Congrats to Murali but there is a stat that is worth a mention at this moment...all wickets taken in test cricket are in the end valued the same in stats but we all know deep inside that wickets taken between the major 8 sides in test cricket still matter the most and if we go through the stats cutting off zimbabwe & bangladesh :-
Warne 691 (708)
McGrath 552 (563)
Murali 537 (700)
Walsh 510 (519)
Kumble 499 (552)
I am not blaming Muralitharan for the fact that other teams play less against those two teams in comparision with sri lanka but he has a huge advantage compared to others by getting a lot of easy test wickets.

Hi Ho All,
A hearty congrats to Murali for passing 700 wickets. Better still is that he
gets a crack at the world record in Australia in the up coming series. He
needs 9 more wickets, buit there are only two tests, which can mean only two
innings if Australia has anything to say about it.
Furthermore, I can't imagine many Australians wanting to be part of that
record, so they will fight that little bit harder to keep their wicket I
suspect.
Anyhoo, good luck to him.
Cheers
Christopher
