Kentucky Lake is awesome for sailing. I don't know where you are
located, but near Kentucky Dam, there are good launching places on
either side of the lake, so regardless of the wind direction, there is
always a great choice. I grew up windsurfing all over Kentucky Lake
and still windsurf there when visiting my parents in Paducah.
My favorite thing about Kentucky Lake is that it is so huge, that it
you can always find places to avoid the motor boats, and if you get a
big wind out of the S/SW, you can have some big 4 foot rollers. Great
fun!
Where is Lake Carnico?

Has anyone on the list gotten to windsurf lately? I went to Lake
Barkley for the Memorial Day weekend to spend it with my family. I took
all of my gear, and the wind never did more than about 5 MPH. It blew
at least 20-25 here in Louisville on the Friday we left for the
weekend. I watched the trees twist for the first 2 hours of the 3 hour
trip to Lake Barkley, and then it was calm. :^)
I did conclude that I would much rather spend 15 minutes loading my
gear for a trip and have no wind for 3 days, than to spend 3 days with
great wind and no gear, so it is always worth taking the gear just in
case.
Happy sailing,
Creston

Didn't have much time and it seemed windy, so zipped out to Deam's this
afternoon. Forecast was 10 - 15, once again they lied, oh well, it was sunny
and the water wasn't that cold. Picked up my season pass today, but no mention
was made of the $5 launch fee Mike talked about. Will wait until they ask to
get one. Later, Rick.

An excellent report. I worked yesterday, but I was hoping that someone
was able to get out to sail. When I was outside for lunch, I noticed
how windy, sunny, and warm it was and thought, "what a perfect day to
sail!" Of course when I went back outside at 5:30, the temperature had
dropped about 10-15 degrees. Amazing how quickly that changed. I bet
you were a bit chilly. The water probably started feeling warm by the
end of the day. Glad you had a great day. I wish I could have joined
you.

Yesterday, I got to sail, first time this Spring since Hatteras trip
in first week in April. Got to Patoka beach @12:30 (Indiana non-
resident park passes are $46 this year and they are requiring non-
motorized water craft including windsurfers to get a $5 annual
permit). Only took my big board (118 liters) and a 6.6 sail. Matched
up great for first hour or so.. no rain, storm clouds missed the lake
to the east all afternoon. Winds kept building all afternoon. Came
in and increased my downhaul twice.. leach ended up loose and floppy

was way over-powered but having too much fun to stop. i was using
Wardog's 10" free-weed fin, which i think allowed my to sail farely
comfortably in such big conditions. A 90 liter board and a 5.0 sail
would have been a better match. Drug myself out of the water about
4pm, nearly hypothermic (wore only board shorts and a rash shirt)..
great day to start the local season.. slept really well last night..

Hey Bill,
Glad to hear you got some sailing in today, and also some good rigging
practice. I took my lunch break outside at about 2:00 while it was
sunny, and yes, the wind looked a little unpredictable. I wanted to
come by after work to see if you were down there, but my wife had some
event to attend, so I had to get the turkey burgers on the grill.
did anyone else get to go today? Jesenko?

started to pick up out of the W and it was great for awhile. I barely got back
because the winds were picking up. Hopped on my other rig and got some great
runs in. Then it got wild,6,6sail was way to much.I made it back and almost
rigged my 4.0 sail which would have been perfect.IT stayed up for about a half

For those of you that have not been to the webpage I assembled for
Windsurfing Kentucky, I have made a few updates to it recently. I have
added a new weather forecast link to a couple of locations like
Louisville, Kentucky Lake, and Patoka Lake. This link goes to the
forecast graphs of NOAA. It is only a 48 hour forecast, but I have
found it to be the most reliable in my experience. I was first given
the link by Jesenko who is on the list. Thanks again Jesenko.
The Windsurfing Kentucky webpage can be found at
http://www.crestonparker.com/windsurf/
I also added a new photo, some new links, and an advertisement for Rick
Robison who has lots of used gear for sale. Seriously, Rick has a lot
of gear. Oh, need a replacement mast foot for that Bic Dufour Wing from
1980, Rick probably has it.
TIP: In my observations, TV weather forecasts are about a day off when
they are 5 days away. So if it is Monday, and they say it will be sunny
on Friday, rainy on Saturday, and sunny on Sunday. I find that it will
not rain on Saturday, but Sunday instead. Again, this is just my
observation, but start watching and see if it is true or not.
Does anyone else have any good weather forecast sites or tips?

