Mike,
Wow! That's quite a quiver.
I tried out one of the Ezzy sails in Florida a couple of weeks ago. It
was really nice, and the local shop raved over them. It was a 5.4m
sail. It really had a great shape.
Since you mentioned that the 118 liter board is your big board. I am
curious. How much do you weigh (if that's not too personal :^) )?
I am trying to unlearn some of my old school techniques and learn some
of the new ones for my newer EQ. Being a competitive racer back in the
early '80's, I could pinch high speed out of those long boards, but my
newer wide board with all the bullet proof materials requires new
techniques. I weigh 191 pounds, and my 161 liter board feels like it
should be faster in lighter air (10-15 mph with a 7.5m sail), but I
think it is my old techniques getting in the way.

What is everyone out there using? My current quiver is...
Boards:
2004 Starboard Carve 161, 161 liter
1984 Tsunami custom fiberglass short board (a semi-sinker for 140
pounder, but sinker for my 190)
1983 Mistral Competition Light regatta board (needs work)
Sails:
2004 Gaastra Pilot 7.0m
1983 Gaastra Power Head 5.7m
1985 North Sail Mylar 3.2m
Mast:
2004 FIberspar QuickTip 60/40 carbon fiber
Chinook mast base and extension
Boom:
2004 Chinook Giant Slalom
Wish List:
I would like to sell my Tsunami short board and purchase a larger board
that is at least 200 liters for those lighter wind days. Maybe the
Mistral Prodigy like I recently tried in Florida.
Warmer days ahead,
Creston

Hey gang,
I had planned to go windsurfing on Saturday, but the weather was not in
my favor. I did the family thing on Easter but kept watching the
forecast and it looked promising. Finally at 3:30, I was free of
responsibilities and was able to sneak away for a short session. I knew
the sun would not set until 7:00, so I went to Patoka Lake, but I did
not hit the water until 5:30. The wind was great and kept getting
better! I would say it was 15 gusting to 25. I sailed for about 70
minutes. I used my 7.0m sail, but could have easily used my 5.7m and
also had a blast. I am now feeling more comfortable on my newer board
with big speed. The forecast said rain all day and 11 gusting to 31. It
did not rain until I was taking off my drysuit after de-rigging. It was
my best day yet! The wind was out of the NE, so it was pretty clean air
coming all the way across the lake. The whitecaps were also happening,
but made tacking a bit tricky. I prefer jibing, but am not so
consistent in high winds. When I drove away at 7:10, it was getting
dark and some mighty huge winds with lightning started brewing. I had
adrenalin kicking the whole way home.
I never felt cold, but my fatigued hands chilled out a couple of times.
I now have a set of the latex dishwashing gloves for next time. The
suggestion of using those was from Jesenko the last time we went.
Hope to see you soon,
Creston

Welcome, and glad to hear that you are moving to the area.
I was windsurfing 8 out of 10 days back during 1981-1984 and then went
to college and the water was not as convenient. I went less during the
next 2 years, but then only went once in the past 18 years. I just
started windsurfing again last fall.
Here in the Kentucky/Indiana area, the weather can be fairly
unpredictable.
WIND CONDITIONS:
"Typically" our best months for wind are October through May with winds
from 0-27 knots (0-6 Beaufort). We may have these conditions during the
months of June-September, but they will not be often and usually
associated with a thunder storm.
TEMPERATURE CONDITIONS:
The most comfortable air temp is "Typically" from May through September
for non wetsuit sailing. Drysuits or thick wetsuits can be necessary
for December through March. With that being said, 3 weeks ago the air
was 64 degrees (F) and sunny, but the water on Patoka Lake was probably
45 degrees. Water temperatures differ some depending the body of water.
Some are spring fed and stay much colder, but most are from runoff.
Basically the weather in our area is pretty whacky, but I like that. I
certainly adds an excitement to the sport, and the weather watching can
easily become an obsessive hobby.
LOCATIONS:
In Evansville, you will have a few places to choose. There is the Ohio
River, but be careful with barge traffic, seasonally swift currents,
dangerous debris at times, and dirty air (wind that is shifty in
direction and intensity due to obstacles in path such as land terrain,
trees, buildling, etc.) I have just discovered Patoka Lake in Southern
Indiana. It is a 70 minute drive for me from Louisville, and probably
an 80 minute drive from Evansville. It is an incredibly beautiful lake
with a great sandy beach for launching during the fall, winter and
spring. I say this because during the summer season of Memorial Day
through Labor Day, we are not allowed to launch from the beach, so a
boat ramp on the opposite shore is preferred.
GEAR:
I personally have a 161 liter wide board that I think is a bit small
for my 190 pound frame. It kicks in a nice breeze, but for an
all-a-rounder lacks in the light air with my 7.0 miter sail. I also
have a small short board that I will probably sell soon. It used to be
a semi-sinker for me when I was 140 pounds, but now is a full sinker
for me. I would like to have an additional board that is at least 200
liters for the lighter days, but I am heavier than you. My sail quiver
includes three "useable" sails; 3.2m, 5.7m, 7.0m
OTHERS:
I have recently discovered that Louisville has at least 16 active
windsurfers that know the others exist. I am not sure about Evansville,
except for Kenny Dilger who is also on this list is from Evansville. He
is into kitesurfing and windsurfing.

