Many individuals go to martial arts for personal development
and a life-long practice, but the one who is a true
teacher is the one who will write about his experiences in
the study of the martial arts, and in different things
he encountered. Thus, reading and writing is very important
to be a master who will benefit further generations. I have
met many people who became very good but were only limited
to demonstrations and tournaments and did not separate themselves
to be able to write about the arts they did and to offer
guidance in learning to the new people.
The difference between Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee is that
Bruce Lee always put down on the paper what he had seen.

Before you start, you should have the students
run half a mile, and do lots of Karate kicking until
they start to sweat. When they start to sweat that is
when you begin the Eskrima technical training. If someone
is in the class just for entertainment and conceptual
understanding of the techniques so he can talk about it
later to friends, you dont need him. The reason is each
and everyone of your students should participate in the class,
and the class must have 50 % physical preparation training
before technical training is begin (in each class time).
This is because if the student is not TOUGH, he
can still lose against a simpler fighter who has trained
to be tough and doesnt give up, even though your student
may have many advanced techniques in his repertoire.
Martial arts is a continuous determination, and each
art can lose against the other, unless the presenter of
the art is TOUGH, persistent, and Knowlegeable, and also
CLEVER as well.

When practicing Serrada basic fundamental counter system,
imagine you have no space to the left or right of you, so
you do controlled stepping.

When practicing Largo Mano (Long Range) you imagine that
there IS space to move around. Largo is when you cannot reach
him with your LEFT HAND. Then you meet his oncoming strike,
or go in a trajectory against it (striking his hand/wrist),
or smother him and take all strikes to the ground.

In actual fight, you could begin with Largo and end up
in Serrada range.

But as a practice in the class, keep them separate
as arts so you master the concepts of each.

Look at the face of any person. Face tells everything.
If he looks like an animal, he is gonna soon become
one when there is a confrontation with you. If he
looks very sad and ultra-reasonable, he is still bad,
because there is no need to be sad, he is also
unbalanced. The one who doesnt want anything and
is detached is correct, because he puts a distance
to first see any situation before he connects.
Before you go inside any store, any building,
look at the face/s of people inside. Avoid problems
this way. A trustworthy person is one who has
talked to you, and understood you, but you have
to let everyone have his / her space and not go
in any expectation. Self Preservation.

Compared to Serrada, which is has a specially defined
counters for its 12 strike angles, most other eskrima
systems are longer range, and these other eskrima systems
employ mostly the use of

Abanikos
Figure-8s, front & backwards
Arko's
Puno utilization

Pull in your stick hand to the chamber position,
do intake of breathe. Now, in isometric do strike 1
as you exhale slowly. Do for other strike angles.

Also try doing Lock & Block using different weight sticks.
Short but different weights. Then, start from Largo range
and come into the closer Serrada range and fight against
Espada y Daga. Requires good
stepwork, shuffling, etc.

Even better than Wing Chun's Chi Sao drills. No offense to any WC
people out here.

You can get sciatica (needles/tingling in leg) due to
nerves of spinal cord being trapped or crushed
between collapsed or mispositioned bones in the
spinal structure (in the back).

Below is a recommendation, but consult more
people for your particular condition.

Instead of becoming horrified and thinking you
need surgery to cure it. Try doing the following:

1. Open up the hip joint by doing side to side
swings. Place the base foot on which you are
standing 90 degrees pointing at 9 am in one
case, and at 3 pm direction in the other case
(alternating the leg). This is akin to side kick
but the leg is never bent, and swung straight
side to side.

2. Do similar straight leg circular moves,
like outside crescents. Make sure the base foot
is again placed 90 degrees pointing so you
dont pull any ligament in your thigh or hip
joint.

3. Do basic karate Front, Side, Back, Crescent
kicks.

Keep neck and upper body positions correct.

This is very healthy for the back. Start slow
and try to guess the correct positions.
Do the kicking in correct body alignment,
so have a karate instructor or TKD instructor
show you if one is available.

4. Rest. Sleep off the pain for one or two days.

5. Eat manly foods: so you feel like an Armenian
uncle !

Warm up using basic Karate kicking, at least 100 kicks in four
directions at imaginary partners. Then do basic karate kata.

