WORLD INTERCLUB LEAGUE 2007
Reality meets Fantasy
The third season of the World Interclub League(WIL) tees off over the
first weekend of August and brings many new innovations as the
competition reaches out and touches an online fantasy world.
WIL, as it is commonly known, is one of the more unique sporting
competitions in the world with teams and players around the world
competing against each other in the sport of Pitch and Putt from their
own courses.
This year sees the introduction of a new division - a fantasy division
- which will feature "fantasy" teams representing major cities of the
world added to the competition, comprising players scores randomly
selected each month from the other "real" teams.
But the major innovation of the season will see the inclusion of a
team from the worlds most popular online fantasy world, Second Life.
With over 7 million residents, Second Life represents a significant
market with major corporations worldwide rushing to take up residency
in the fantasy world.
So when the World Interclub League tees off in August, not only will
players around the world play at their local course, but so too will a
team of players in the online world of Second Life take part, playing
on a shortened down version of the Holly Kai golf course inside Second
Life, suffering the same joys and frustrations as players in the real
world as they miss their putts and mis hit their tee shots. For one
weekend of each month, the World Interclub League will bring the real
world and fantasy world together in sport, a remarkable innovation.
To celebrate this unique development, a promotional video has been
prepared and can be downloaded from the WIL website at
http://www.worldinterclubleague.com

The entire team (8 players, 4 alternates, myself) and some support
people showed up well before the 8:30 am start time for Stanley
Park's first ever involvement in a World P&P tournament. In fact a
number of players were on the course very early practicing. The day
was sunny and 15-20 degrees (C) during play.
We decided on our team name and drew a name for the historic "first
tee-off shot". Terry Burton did the ceremonial "ribbon-cutting" and
later was the first to tee off during real play.
The individual score players played in twosomes, followed by our two
pairs and then by the alternate team members. So everyone on our
team played...of course we only submitted scores for the posted
official 8 team members. If we had counted scores of some of the
alternates we would have bettered our overall score by several
strokes!
I saw each player 3 times during the game on the 6th, 11th and 17th
holes to determine prize winners. Almost every player expressed the
excitement and stress/pressure they felt. To many this was a new
phenomenom--some reacted by playing better, others allowed the
tension to detract from their game. In any event the stress was a
manifestation of each player's desire to do his or her part for the
good of the team. Certificates of Participation and several prizes
were awarded. But ALL were winners simply by playing in the
tournament.
Our team was composed of 5 women and 7 men, ranging in age up to 91.
A few members may not have passed a drug test after the game! Prizes
were awarded for closest to the pin, farthest from the pin, fewest
number of practice strokes, lowest score men and women, highest score
and a draw was held for the caddies, helpers, cheering section etc.
Prizes included a cooler (for water of course), golf towels,
binoculars, golf balls, buckets of balls for a local driving range
and green fees for an executive golf course. An effort was made so
that good and bad players alike had a chance to qualify for prizes.
The tournament ended by 11:00 am and everyone had a fun, if somewhat
tense, time and all resolved to play again on Sept 2. Well done
Stanley Park Eagles Nest Team (S.P.E.N.T.) and our congratulations
to everyone from around the globe who participated. Special thanks
to Eero who surely did a massive amount of work organizing, tallying
scores and numerous other details.
Hello to all
A historic day for the Hørsholm PPK team today, our first Pitch and Putt match
was played in extrem weather conditions, sun, rain with thunder and lightning so
we had to leave the course for ½ an hour. We have a young team but the lads
were very enthusiastic, I think they were very nervous, one of them even asked
when the other team were turning up, I had to laugh. The lads started off very
nervous, I think some of them were scared to hit the ball, but as the holes
started going by they settled down to shoot some great shots. Kristian Ravn
finished with a great score -3, a new course record, I can tell you, that on our
course that was a great score. as the greens are so small, like up turned
saucers. Father and son played in the foursomes, it seemed to be a tale of I
score on the front 9 and you score on the back 9, I saw one shot from the 8 foot
deep bunker, Son Ronnie hit his shot straight out of bounds so he dropped
another ball in the bunker and then hit a masterly
shot straight into the hole for a great 4, thankfully his father got a par on
the hole. The scores were ok, but i am sure they could be better, so watch out
the rest of the world Hørsholm PPK is now well and truly on the Pitch and Putt
map.

thanks for that Bruce, and welcome aboard to all your team.
Its especially heartening to see so many women in your team.
good luck to you all and I hope you enjoy the intnerational part of
this sport.
Any chance of posting the press release into the forum?
And if it gets into any papers, can you post the link to it, it would
be great to see.
p.s. if any of your players are interested, there is the Rome Seniors
Open at the end of October - open to all over 55 and then the FIPPA
Seniors in Barcelona in March ( and the courses in Barcelona are
stunning), and you should start training now for the World CUp in Chile
in 2008 :-)