Hi,
I will move this summer to Evansville. I would like to retake WS after
3 years (ouch! too long) without touching water. I saw your webpage
(thanks for creating it). I have a few questions,
- Conditions: best months, water temp, etc.
- Wind: Force (beatfort)
- Gear: volume recommended, sails sizes that suit better (I am 175lb,
I've used 5.5 and 7.3 before with a 150l board, F3-5 winds)
- Places to sail around Evansville. I thought first about the river,
but I don't know anything about it (safety, places to sail, polution,
traffic, access...)
Thanks
Hey gang,
My wife (Cindy) and I returned from Clearwater, FL last night. I had
some good winds, but the sun was not seen during the period between
last Sunday's sunset and Friday morning's sunrise. We also had
scattered showers for the most part. I was really kicking on a few
times out there with nice winds, but Cindy was not as content since the
beach was too cloudy, rainy, and/or chilly to enjoy. My wetsuit was
necessary even when not in the water.
I did have the opportunity to try a Mistral Prodigy board. It is a big
board (235 liters), but has the capability to really take off when the
wind kicks. It seems to be a great board, especially if you only have
one board and are not guaranteed the perfect sailing conditions.
All in all it was a great week for me, but just an o.k. week for Cindy.
Best regards,
Creston

Hey Kenny!
Glad you joined the group, and glad to hear that you are into
kitesurfing. I have not yet attempted kitesurfing yet, but some day it
would be neat.
From my limited knowledge, I would have to say the Lake Patoka in
Southern Indiana would be your best bet. It has a wonderful beach that
would make for a great launching area. I am in Louisville, and think
that you are probably closer than I am, or about the same at 1:15
travel time. I went there for the first time a couple of weeks ago, but
I could give you directions if you like.
Do you windsurf also?
I hope to be able to go sailing at some point this coming Easter
weekend.
Take care,
Creston

Michael,
Thanks for joining the group, and welcome. I had a pretty scary day in
December sailing from Cox Park with overwhelming current, waves, wind,
barges and debris, so I now prefer to travel to non-current water.
Congrats on your first day out in '05, even if it was abbreviated due
to the water temp.
Yes, Jesenko and Ron both pointed out Jackson Ramp across the lake. I
look forward to launching from there some day. I was thoroughly
impressed by the nice beach where we launched, and it certainly the
perfect place to beach start.
I started this list because I just knew there had to be other
windsurfers around, but how to connect was the issue. I tried searching
the web with the following keywords: windsurfing, Kentucky, Indiana,
Louisville, sailboarding, boardsailing, but I found nothing. Since I
couldn't find anyone through the web, I created the "Windsurfing
Kentucky" webpage and this YahooGroup so that maybe someone would find
me. It is now working, and hopefully we can all meet some new friends,
share our windsurfing experiences, find new places to sail, discuss
equipment, and not have to sail alone.
I hope to sail with you soon,
Creston

