18 months ago, I started a project to name the All-time ASU football team. I received some great feedback from fans, and got in touch with some past players who provided invaluable insight. The project stalled for two reasons: mostly, I got distracted by work, but also, the selections proved far more difficult than I ever anticipated. I don't want to quit, so the project is back on my front burner. But I need assistance.

First, a recap of the rules (which I set for myself): most importantly, this will be a true team, with the right number of players at each position. That means one halfback and one fullback for example. Players will be evaluated based on their college career, not their pro performance, and extended careers will carry more weight. So while Derrick Rodgers' performance in '96 was one of the great single seasons in Sun Devil history, it's not enough for him to make the team. Players will be judged at the position they played in college, not the pros, so Darren Woodson will have to make it as an OLB, not a SS. Football performance will also outweigh off-field contributions or all-around popularity, so while Pat Tillman was without doubt one of the greatest men ever to wear a Sun Devil uniform, he wasn't necessarily one of the two best OLBs in ASU history.

Realistically, only players from the WAC era and beyond will be considered (that's 1962 onwards). It is almost impossible to fairly evaluate players from the Border Conference days, although please let me know if you feel strongly about anyone excluded.

Some positions are relatively simple; others are very difficult. I already named the two cornerbacks: Mike Haynes and Eric Allen. Just 20 more to go. Please send me an e-mail with your suggestions or post comments to this article.

Over the coming weeks, Wired Devils will be announcing the all-time ASU
team. If you would like to nominate anyone for this team, please send
an email to webmaster@....

Many of the selections are likely to come from the dominant teams of
the early 70s, but they will undoubtedly be joined by more recent
players, and a few from the early days of Sun Devil history.

The cornerbacks were the first to be announced. Check out Wired Devils
for those two selections, and keep coming back over the weeks ahead as
the entire team is unveiled.

Saturday sees the biggest game yet in the Sun Devils' 2000 campaign,
as the University of Washington Huskies visit Sun Devil Stadium.

My prediction is for a shootout. UW and OSU racked up about 1,000
yards in offense last week, and ASU has used its speed on offense to
gain an average of 35 points in the past 3 games.

The key to this one is probably the ASU run defense. If we can keep
UW's running game under control, we should be able to win.

Remember, Wired Devils has over 100 links to Sun Devil stuff on the
web, including local newspapers for each of our opponents.

The next two weeks promise to be important and exciting for the Sun
Devils, in both football and basketball.

In football, the recruiting season is at full speed as wee count down
to February 2, when high school athletes can sign their Letter of
Intent. All signs point to ASU having their best haul of recruits in
at least ten years.

In basketball, the Devils are about to face USC, UCLA, UofA and NC
State in a period of ten days. Two or more wins in those games would
mean that the whispers of a possible tournament bid would start to get
louder.

Let's not forget the Devils' baseball team, either. The season starts
this Friday, January 21, with a three game series at home to Utah.
There's no better way to spend a sunny Arizona winter afternoon than on
the bleachers of Packard Stadium.

Wired Devils is your home for all the latest Sun Devil news. You'll
find links to over 100 ASU sites on the web, including recruiting
services, message boards and live audio of basketball and baseball
games.

The wait is almost over. On Monday, September 6 at 5:00pm, the 1999
ASU football season will kickoff in Sun Devil Stadium. The opponent,
Texas Tech, features Heisman Trophy candidate Ricky Williams (no, not
THAT one) and with the game on national TV, it will be an opportunity
for JR Redmond to establish himself as an elite player.

Wired Devils is your home for Sun Devil football on the web. With over
100 links to sites devoted to ASU, you’ll be able to keep up with all
the developments as the season progresses. You’ll even find links to
the hometown newspaper of our opponents, so you can check out what the
enemy is thinking!

My prediction for 1999 is an 8-3 record, although a lot depends upon
the performance of Ryan Kealy. If he plays consistently well, 9-2 is a
strong possibility. However, if he falters then a losing record is not
out of the question given our tough schedule.

This Wednesday, February 3, is one of the most important dates of the year for
the Sun Devil football program. This is the first day that High School athletes
can sign Letters of Intent, which essentially is a promise to attend a specific
school in the Fall of 1999. Although it will take a couple of years for most of
these players to have an impact, a solid haul of recruits is essential to the
health of the program.

On Wednesday at 9pm Arizona time (that’s 11pm Eastern, 8pm Pacific) please join
me for the official launch of the Wired Devils Chatroom as we discuss this
year’s recruits.

I’ll provide full instructions on Wednesday evening.

http://www.WiredDevils.com/

In the meantime, here are three places to go for regular updates.

http://www.cactusranch.com/devils/msgboard.html

http://www.superdevils.com/

http://1-888-javanow.com/wildwest/wildboard.htm

So far, all indications are that Bruce Snyder has put together a great class,
but there are always some last-minute surprises. Last year, the athletic
department released a list of commitments at approximately 6pm Arizona time on
the official website.