Stanley Park Pitch and Putt is amongst the oldest in the world and now
a team has been formed to play in the world interclub league
tournament on Aug 5 '06. On behalf of the team I wish to thank Eero
et al for taking this great idea to fruition, and thanks to the league
for accepting us.
I also wish to acknowledge the keen interest by Stanley Park players
and welcome them all to the team. We have almost enough players to
form a second team!
Pitch and Putt is a great game and can be played for one's entire
lifetime. It is fun and these international tournaments add another
dimension to the sport.
One team member, Terry B. has written an excellent press release and
sent it to many newspapers and tv networks. Perhaps this will entice
more participation and sponsorships.
Good luck to all team members in every team participating this weekend.
We shall all have a good time.
WORLD INTERCLUB LEAGUE Season II tees off.
This weekend, players from around the world will tee off in the
opening round of matches in the World Interclub League, a unique 5
month long global epic of Pitch and Putt. This years competition
sees an explosion of new entries from Australia, and new entries
from Denmark, Vancouver in Canada, as well as two more clubs from
the Netherlands.
The highlight of the first round of matches will see some of the
best players in the world in action as Canberra International (
current world record holders in this format) take on the powerful
Sant Cebria from Catalonia, Spain. It is envisaged that it will take
a world record score to win that match.
This unique sporting competition which sees 21 teams from 8
countries and 4 continents fighting it out for the honour of
becoming the world club champions has captured the imagination of
the Pitch and Putt world and will be eagerly followed by many of
the sports players around the planet. It is also rapidly becoming a
valuable tool in Pitch and Putt's development as it reaches out to
players everywhere around the world and gives them a chance to
become involved in the sport at the elite level.
With over 230 players already registered to play in this years
competition, the World Interclub League is forging its own place in
the worlds sporting calendar.

On Saturday the 25th of June the historic first match was played for
the World Challenge Shield.
In an exciting encounter for both sides, the teams finished with 4
wins apiece. Then using the tie breaker mechanism that had been agreed
upon pre match, the SOlius team won, 40 holes to 31.
Full results will be posted later, but I would like to congratulate
Solius on behalf of the Glanville players and thank them for their
vision in being part of this new global event.
It worked very well... and was very exciting.
Solius are now open to challenge for the Shield from any Pitch and
Putt/Par 3 course in the world as long as that course satisfies the
requirements of the Deed of Gift which controls the contest.
Which challenge that Solius accepts is at their discretion.

Eero Tarik
Glanville
The two biggest individual events in Ireland are the National matchplay
and the National strokeplay. It's a matter of opinion which one is the
most prestigious (both obviously being National titles).
The matchplay finals consist of 64 gents and 32 ladies who play over 3
days to determine the winner. At the outset the total entry for gents
is approx 550 (not sure of exact figures or of lady entries).Regional
qualifying rounds take place around the country with the total no of
qualifiers from that region proportional to their number of
entries(i.e the more entries a particular region has the more
qualifiers will come from that region)
All matches are played over 36 holes.
Regards,
Liam.
On June the 25th, the Glanville Golf Club and the Solius Golf Centre
of Catalonia will play the first contest for the World Challenge
Shield, a perpetual challenge contest open to all Pitch and Putt/Par 3
courses worldwide.
I will post further details about this contest, photo of the Shield
and the Deed of Gift that controls the competition later.
Each side will have eight players, and may name reserves which can be
substituted in accordance with the rules.
The Glanville team is... (with 18 hole handicap enclosed in brackets)
Mark Bevan (+3) has lowest handicap in club
Dion Crabb (+2.5) equal record holder for 18 holes in competition 49
Michael Hocking (+2) Club champion and holds unofficial course record 48
Shane McInerney (+1) Glanville Open Champion
Morrie Daley (0) Captain Glanville Cobras, Glanville Senior Champ
Gary Nokelainen (1) Glanville Cobras
Brad Moylan (2) future star
Simon Linke (3) Glanville Go Getters, future star
reserves
Tom Mowbray (3.5) elder statesman of the club
Dave Kelly (+1.7) unofficial cours record holder for 9 holes 21
Angus MacKenzie (2.5) equal record holder for 18 holes in comp 49
g'day Liam,
thanks for that info.
So this was a National Matchplay contest.
How did the players qualify for this event?
Did they go through local qualification tournaments?
And if so, how many players would have started the journey that ended
with the National final?
Is this the most prestigious individual title in Ireland?
I know...to many questions :-)
regards,
ET
p.s. the top story about the trip to Holland to check the facilities
was also quite interesting...
Hi Folks,
For all the latest p&p from Ireland
http://www.iol.ie/ppui/news.htm is the place to go.
In recent events the Irish National matchplay was held
on the seapoint course. The gents title was won by Darren Collins
and the ladies title was taken by Marian Byrne.