Creston et al,
This is my first contribution to this group.. I'm a windsurfer from
Louisville who regular sails the Ohio from Cox Park and Patoka
Lake. Glad to hear folks got out last Sunday. I have sailed many
times with Jasper Ron (& Tony) at Patoka. I sailed from Cox Park
Sunday afternoon from about 3-4pm.. wind & air temps were very nice,
but water was too freakin cold.. so my first sailing day of 05 was
abrieviated.
Patoka is one of my fave places to sail.. a suggestion: when the
wind is coming out of the south (SE, SW etc), launch from the
Jackson ramp area on the north side of lake. You usually have to
work upwind to get out the cove, but expect on-shore winds to rock
as soon as you get out of the shadow.. no shlogging to get back.
It's great to find out there's other sailors around these parts..
hope to see you on the water soon.
Warm winds, Michael Price

Wow! This past Sunday was an excellent windsurfing day at the beach on
Patoka Lake. I was planning to go to Taylorsville Lake, but when
Jesenko asked me to go to Patoka Lake, I thought that sounded like a
good idea. I had never been there, but I will certainly go there again.
The conditions were a sunny 63 degrees with 10-30 MPH winds from the
SW. When Jesenko and I arrived, a fellow by the name of Ron from Jasper
was already sailing. It was gusty, but the conditions were excellent,
and well worth the extra drive from Louisville.
Jesenko used a fairly thick wetsuit and said that we was fine
temperature wise. Ron had what he called a "wet drysuit", I think
because it leaks, and he was warm also. I debated between my wetsuit
and drysuit and finally decided on the drysuit. I ended up in the water
more than usual, mainly due to new harness lines, so I was glad I used
the drysuit. We sailed from 1:30 until about 4:45. I thought Patoka
Lake was an enchanting place. I also started my spring tan with some
sun on my face.
I hope to see the rest of you soon. If you join the WindsurfKY
YahooGroup it will be easier to communicate and find out when and where
people are windsurfing.
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/windsurfky/
It is freezing today, but there are certainly warmer days on the way.
Take care,
Creston

Shaun,
The conditions look great! The rain should stop after 1:00 PM, and the
winds will be the best between 2:00 and 6:00. I will see you there
around 1:00 pm. It takes me 45 minutes to get there, and I estimate it
will take you 35 minutes.

I also realized later last night that to make the map link I emailed
you yesterday show you what you need, you will need to click on the
"Large size" and click "Update" under it.

Here is a map to get to the Possum Ridge Boat Ramp (you will enter the
map at the top right on highway 53 going South)...
http://terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?T=2&S=14&Z=16&X=204&Y=1316&W=3
From Frankfort
Go West on I-64
Go South on Highway 53 (Exit 35) (Travel 6.2 miles)
Go West on Highway 44 (the buildings at this intersection are about 3
meters from the road, turn right) (Travel 5.4 miles)
Go East on Highway 248 (this is at the stop sign at the divided
highway, turn left)
Go over the bridge, and at the top of the hill you will see the sign
for the Taylorsville Lake Boat Ramp on the right. (approx. 1 mile)
Turn right at the sign and follow this road all the way to the boat
ramp (approx. 1 mile)
I will be the one with the windsurf on top of the car.

At this point the forecast says 10 mph with gusts to 25. Since it says
it will be a NNW wind, the Possum Ridge Boat Ramp is the better launch
site in my opinion, so we can get a little cleaner air.
At this point, arriving a little after 1:00 sounds good. Since the
Accuweather.com website only gives hourly conditions 36 hours ahead, we
may want to wait until Saturday evening to engrave that time, but the
afternoon is typically better. Our high will be 59, so the wetsuit may
be the way to go.

Taylorsville lake would be better for me and Monday would be fine, given the conditions will be favourable as well. What time will you be there and which launcing point would you suggest? Thanks for the suggestion.

