the all clear from the surgeon in January.      Sam

John,

The line-up has been ~20 and your words are also being said here.  When there are more than 8 in the water it starts to get crowded.  Most of the time there is a peek 200 yards to the north and if you figure out how many rides you would get in the pack, you did better going north.  Hoping for lot's of snow, so the snow boarders will flock to the tall peeks.   The other part of the winter cold is these folks want to be in a colder place and that is good for me.

I receiveived this from both Linda Benson and Bob Feigel

Greetings,

I'm normally not that keen about online petitions, but this one has my support.
Linda Benson is working hard to bring the Women's World Longboard Championship
back from France and hold the next world contest at Swamis.

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/86/support-the-womens-world-longboard-championshi\
ps-at-swamis

She has had to start an online petition supporting the contest in answer to
another online petition opposing the use of Swamis as the site and - in my
opinion - their reasons are more about localism and anti-competition than
anything else.

Here are the links to other petition so you can judge for yourselves.

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/stop-surfing-contests-at-swamis

All the best,

Bob

My submission:

As someone who surfed Swamis back in the 50's & 60's and knows the area well, I
support the proposed contest and wish the organizers every success.

Why?

1. Because it's being organized by people I trust, and I can't think of anyone
who would take greater care ensuring that the contest respects both the spirit
and traditional values of Swamis and its environment.

2. Because Swamis can produce a world class wave for a world class contest and I
don't think Cardiff has that potential.

3. I also think that opposition to the contest is reactionary and is more about
localism and anti-competition than anything substantive or valid.

Bring on a strong winter swell ...

 That will never happen!!

I earned my ''lil snake'' title, by out-swooping the master,(campo lopez,1972). And since you taught me the"secret technique'' , back then,I have expanded my skills to (maybe almost but never equel to the master) I will always kiss the girls, and my surfboard(bob told me too)
Be proud of your mentoring, Im proud to have been your mentee......always LIL SNAKE.....Jeff Smith

Careful - kissing a board may cause you to drop your lil snake rating.

Jeff,

How come you no fix your board?  You need to love your board!  This is when you put a lip lock on the ding and suck out the water.  Sometimes the surfer needs to care for his equipment.
Take care and get better,
Bob

Hi guys

After my wipeout,my board is now foldable.should be able to get it in my backpack,so no fee fer meeee!....Jeff

John,

I picked up on your contrary attitude and played on it.  Thank you for your fine response the words are true.  Let's take just Morro Negrito as an isolated surfing spot.  If 20 people go to camp, the airfare is ~$17K per week.  I do think that dog piling is wrong.  Times that by a year and then times that by all the other surfing spots and that is a lot of monies to take advantage of a vacation.  Surfers are a small part of the equation, but do add to the income of the airlines.  The other dog piling is in the case of a death in a family.  The short and immediate need to be with relatives.  There is no sympathy there, only dollar signs.  Stay STOKED as it has taken us the years to mature to this lulu state...and for those who need to know what a Hono lulu is - it is (lulu) Calm (Hono) Bay.  There will be a time we will surf together.

Mahalo Nui Loa,

Bob

Bob:

I am just being contrary.  Typical me.  Where's Jeff?  Oh yeah he is out of comission with stitches.  He paid...we all pay in some way. There are people all over that are willing to take advantage of good-natured surfers just to make a quick buck.  Surfers are so trained to go with the flow that they will pay just to keep the flow going.  An admirable attribute. However the geeks will see it as an opportunity.

It is unfortunate because most short boards are easy to slip on top of stacks of bags and "they" charge you so much more.  Longboards are a little more but still are relatively thin and easy to pack...especially with the board bags they now have with all the handles etc.

Surfing is worth millions in my opinion...That' s why people are trying to take advantage... because "they" wish they could do it.  300 is 300 but if you get good waves then who cares.  A good session will put you in the right place for weeks even months..and you know what I mean.

I am originally from a place called Lunada Bay in Palos Verdes, California.  We were the local rats there and alohaed everyone.  I found out later after moving away it is now a gnarly local spot with vandalized cars and broken bones...all for the waves....and then you get them under those circumstances and what is it worth?  Not much....

They have also had alot of problems at another spot called Hollywood by the sea, Ventura. Court cases etc.  Not really into any of those kinds of things.  I surf solo come and go with very little fanfare.  Ride neutral colored boards and avoid conflict at all costs.  I will even get out of the water if things get wierd and leave.  Not into that kind of energy...it spoils the flow.  I am glad you have it sewed up at your spots.  It keeps people acting civilized.

Surfing is a control sport with flow.  If you screw with the liquid energy/flow I believe it will go against you. So yeah I like surfers and everyone else as well. Go with the flow...but I am also a bit of a joker.  Always up for a good laugh.

Not sure if I am smart and really don't care..Wish I could join you in Panama but I have some commitments that need to be attended to.
John

Mike

I am very sorry and spoke too soon in the previous post. That's what I get for
being too busy to look at all my emails. The tribute for Chris was filmed this
past summer and since I saw him in early October I thought he was still fine.
However, he passed on last week and the paddle out for him is today at 11 am at
the pier. Again I am sorry for the mix-up.
