I was going to stay out of this, but what the
Hell.

To the previous poster, get a revolver -- one
without one of the new "safeties." You pull the trigger,
it goes bang. No levers, buttons, or things to
remember about operating procedures. Just point at
whatever you want holes in and start shooting.

To
this "I've shot a Glock" poster -- unless you've got
lots of money for step-by-step guns, forget the airgun
idea and just get the gun you want to use. If you feel
competent with levers, buttons, and switches... get a
pistol if you want. Whatever you get (revolver or
pistol), try to get something with at least ".357 Magnum"
capability -- and this has as much, or more, to do with ammo
variety as it does caliber and power. Lots of progress
has been made in bullet design in the last decade or
so -- which is important to you because it is the
bullet that does the job. You don't HAVE to have a fast
bullet, just a good bullet.

Go to any place that
has gun and hunting magazines for sale and buy the
ones with articles about handgun bullets, handgun
hunting, self-defense ammo, et cetera. Learn about the
ammo FIRST, then go shopping for a suitable gun.
