Re: [womenswrestling] Tournaments

Gennie: You may wish to contact Ron Tirpak, Director of Women's Wrestling USA Wrestling (Team Pennsylvania) who will direct you toward his counterpart in Wisconsin and/or Minnesota.  You may contact him at his office 610-489-4111 ext. 2109 or at his home 610-544-4585, or email him at rtirpak@....

As to your second inquiry, the difference between folkstyle and freestyle is that the former concentrates on control (i.e. riding time) whereas freestyle concentrates more on obtaining back exposure. Freestyle is much faster, and more technique oriented than is folkstyle, as more points can be earned for back exposure in freestyle than in folkstyle.  Moreover, freestyle is distinguished by the fact that once action is stopped during a period, the wrestlers resort to par terre position, where the bottom wrestler will "flatten out" to resist being turned by the top wrestler for 15 seconds or until the referee determines the top wrestler can gain no advantage, and then have both wrestlers return to neutral. Whereas, in folkstyle, the bottom wrestler is allowed to escape or reverse, if he can.

Most women's wrestling in USA Wrestling and FILA tournaments are freestyle.  Because women cannot and do not wrestle from strength as do men, they are better in freestyle.  I have watched women's matches where the action is so fast that one scored a pin before I was able to figure out what was going on.  Hope this provides some insight to you. Best of luck to you.

Does anybody know of tournaments in Wisconsin or Minnesota that have
open divisions?  I wrestled in high school, but my college doesn't
have a women's wrestling program and I want to keep wrestling, so I'm
trying to find tournaments.

Also, what are the main differences between folkstyle and freestyle
wrestling?  Where could I learn freestyle?