In other news, the basketball team is almost certainly out of the running for an
NCAA tournament bid, but an NIT appearance is still a real possibility. The
baseball season is underway, and ASU is unbeaten against admittedly weak
opposition. Things get serious next weekend when the Devils travel to
Tallahassee to take on the Florida State Seminoles.

It’s an exciting and important time of the year for Arizona State.

The basketball team heads to the Oregon schools this week, and then
comes home to face Cal and Stanford. The Devils need to go at least
3-1 in these games to have any shot at the NCAA tournament after
heartbreaking losses against USC, UCLA and UofA.

The baseball season is now underway, and the Devils have gotten off
to a fine start versus Utah. One new feature this season: the Six-Pac
is no more, and the Devils will now face each of the Pac-10 teams for
one three-game series (except for Oregon, which does not have a baseball
program). ASU and UofA have also scheduled a non-conference series so
the two rivals will play six games against each other.

Meanwhile, we’re only a couple of weeks from the date that football
recruits can sign letters of intent. This past weekend, ASU hosted a
large number of recruits. Let’s hope they were impressed!

I’ve added a new "Archives" page to Wired Devils which features links
to a number of articles that I’ve found on the web over the past few
years. I hope you like it.

After the fourth quarter collapse at Southern Cal, and the no-show versus Notre
Dame, the Devils are now 2-4 and out of contention for anything other than a
minor bowl bid. Not quite the season anyone had in mind.

There’s no game for the Devils this weekend because the scheduled game versus
Stanford was moved to Thursday night, October 22 before the season started. Do
you think FOX Sports Net is still excited about televising this one?

The biggest question about the Stanford game will be the quarterback situation.
Ryan Kealy has been generally ineffective this season, and came up with a
miserable performance against Notre Dame. Personally, I think Coach Snyder
should give Chad Elliott the starting nod versus Stanford, although I’m not
ready to give up on Kealy altogether.

The best case scenario for the remainder of the season has the Devils finishing
7-4, beating UofA and spending Christmas in Hawaii. Right now, however, I’m
more concerned about getting to 3-4 against Stanford.

Meanwhile, the basketball season starts in one month. It’s tough to predict
just what kind of team the Devils will have this season. Remember that Coach
Evans’ recent string of impressive recruits won’t attend ASU until the Fall of
1999. It was good to see ASU recognizing Ned Wulk with the naming of the court
at the Wells Fargo Arena.

This Saturday, the Devils have a chance to resurrect their season in Los
Angeles, where they take on #21 Southern Cal. With a win, the Devils would be
3-1 in the Pac-10 with a realistic chance of postseason play; a loss would
evaporate the momentum gained with last week’s victory over Oregon State.

There will be a sizable contingent of Devil fans in the LA Coliseum. I hope to
be there myself. If you cannot attend the game in person, it will be broadcast
live on ABC in Arizona and the Pacific time-zone at 4pm PT. In other parts of
the country, the game is available on ESPN’s Gameplan pay-per-view service, so
any decent sports bar should be able to pick it up.

If you’re watching the game at home, log in to Wired Devils and visit the "Sun

This is the first weekly newsletter using the new Wired Devils subscription
list. Thanks to all of you for your support -- over 150 people have signed up
in just ten days.

It's been a gloomy start to the season. The North Texas game failed to raise my
confidence. I think we will look back on this week's Oregon State game as the
cornerstone to the season. Fingers crossed for an impressive showing on both
sides of the ball.

For those of you (like me) who can't attend the game, let's use the opportunity
to make this a multimedia event. As you probably know, Broadcast.com offers
live radio commentary of every ASU football, basketball and baseball game.

In addition, there is a NEW service that will make Saturday night a truly
interactive session. The SUN DEVIL SPORTS LINK is a live chat area which will
allow us to discuss the game real time! Although it's available 24/7, I will
try to publicize specific times when it is more likely you will find other
Devils online.

So at 7pm Arizona time on Saturday night (10pm on the East coast) log in to
Wired Devils and follow the links to "Broadcast.com" and the "Sun Devils
Sports Link".

G2 for FREE (there is also a premium version called G2 Plus which costs $30).

First, welcome to the 50 new members who have signed up to this list in the past
two days. There are now over 120 Wired Devils on this mailing list.

The Phoenix New Times has a cover story this week entitled: "The Selling of ASU
Football." It makes for interesting (and sobering) reading. I'll avoid any
editorial comment for now, and let you all make up your own mind.

Don't forget the live chat session during the North Texas game. Follow the link
to the SUN DEVIL SPORTS LINK at 7pm Arizona time on Saturday night (10pm on the
East coast).
