The entire team (8 players, 4 alternates, myself) and some support
people showed up well before the 8:30 am start time for Stanley
Park's first ever involvement in a World P&P tournament. In fact a
number of players were on the course very early practicing. The day
was sunny and 15-20 degrees (C) during play.
We decided on our team name and drew a name for the historic "first
tee-off shot". Terry Burton did the ceremonial "ribbon-cutting" and
later was the first to tee off during real play.
The individual score players played in twosomes, followed by our two
pairs and then by the alternate team members. So everyone on our
team played...of course we only submitted scores for the posted
official 8 team members. If we had counted scores of some of the
alternates we would have bettered our overall score by several
strokes!
I saw each player 3 times during the game on the 6th, 11th and 17th
holes to determine prize winners. Almost every player expressed the
excitement and stress/pressure they felt. To many this was a new
phenomenom--some reacted by playing better, others allowed the
tension to detract from their game. In any event the stress was a
manifestation of each player's desire to do his or her part for the
good of the team. Certificates of Participation and several prizes
were awarded. But ALL were winners simply by playing in the
tournament.
Our team was composed of 5 women and 7 men, ranging in age up to 91.
A few members may not have passed a drug test after the game! Prizes
were awarded for closest to the pin, farthest from the pin, fewest
number of practice strokes, lowest score men and women, highest score
and a draw was held for the caddies, helpers, cheering section etc.
Prizes included a cooler (for water of course), golf towels,
binoculars, golf balls, buckets of balls for a local driving range
and green fees for an executive golf course. An effort was made so
that good and bad players alike had a chance to qualify for prizes.
The tournament ended by 11:00 am and everyone had a fun, if somewhat
tense, time and all resolved to play again on Sept 2. Well done
Stanley Park Eagles Nest Team (S.P.E.N.T.) and our congratulations
to everyone from around the globe who participated. Special thanks
to Eero who surely did a massive amount of work organizing, tallying
scores and numerous other details.