Liam
Well,
we appear to have attracted a few members from Ireland and a few from
the Netherlands so perhaps it might be useful if any of you could
provide a little summary of the state of the sport in your country,
and you might include your thoughts on your nations chances at the
next major event, the European Championships.
I also note that Ireland did not attend the World Cup last year - do
our Irish members know if their country will be attending in 2006?
(Here in South Australia, we will be holding World Cup trials in
August, September and October from which we will pick a squad of about
12-18 and these players will compete against each other until early
January when the three players wil be announced. Glanville will be
modified to EPPA standards for these trials.
We are hoping to play virtual internationals against Catalonia and
Chile sometime before the end of the year under EPPA regulated
distances and conditions.)

Eero
Hi Bart,
to answer a few of your questions here and elsewhere...
here is a link to the Glanville course that I manage
www.par3-glanville.com
purists will need to excuse references to "golf" - we are a developing
market !
We are a course in the Catalan model - 1488 metres for 18 holes.
We recently formed a South Australian Pitch and Putt Association and
will be sending a team to the World Cup in Barcelona.
If you want to come over for a hit... we are looking at the
possibility of holding a South Australian Open at the end of next year
so European P &P stars like yourself can save your Euros and pop over
for a hit at a nice warm time of the year. :-)
I just need to confirm with a few EPPA members that its not a time of
year that interferes with any major Euro events.
(Of course, if your club wants to try a "virtual" match against us, we
welcome them)
No spare jobs at the moment at the course, sorry. Although if you are
into IT, we have a very large defence shipbuilding operation expanding
a few kilometres north of the course and the area is booming, having
just been awarded new government contracts.
And you asked about P & P in Australia. There are a small number(3 or
4) of P & P courses in the eastern States of Australia - these follow
the Irish model. I have tried to get some interaction with them in the
past but have been unsuccessful. The whole "golf" industry in
Australia is suffering, maybe they are part of that decline, I dont
know. I am happy to report that at Glanville the opposite is true and
we are experiencing rapid growth in player numbers, competition
entries and revenue.
There are many Par 3 courses in Adelaide, and this creates a large
potential market for convertees to the shorter Pitch and Putt model.
I suspect that the Glanville inspired international activities will
have a flow on effect. At the moment we are the only course that
completely satisfies the standards, but two others are very close.
I would imagine that within 5 years Adelaide would have 4-5 courses
that amend their configuration to comply with international P and P
standards and jion the worldwide family of P & P.
I think that answers all of your questions.
see ya

Thanks for that link Bart and for adding it to the Forum links page.
I should have looked at the EPPA website links section and I would
have found it :-)
I also noticed your excellent website in the EPPA links.
I especially enjoyed the detail you have gone into to record your best
scores and holes in one. I recommend your site to all, a very thorough
job.
Speaking of jobs...I must dash and go and open up the course :-)
It will be another busy winters day for us I think. This week we have
had record high temperatures for June - in the mid 20's C and the
number of customers has made it feel like summer holidays.
Crazy weather.

This is also a forum (in Dutch) but always possible to join and aks
things in English!!
Bart Buitenhuis
Pitch&Putt The netherlands
Welcome to the World Pitch and Putt forum on Yahoo groups.
I have set up this forum for three main reasons...
a) there are few English language forums available for Pitch and Putt
enthusiasts and most of these appear to be difficult to use. This
forum seeks to allow for easy and open expression of views amongst
players and supporters worldwide.
b) the best, and most vigorous, P and P forums are on non English
websites and therefore not accessible to most English speakers,
and c) there appears to be no universal forum where all can meet and
share their views freely.
So this is it.
Whilst there will be no censorship of views in this forum we will
remove any posts that are not relevent to Pitch and Putt(spam), and we
will not accept offensive posts. At the moment an attachment will not
make it into the forum, we can deal with this issue later on.
If this forum is successful there will be many people from many
cultures using it, and English may not be their first language.
Please be tolerant and respectful of the right of others to express
their opinion, regardless of whether you agree with it or not.
I wish you all well and hope you can make this forum a useful addition
to the Pitch and Putt scene.
Regards,
Eero Tarik

in other languages.

On May the 7th the Glanville Par 3 course of Adelaide, South
Australia, played the worlds first "virtual" International Interclub
contest for Pitch and Putt/Par 3 courses when we played against Sant
Jaume of Catalonia.
On June the 5th we played a similar contest against the La Rosaleda
Golf Club of the Canary Islands and it was very exciting for both courses.
At 8am our players played at our course - 8 hours later the La
Rosaleda players played at their course and afterwards we compared
results and exchanged photos.
In both contests so far, the players have found the concept to be very
exciting and interesting.
We would like to extend an invitation to any Pitch and Putt course to
join us in playing in one of these "virtual" International Interclub
Challenges.
Our course is 1488 metres for 18 holes. We played Sant Juame who have
a nearly identical length course, and we played La Rosaleda who have a
shorter, under 1000 metres course (but has a high degree of difficulty).
We believe this is a concept that helps promote Pitch and Putt globally.
If any of you are interested send me a message and we can take it from
there...
Best regards,
