At my High School, for the next wrestling season we're looking at
only 2 girls on the team. I know of nearly a dozen girls who would
love to wrestle, but are too intimadated by the guys to go out for
the team. No matter how much my cohort and I try to explain you CAN
only wrestle girls if you really, really want to, the very fact that
wrestling is listed under boys sports and the way they see the boys
horsing around scares them to death.
I also happen to know of a good dozen 8th graders coming into the
school next year who would make great wrestlers, and would probably
go out for it if they weren't too scared.
The point of this is, any ideas on how to start a women's only team?
Would I have to make an appeal to the school board? Any suggestions
on what to say, and how to recruit would be helpful too. I know it
took me, lowly freshie a lot of guts just to walk into the gym the
first day, let alone survive suicide training (our nickname for the
first few weeks of just conditioning before we can even hit the
mats.) and, I understand that not all kids can get up the courage to
do that, but I don't think that doesn't mean they should have a
chance. As much as I don't want to pussify woman's wrestling, and I
have every belief they can wrestle guys, I think just the
name 'Women's Wrestling' would encourage more girls to come out, even
if we did just practice with the guys.
So, any suggestions? Do I make an iota of sense, or should I give it
up now? :)
Thanks,
