Hi gang,
I am occasionally asked why I have Kenneth in Tae Kwon Do and if it is worth it. I think the 5 years Kenneth has been in TKD speaks loudly as to whether it is worth it. I respond this way - one of the best things I can do for Kenneth as a child is to surround him with quality people. The people that Kenneth has known these past 5 years in TKD are among the finest I know, and I want Kenneth to be around them so that he learns from them - both about TKD and life in general. In addition to that, Kenneth learns self-discipline (though he doesn't always practice it), and he has learned that the best things come to those who persevere and go the distance. I ALWAYS remind Kenneth of the kids who USED to be in TKD, but have quit along the way. Many people join TKD, but few get to wear the black belt. I think he really connected to this, and today Kevin said EXACTLY what I have been saying to him.
You folks are an important part of Kenneth's life, whether you realize it or not. And as his dad, I just want to say thank you for being such great role models for him.

Subject: [World TaeKwonDo] Have you ever been asked "What do you gain from Tae Kwon Do?"
A co-worker learned that I am a black belt and asked me an interesting
question: "Does a black belt give you any benefits?" "Like giving you
income, or getting you into places other people can't go?"
I was surprised by this question. I don't talk about my martial arts
training very much. Most people, when they find out, ask me what I
would do in a specific situation, or if I know deadly techniques etc.
This was the first time someone asked me what the return was on my
continued investment in training. I keep pondering this especially
since it is unlikely that I will be attacked. I have decided there are
a couple of reasons. One of them would be physical fitness through
learning a useful skill unlike typical cardio exercises. Giving time
to help younger students learn and grown would be another.
Has anyone else been asked this? How did you answer?
