Very sad news indeed. My most sincere condolences to his family and friends.

While we were all enjoying the great wind and waves all over this country this weekend, it is truly tragic news to hear of the passing of Fintan Hoare in Kerry on Saturday.

I know little details as to what happened, only that he was windsurfing in Banna in small swell and nice wind, and was found hours later 6 miles further up the coast in Ballyheigue.
There is speculation of his diabetes possibly causing him a problem whilst enjoying his sport to the fullest, but we may never know what happened.

What I do know is that Fintan was a superb sailor & surfer, one of the local Kerry crew who could brave the best conditions.
I remember him from a few of the competitions way back, but mostly from seeing his happy face when the wind & waves were rolling in Brandon Bay.  I will always remember him this way.

I just wanted to let people on these forums know (in case you hadn't heard), and to publicly express my condolences to Fintan's family.
Also to his friends in Kerry, and to those who were windsurfing with him (a few of whom are on this forum and you would know) - as they spent many hours frantically searching for him in vain.   Graham Kelliher from Tralee (E&D marine), who was one of Fintan's good friends (and mine) for 25 years, was the unfortunate person to find Fintan's body some 4 hours after he went missing.

R.I.P Fintan, you will be missed.

And please remember, be safe out there.
Oisín.

Hey,

My friend is looking for an 85ltr wave or freestlye-wave board. If you have
anything that might be of interest please give him a shout at ronan dot hunt @
ucdconnect dot ie ( No spaces and the dots are . blady blah) Thanks.

Also... whoever's still thinking about looping this weather i highly recommend
Oisin's course. We had a cracking weekend's sailing both days in Dollymount this
weekend and all who went man..ed and woman..ed up and went for a few. Really
really recommend it. And thanks to everyone who was out yesterday. It was
awesome! Roll on tomorrow's wind and strike!

Hi jbb,

There are lots of good spots around Sligo for windsurfing.  Rosses point is probably the most popular  ( I was out windsurfing there myself with a 5 sq.mn on the last Sunday in October ) , but as others have said there are also places like Streedagh, Strandhill, Mullaghmore etc.   Launching from Rosses Point you can sail out towards the waves at the Lighthouse, over to Lissadell, or go for tide against wind in the channel....obviously depending on conditions.  Its safest to stay along the beaches though.

Hi
I lived in Strandhill previusly and windsurfed the beach frequently.
Its not easy because the large sand dune blocks southerly wind and westerly is
very onshore
Very tricky at high tde but can be great at low to mid tide in a sw.
The offshore sand bar to the left is fab and worth sailing to but not alone if
big!
Rig behind the Strand bar.
Streedagh is best if the waves are huge or the wind is onshore at Strandhill.
Have fun
Guy

Hi,
My kit is proving too large.
My smallest sail is 5'4 and I'm novice so it pulls me all over the shop in a strong breeze. I need something small to build up my capicity.
Anyone got something like a 3'6 for sale, in good nick, cheap?
Thanks.
Gerard.

You'd probably be better off with a 4.5 as the jump down from a 5.4 to a 3.6 is massive.. Just a thought..

Hi Oisin,
Sounds good and I'd like to try it. I've tried a few loops but need a kick in the arse to get them sorted. Can you let me know the details - cost, times and probable location. I'll see if any of my mates will join me also. Thanks.

Hello folks,

with the great forecast for this week, I'm looking at putting together a loop clinic, going on this weekend in Dublin.
If the forecast changes for Dublin, we can look at another location on the west coast, but Dublin is the easiest for everyone to travel to... and you dont need 8m waves to learn to loop.  In fact, you dont need waves at all.

Forecast looks great for both Sat and Sunday, so if you want to finally take the handbrake off, and cure your forward looping demons... this is the one for you.
It's always good with a bunch of like minded people, so why not take the bull by the horns?

If you are up for it or want more information, you can contact me on ir777 at hotmail dot com

Important Notice for all IWA Members

Re:  Official Scoring of IWA Wave Events

At the recent AGM in Belmullet, Sunday 25th October 2009 a question was made from the floor asking what rules the IWA was running their wave championship under - for example to discards. The IWA committee has also received an objection to the results of the 2009 Belmullet Wave event.

On further investigation by the committee into the previous rules, formally and officially adopted by the IWA, we now confirm that the original 2009 Belmullet Wave Event results are incorrect. The official scoring for Wave and Freestyle events was brought about from work which commenced after a motion was passed at the 2003 IWA AGM. This motion was proposed by Oisin VanGeldern and seconded by Jeff Cochrane. Following the acceptance of the motion at the 2003 AGM, a sub-committee developed a word document titled “Scoring for National Wavesailing and Freestyle Championships”.

This document was produced by the then Secretary Mr. Peter Gallagher. The document which was published on the old IWA website and can be found at: http://www.sailing.ie/dynamic/pdf/windsurf/Scoring%20for%20National%20Championships,%20Oct%2006.doc

Further notice to this document was made on the IWA website. This can be found at: http://web.archive.org/web/20071119055504/www.sailing.ie/windsurf/inside/default.asp?pageId=308

The official IWA document was followed correctly to produce the 2006 and 2007 IWA results as could be seen on the old website. During this period the results were overseen by Peter Gallagher. All this information (Old Results) will be transferred to the new website in due course.

A problem arose in the 2008 season. Due to the lack of the excellent direction of Peter Gallagher someone developed a new incorrect event results sheet for the events. This sheet incorrectly gave a different discard system. This error was never raised by the competitors of the wave series and so no action was taken.

We cannot figure out why the formats of the 2007 results were not followed. These changes were never adopted by the IWA and therefore the results from the 2008 season are also deemed incorrect – although major overall placing is not affected.  We will investigate this further and reproduce the 2008 results according to the official IWA rules (i.e. according to the document mentioned above) in due course.

In summary, as a result of the historical inspection into IWA rules regarding discards it has been deemed necessary to review the results of the 2008/2009 IWA wave competition at Belmullet as previously the event results had not been compiled with discards in accordance with offical IWA rules.

With correct IWA discards applied the top three Men’s Gold Fleet  2009 Belmullet wave event placings are now as below.

First - Finn Mullen

Second - Oisin Van Geldren

Third - Alex Dugan

Wave Championship placings for the top three Men’s Gold Fleet after correct IWA discards are applied are unchanged and remain as below.

First - Finn Mullen

Second - Oisin Van Geldren

Third - Alex Dugan

A full set of IWA approved and revised Belmullet event and wave championship results will be issued in due course. Please update the new official results on any published media.

This matter has further highlighted the importance of having people responsible for each discipline. On a more positive note Dan Gardiner and Katie McAnnena have taken over responsibility for the 2010 IWA WAVE SERIES. We will ensure that the first task is to clarify and reproduce a 2010 document explaining the IWA WAVE SERIES rules. We will also ensure that all event organisers are informed of the existing rules.  Any changes to the existing rules will have to be adopted according to the formal procedures.

On behalf of the IWA, I would like to apologise to all competitors and event organisers, who have been affected by this error. We are working to ensure a situation like this will not arise again. We would also ask competitors to keep a closer eye on event results and report any queries directly to a member of the team responsible for that discipline.

Both the Slalom and Wave sub-committee will each publish a document explaining all important info relating to the upcoming 2010 season well in advance of the first event.

Any queries on this notice should be directed to Danny Mulryan – IR555@...

Yours in Sport

Danny Mulryan
