Thank You for your reply. My daughter and another girl from our
youth program went to Colonial States in DC last year. Another girl
from our league (my daughters "rival" as she calls her) was there
also. This year about 7-10 girls from our area in MD should make it
to Colonial States. We put the word out when we go to our regular
season matches to try and encourage more girls to make it to the all
girl competitions. Unfortunately it's still too "grass roots" and we
can't afford to travel too far. See you in DC?

Thank you for that lead. I checked out as much as I could. They
list a lot of tourneys. One did mention girls but I need to reread
all the fine print first. I guess there's not much out there for
girls. I thought I was looking in all the wrong places.

Gennie: You may wish to contact Ron Tirpak, Director of Women's Wrestling USA Wrestling (Team Pennsylvania) who will direct you toward his counterpart in Wisconsin and/or Minnesota. You may contact him at his office 610-489-4111 ext. 2109 or at his home 610-544-4585, or email him at rtirpak@....
As to your second inquiry, the difference between folkstyle and freestyle is that the former concentrates on control (i.e. riding time) whereas freestyle concentrates more on obtaining back exposure. Freestyle is much faster, and more technique oriented than is folkstyle, as more points can be earned for back exposure in freestyle than in folkstyle. Moreover, freestyle is distinguished by the fact that once action is stopped during a period, the wrestlers resort to par terre position, where the bottom wrestler will "flatten out" to resist being turned by the top wrestler for 15 seconds or until the referee determines the top wrestler can gain no advantage, and then have both wrestlers return to neutral. Whereas, in folkstyle, the bottom wrestler is allowed to escape or reverse, if he can.
Most women's wrestling in USA Wrestling and FILA tournaments are freestyle. Because women cannot and do not wrestle from strength as do men, they are better in freestyle. I have watched women's matches where the action is so fast that one scored a pin before I was able to figure out what was going on. Hope this provides some insight to you. Best of luck to you.

Does anybody know of tournaments in Wisconsin or Minnesota that have open divisions? I wrestled in high school, but my college doesn't have a women's wrestling program and I want to keep wrestling, so I'm trying to find tournaments.
Also, what are the main differences between folkstyle and freestyle wrestling? Where could I learn freestyle?

I don't know how close you are to New Jersey but I
believe Phillipsburg has a year round wrestling club.
You can check it out at www.redhawkwrestling.com. I
don't know much about them but except for they have an
excellent program from what I'm told. Good Luck

There is no crises.... The best way to show him you are serious is by working hard and ignoring his comments. He will only try to get you to quit. Stick with it and work hard.
Best place to learn something before wrestling practice starts would be local area wrestling clubs. I don't know where you are but in the Portland Oregon area we have 3 or 4 all year round clubs and tons of local area clubs that are starting practices this week and next. Contact your local State Wrestling Director. You can find his name on themat.com or usawrestling.org.
The next best place to learn some things is your boyfriend that has been wrestling for three years.
Okay, I have ALWAYS loved rough sports. I played hockey, i rock climb, football....now here's the crisis...
I have had a boyfriend that has wrestled since he was in 2nd grade. I am now 15 and in 10th grade, and he knows how bad I want to wrestle. I talked to my dad, he is supproting me all the way on it, for the first time, my father is backing me in something. He is proud. Some of the guys on the team that are my friend say they know I can do it and i should go for it. The season starts soon, and the coaches know I am wrestling. But the one coach does not like me. He thinks the me and Norman's almost 3 and a half year relationship is nothing but interefereing with HIS wrestling. But I am the one (i managed wrestling the last 2 years) who kept him going back when he wanted to quit. I took the coach to the side today, and told him I want to wrestle. He said he can't stop me, but he was laughing and playing it like a joke. It hurt. I know he thinks I'm not serious but I have been down in the wrestling room for weeks trying to learn what I can, and getting in shape for the conditioning, and now he's acting like I am a joke. How can I approach him and tell him I am serious? I was really looking to him to help me learn before the season starts!

i juss wanna say that i'm glad that girl's wrestling is becoming more
popular and that girls out there are fighting against the opinionated
sexists. i've wrestled for 2 years in texas on a girl's team and now
am the only girl on our now co-ed team in colorado. i show up to
practice because of my determination and to prove their stereotyping
me a weakling wrong. i also want to recommend that to get in shape
that you start lifting weights and do cardio-type stuff. then if the
small guys are faster and the bigger guys are stronger, try a
different weightclass and work on your technique. you learn to be
mature and get through certain discomforts and learn to love the
sport! i encourage all who are interested. good luck and kick azz.
Join your high school team. And send your name, mailing address to me, Kent
Bailo, USGWA Director, and I'll put you on our mailing list so that you have
all of the updated tournament information that you need. Kent Bailo

hi i am 13 and well last year was my first season of wrestling and i really enjoyed it. to get in shape for this season i ran cross country for my school. it was fun to be part of a team and also i wasent laying around all the time. i also enjoy running track to keep in shape after wrestling is over. cheerleading is also a good way to keep the pounds off. wrestling is a good experience and i am glad that you joined. women really need to show that we can do anything boys or men can do and in most casaes we can do things better. so to keep in shape thia year eat lots of healthy snack and meals not all the junk food some of your nonathletic friends can eat. hope you have fun in wrestling i know i did.