I have quite a bit of junk.An old longboard mistrail, bic nova, 10 ft. bic, 9ft.
8in. mistrail,9ft.mistrail,and a 8ft.6in. seatrend.My sail collection goes from
9.0 to 3.0.I am ready for almost anything.I have a little trailer to carry all
this junk.I can jibe and jump, but I am no hot dog.Do some wavesailing.I go to
Sullivans Island,SC,Islandmorada,Fla,and up on Lake Erie in Canada near Buffalo
almost every year. Some years we get shut out because we plan these trips around
friends and relatives , not the weather.Quite a few times I have had some
stellar days.I have a 13yr,old son who also sails. He has not hooked in or
planed yet,but is getting close. The Nova is really his,but I am glad I got it
for him. It is a lot of fun on light wind and cold water flukey windy days.Hope
to get some good sailing days in this year. Thanks Bill

The Land Between the Lakes area is amazing. Kentucky Lake and Lake
Barkley are so large, that any direction is great wind, but the launch
site may differ depending on the wind direction. Your launch site may
also be determined by how much you want waves. If the wind blows hard
out of the south, you can get 4 foot rollers on the north end of
kentucky Lake. We had a windsurfing weekend on those two lakes last
October, and I would like to make it an annual gig.

Just got back from a great week at the Outer Banks. If you haven't

if interested let me know. Anyone just starting who needs equipment,
I've got a van and storage shed full.

but on a W or SW wind it comes over the top of the dam and is pretty good for a
small inland lake. I have never been to the land between the lakes.I would like

I was contacted a few weeks ago by a writer from the Paducah Sun
newspaper about an article on windsurfing in Kentucky and the
surrounding states. On this Friday (May 5), the Paducah Sun is supposed
to publish this article on windsurfing. Hopefully, this article will
help to bring more attention to windsurfing and kite surfing in the
region. Part of the article should mention my website which has a link
to the Windsurfing Kentucky YahooGroup, so hopefully that will also
bring in some new friends to share and meet. It should also encourage
more people to learn, and for those that used to sail, to get back into
it.
Note: For those friends that have received this email as a blind carbon
copy, and have not yet joined the Windsurfing Kentucky YahooGroup, let
me encourage you to join by visiting...

Happy sailing,

How is everyone on the Windsurfing Kentucky (and other surrounding
states) YahooGroup doing? Has everyone had a chance to sail this spring
in some of the great wind we've had.
We had our first child in January, so I have only been able to hit the
water once since then. It was a couple of weeks before Easter and it
was excellent. I went to Patoka Lake in Indiana, and the winds were
blowing in a range from 8-22 knots (10-26 MPH). When I was rigging it
was really blowing, and since I had not been since Thanksgiving, I
figured I would have to take a breather between each out and back run.
The wind ended up doing that for me. It would blow 22 knots for about
15 minutes and then only 8-12 knots for the next 5 minutes. Sure it
would have been nice with a constant 22 knots, but my arms would have
been completely burned after 4 hours.
My rig was my Starboard Carve 161 Litre board with my 7.5m sail.
It was just me, Jeff from Jasper and Tony from Jasper. We had a blast
with some great planing conditions. There were a couple of times that
it was all I could do to harness the power of a gust on top of a gust.
I want to hear your stories of sailing this spring and/or what plans
you have in the future for sailing. I know that some of you just
returned from a trip to Hatteras, NC, and I want the details.
Happy sailing,
Creston

Excellent!
Four of us plan to arrive around 2pm Central Time. It's a 3 hour drive
from Louisville, but we gain an hour crossing into Central Time on the
way. Another is not sure if he can make it Friday night or Saturday. Of
course the wind will determine if sailing, or fishing is better, but we
hope to sail Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday and then leave
whenever.
The best locations that I scouted to launch are the point of land near
the KY Dam beach. You can park about 25 feet from the water, rig on
grass, and are immediately in the main lake. The second choice is
almost directly across the lake at Kentucky Lake Sails in Grand Rivers.
The better spot will be determined by the wind direction.
My mobile number is 502-386-3296. Cell phones do work in the areas
where we will be.
We would be glad to have you join us,
Creston

Hi Creston
Believe it or not I'm planning to go! I plan to travel down late Friday
afternoon/evening. Are you planning to have a place to meet by or near the lake
or contact by cell phone (if they work down there)? I'm still very rusty, so
won't be too amitious.