Punching drills.

Then as you start to sweat. Now start your Serrada class.

Keep it always rugged. Do not do a COLD class.

A warm class where everyone is sweating and feeling healthy
is very necessary in order to establish a martial arts
training. Because fighting requires body movement, mental
determination, and
struggle, and is not won by knowing technicals alone.
I am the first guro who instilled this concept in
Eskrima training. Begin like hard karate. Then half and hour
later, turn it into Serrada, and later into whip.

I agree.

Strong Lock & Block drilling, I think, is the best single training drill that a person can do to truly sharpen one's reflex-responses.  Even better than Wing Chun's Chi Sao drills.  No offense to any WC people out here.

when releasing from the tension which builds up when you have
successfully jammed a strike number 3... you can attempt a fast
knockout. it can also be attempted very easily when doing an evasive
advanced crossblock against strike number 3.

the opportunity presents itself when you are weapon to weapon...
either you are jammed in and building up some tension(momentary)...
or you are using advanced footwork and shooting backwards...
remaining in right foot forward orientation. in this fashion you
have very long reach.

from the jam you must translate into the advanced footwork and shoot
backwards with your midsection... the pass must be aggressive/jerking
to cause the opponent's shoulder to be jerked to your right.

at that exact instant you can attempt a solid knockout with a strike
number 2 ... but it is done with a backhand type of technique and you
must learn to "wrap" the strike so the angle strikes slightly from
behind him.

learning to angle the strike from the witik tension moment is the
key... so the release goes right to the target. then you must learn
to allow the strike to "wrap".

that is the most instant effect.

a slightly slower variation can still work against most opponents...
you first complete your pass and step with your left foot at about a
45degree angle from him while you are striking with number 2. it can
work from a jammed position when you aggressively pass him.

...

in this fashion you are taking an attacking attitude from that
section of the counter... instead of the normal defensive one.

you must realize when this is safely possible and when it is not.
when your opponent oversteps or attempts to strike you with number 3
while stepping across the centerline with his right foot... that
would be the ideal position.

this method is very effective when executed properly. striking
G20... or base of the skull just below the level of the ear; as a
general description.

this is a knockout.

...

having completely executed this maneuver you recover it into a "point
check" half-chambering to strike number 6 or 7 depending on your body
orientation. push the point(checking him)... neck or shoulder to
disrupt/control him. in a perfect maneuver the point is placed
immediately never disengaging contact with your weapon from his body.

the number 2 strike must land dead to the target to make this
possible.

if you do not have this level of control then you simply snap strike
with the number 2 and return to sampling. using this particular
method i would simply double up on the 2 strike placing the immediate
second one to either the same target or his arm/weapon... continue
sampling/countering from there.(assuming you didn't knock him out
already)

there is a great deal of power available from that position.

there is of course the witik counter itself against strike number
3... the variation described above starts from the weapon contact,
making it more sure... and accesible to those with less experience.
in the moment you are weapon to weapon you are controlling him
knowing in that "instant" by touch itself he cannot guard. even if
he attempts to guard himself with his left... if you do it correctly
your strike with wrap around and the IMPACT would go through his hand
anyway... daga guarding same thing.

in blade fighting(espada y daga) this particular strike is a FALSE-
EDGE strike. when using a stick you can make it a little more
powerful by striking with the "flat" if you are familiar with edge-
awareness. since the stick has no real edge... it is best to strike
with the flat in order to maximize the angle possible in teh wrist.

most fighters cannot adequately guards their balls!!
most fighters have bad stance.

when training together make it a "rule" that either person has the
right to "slap kick the balls"(snap front kick but gentle/fast)
whenever the other guy leaves the open for attack.

in this way you will both learn the awareness of your stance/line so
that you cannot easily be taken advantage of.

in self-defense... when opponent goes to strike your face/high:

one of two things works great wonders... lean away and snap kick his
balls

two of two things is to DROP TO KNEE and reverse punch or uppercut
the balls with palm or fist.

ONE is from distance out of his reach
TWO is within his reach inside his strike focus and under it... very
close. two can be followed up with trapping his leg and taking him
down.
