WIL 2007 - Round 1 Results

WIL 2007 teed of with a significant increase in players and teams
over 2006.
We saw many new faces, many new teams.

As always, there were many close results spread through the divisions
and it looks like an exciting season ahead in all divisions.

Below is a summary of Round 1 in WIL 2007.

Champions Division
The season teed off with our first entry from Ireland, St Patricks,
and a new team from Holland, P&P Kardinge fitting in amongst the
regulars.

The St Patricks Sinners, up against Corinda from Brisbane, had to
delay their round due to heavy rain over the preceding two days which
had left the fairways under water. In true WIL style, after the sun
shone on the course on Sunday afternoon, the St Patricks team
returned to the course in the early evening and played their round.
In a strong debut they shot a team total of 194 to defeat Corinda by
just 4 strokes, with Corinda's Anthony Murnane shooting a 44 to have
the lowest score of all players in Round 1. St Patricks 194 was the
equal lowest score of the round.

In other games in this division, Canberra International scored 194 to
easily defeat Southern Cross and to set out on their title defence
strongly whilst Sant Cebria also started the season strongly with an
impressive 196 again P&P Kardinge.
In the first round, the top 4 teams all scored within 4 strokes of
each other and it looks like being a very tough battle for honours in
this division.

Division I
Whilst we still await a few scores in this division, last years
runners up Sant Jaume have exploded out of the gates and recorded a
sensational 203 in their opening match against Canberra International
B to win by 5 strokes. A brilliant 45 in the pairs from Francisco
Garriga and Heribert Bernat laid the foundations for the top score in
this division. But with Canberra Int B and horsholm both scoring 207
on the weekend, and La Grande Motte 208, this division is also
looking to be an interesting battle.
In other games, La Grande Motte defeated WPPF comfortably, Horsholm
just held off Glanville Guns by 3 strokes and the Valley View Bumble
Bees snatched a close win by 2 strokes from Waverley who were playing
their debut game.
Scores are still coming in from La Rosaleda and Vancouver will not be
able to play until the civic strike in Vancouver concludes.

Division II
Sant Jaume's 2nd team, Sant Jaume 1994 blazed away in their opening
round with a stunning 208, and again it was the strength in their
pairs that set the score for their team and it shows how criticial it
is to get players working together in the pairs format. Their strong
score was too much for the Magpies and it looks like SJ1994 might
already have the upper hand in this division.
There was plenty of excitement in other games with Riom winning their
debut game in WIL by one stroke over Colegio de Medico from Chile,
251- 252 and Dutch team, Country Golf Ees put the points on the board
with a one stroke win over Southern Cross C.
In the other game La Totche also won their debut game over the
Glanville Go Getters.
There is still one game to go in this division with a Vancouver team
waiting to play their match.

Division III
Not as many close games as expected in this division, and we still
have two games outstanding as Wednesday Chile were prevented from
playing their round by heavy snowfalls and the 3rd Vancouver team
awaits its chance to get out onto the course.
The Glanville Cobras won their game against Sant Jaume 2008
comfortably, whilst Bethune from France took the points from Valley
View Villains, 248-260.
Waverley's number 2 team scored that courses first win in WIL with a
250-262 win over Mannevillette from France.

The Best results from Round 1 were...
Lowest Team total - 194, Canberra Int A and St Patricks Sinners.
Lowest individual score - 44, Anthony Murnane, Corinda
Lowest pairs score - Francisco Garriga and Heribert Bernat, Sant Jaume
Lowest Ladies score - Robyn Humphries, Glanville Go Getters

This year we also have a Fantasy division where players were randomly
selected from the teams in the competition to represent
various "Fantasy" teams from around the world, and this division
includes a team of players in the online world of Second Life.
In Fantasy League games in round 1, the Dubai Sand Scrapers, led be a
strong 48 from shane Redmond and a 48 in the pairs by Rod Blewitt and
Alan Wright, won narrowly, 206-208 over Shanghai Steam.
The strong pairs form of Marc Adell and Miguel Moya helped the New
York Pitchers take the points over the LA shakers in the all US derby
and in the battle of the worlds, Second Life, led by a SL record 48
from Getme Somme and some very consistent team mates, produced a
stunning 199 to record a convincing victory over the Tokyo Typhoons.

Round 2 of the World Interclub League will be played over the weekend
of the 1st and 2nd of September.