Shaun, I will be windsurfing on Presidents' Day. The forecast is for 51 degrees and 15 mph winds gusting to 27. Would you like to go? I have recently found a few other windsurfers around Louisville. I have asked them to go, but don't know yet. If it is just me or you and me, then Taylorsville Lake is fine, but if we get a larger group, then maybe Patoka Lake in Indiana would be worth it. I hear it is much nicer since it is more of a round lake the winds are cleaner.
I went yesterday (Wednesday) on Taylorsville Lake and had an excellent session. It was 15 mph gusting to 20 with sunshine. With my drysuit, I was breaking a sweat out there. :^)

Shaun,
Yes, it would be great to meet at Taylorsville Lake. I either go to the
Taylorsville Lake Marina boat ramp or the Possum Ridge Boat Ramp,
depending on the wind direction. Sorry you did not have any wind when
you went there. You really have to watch the weather forecast in these
central states to have any idea of wind speed and direction.
The forecast for today is 15-25mph with gusts up to 30mph. That sounds
nice, but I have to work today. I try to windsurf at least once every
10 days. Since I am a freelancer, I can often find time during the
week, but weekends work also.
When I started getting back into windsurfing last August, I went to
Paducah, KY (where my parents live and where I lived until I went to
college), to get my old gear and get it into shape. It took some
serious cleaning to get the old Mistral Competition light Division I
racing board ready. My old shortboard, a custom fiberglass Tsunami
semi-sinker was in much better shape, but I knew It would be a while
before I would be ready for it again.
My first time out with it in September was good, but toward the end of
the session in the Ohio River I broke the boom with the best gust of
the day. Now I know why they call it "a wishbone boom".
My second time out was in October after purchasing a new boom. It was a
great day on the Ohio.
My third time out was blowing 30-35mph with some good size waves on the
Ohio River. I sailed about 100 feet when I broke my old aluminum mast.
That was depressing.
My next time out was with a complete brand new board and rig. I went on
the Ohio River and the wind was big, the waves were big, the current
was fast, and the debris was plentiful. My arms lasted to the other
side of the Ohio River. I fought it for about 30 minutes, but just had
no more strength or stamina left. When I tried to rest on my board, the
current was taking me at about 7 miles an hour. I finally gave up and
de-rigged. I ended up at a barge facility and had to call my wife to
get me.
That is the main reason I currently have been going to Taylorsville
Lake. That last day in the Ohio River gave me a bit of a scare in
regards to the current. I will wait until I have re-tuned my skills
before sailing there again.
I would love to have some company on the water. I have typically gone
alone, but only because I don't know anyone else. Also, growing up
around Kentucky Lake in western Kentucky was a perfect place to
windsurf, but I was going for about two years alone before any of my
friends learned.
Creston
Thanks for the reply and the advice....I thought I was the only windsurfer in Kentucky until I saw your website, which is excellent by the way. I did windsurf on Taylorsville lake two years ago but there wasn't much wind! I have an aging Bic Samba with a 5.7 sail (I think!) and I have been windsurfing on and off for about 20 years....but i'm a bit rusty since I came to Kentucky. I've only been out twice in the two year's we've been here. Windsurfing on the English Channel was exciting....lots of wind and surf! It would be great to meet up on Taylorsville Lake one weekend (wind permitting). For safety reasons I prefer not to be the only person out on the water. I'll send you an email in the next week or so, to see if the long range forcast shows anything promising. In the meantime, I need to dust off my gear and check it's all working and see if I can get into my dry suit!.
Happy Windsurfing

Hey Shaun, It's nice to meet you.
I have not had the opportunity to visit Cave Run Lake. I have found that the easiest way to launch in most lakes is by going to one of the public boat ramps. I suggest finding a brochure about Cave Run Lake from a visitors center or gas station in the area. The brochure should show boat ramps and roads to get to them. You can visit TopoZone to get map images of the area by visiting http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=38.1175&lon=83.53333
I have been going to Taylorsville Lake which is between Louisville and Lexington off I-64. That's fairly close to you isn't it? What type of equipment do you have, how long have you been windsurfing and what are the sailing conditions in the English Channel?
I was big into windsurfing back in the 1980's, and then went off to college and got busy with
life. Last year I decided to get back into it, and really enjoy it once again. I just started this YahooGroup to find others like yourself. I know that there are at least 5 windsurfers here in Louisville, but I have only met 2 of them so far.
I went yesterday at Taylorsville Lake with my new drysuit. It was my first time to see ice crystalizing on the sail. It is quite beautiful to windsurf while it is snowing.
Cheers, Creston