Hey fellow windsurfers and kite surfers,
I am planning a windsurfing weekend for October 21 through 23 on
Kentucky Lake in far Western Kentucky. I currently have 5 guys ready to
go. Hopefully the wind will be dependable enough that weekend. The
temperature should still be warm enough too for those that don't have
wetsuits.
I am quite familiar with the area since I grew up in Paducah, KY (about
25 miles from there). I have several possible launch places in mind
depending on the wind direction, and a good list of alternative
activities if the wind does not cooperate.
Some details of the weekend include...
Launch Sites:
* Boyd's Landing on Lake Barkley
* KY Lake Sails, Grande Rivers, KY
* KY Dam public beach point, Gilbertsville, KY
* Moss Creek camp ground in Land Between the Lakes
Alternative Activities:
* Mountain biking
* Tennis
* Fishing
* Touring Land Between the Lakes
* Golf
Food Possibilities:
* Willow Pond Restaurant (Exellent fried catfish, hush puppies and
fries)
* The Pelican Restaurant (The best southern breakfast available)
* Lic's Ice Cream
* Mr. B. B. Que (Great Western Kentucky Bar BQ)
* Picnic at the water's edge
Lodging:
I will be staying in my Dad's cabin near Lake Barkley with four
other guys, but the area has many lodges, hotels, and camp sites. The
rates are cheap this time of year too. I can help if anyone needs more
info regarding lodging.
Kentucky Lake is a 3 hour drive from Louisville, and well worth the
drive. Some of us will be leaving on Friday, but even if you can only
come for one day, it would be great to have you there.
If anyone is interested let me know so I can get you more details.
Hope to meet more of you there,
Creston

It looks like hurricane Ophelia is giving Cape Hatteras some really big
winds. I hope that some come our way soon. I am certainly ready for the
fall windy season.
I did sail on Labor Day weekend on Lake Barkley, but the wind was just
ok. I did meet a windsurfer near the Kentucky Dam Beach. He was just
coming off the water, and he lives close by. He just learned to
windsurf this year. It's good to see some new interest in that area.
Take care,
Creston

Since hurricane Katrina created such a disaster down south, Tony
Duncan, Jesenko, and I tried to even the score on this past Tuesday.
Tony was at Patoka Lake Beach before noon with an ok breeze, and the
wind almost died completely when Jesenko and I showed up around 12:30.
We rigged our 7.5 sails anyway and sailed a bit when it picked back up
to about 7-10 knots. I had not been on the water for two months, so I
was just glad to be out there.
After about 45 minutes, the wind lessened again and we took a break.
Jesenko went to shore to do some equipment experiments while Tony and I
floated on our boards off shore and chatted for about 20 minutes. We
gave up and went to shore. Tony decided to take a nap in his van while
Jesenko and I relaxed under one of the pavilions.
Jesenko said that he checked the web just before he left home and it
said not much wind until 7:00 PM. After another 30 minutes it was 4:30.
I told Jesenko that I would give it another 15 minutes to do something
or I was leaving.
After 15 minutes, I figured I was about ready to leave, but since the
board was rigged and at the waters edge I wanted to just play around a
bit more before packing. The wind was about 10 knots at this time. As I
played around the wind began to build. After 15 minutes I reached
planing speed. Tony and Jesenko walked swiftly down the beach and it
was great sailing with a plane on every run for the next two hours. We
came off the water at about 7:30. Within 20 minutes, the wind increased
to the next level and was blowing about 25 knots.
It was a great day and the light rain was actually enjoyable all day.
We all wore some type of neoprene accessory, either just a wetsuit top,
bottom, or a shorty. It did not look or feel like August at all. An
excellent day to begin the thought of the coming fall winds.
Happy sailing,
Creston

CP, i can't sail today.. that work thing.. but Tony Duncan may also be at
Patoka.. likely launching from the beach in the park on a north wind.. looks
like staying dry is not an option... good luck.

Remnants of Hurricane Katrina are heading our way. I plan to go to
Patoka Lake tomorrow (Tuesday) for the day. I plan to arrive there
around 12 noon (Louisville time) and sail the afternoon.
The forecast at this time says 15 MPH gusting to 26 for the afternoon
with possible thunderstorms. I won't sail in lightning, but I have no
problem with rain.
Q. Would anyone else like to join me?
The wind will be from the North, so Jackson Ramp will be a bit tricky.
I may try launching from the small parking area that juts out from the
road that goes from the beach to Jackson's Ramp. This is the main road
that passes several boat ramps and crosses several inlets of the lake.
I just can't remember the highway number at this time.
Q. Has anyone tried this launch spot before, and is it suitable.
I hope someone was able to enjoy the wind this past weekend.
