Does anyone have recent experience flying windsurfing kit on Aerlingus?
The baggage booking option seems to limit me to one item of sports equipment under 15 kg and doesn't have a windsurf option, I could pitch it as a surf board but am wondering how I will get on being over weight.
I just flew home from Lanzarote with Aer Lingus and I was in the same predicament. When I was booking the flight I went through all the baggage stuff too and it says you can book a surf board for €30 but further down the page it says you cannot prebook windsurf gear.
I was thinking of booking 3 bags on cos I had my clothes bag plus my gear which was a quiver and a double board bag. In the end I just booked my clothes bag (which can weigh up to 20kgs).
It was crazy, when I got to the check in they were stinging everyone for being even 2kgs over the 20kgs for their clothes so I was getting worried. Before I packed I made sure my bag was less than 20kgs, always good to get off on the right foot! Plus it's really important your equipment doesn't weigh over 32kgs per bag as that's the absolute limit the handlers are allowed to carry and if they weigh it and you're over you could be in a serious pickle! So don't be tempted to overload one bag, just take 2.
Anyways, I'm so used to taking gear on flights, I've taken over a dozen recently! The usual applies, always try and check in with the soundest loking person. I know that sounds ridiculous but in Lanzarote I was in the queue for this older lady and she was stinging everyone for excess so I jumped ship to the next queue to a young girl who didn't seem to care. Also, try and make your gear look as small as possible, like stack it ontop of itself! and most importantly, never go up with a guitly look on your face and never get angry or go on the defensive, they'll really screw you over when they know you're pissed off!
Just say you have 'one set' of windsurfing gear, try never explain exactly what's in the bag cos it sounds colossal! And lastly, unless it's free or really really cheap, never accept the first price charge they offer you, haggle the hell out of them, but always with a smile on your face!
So, long story short, I got to the check-in at Aer Lingus and I did all the above and got it on for FREE! Pretty unusual these days but sweet as. In Maui this year and all the times before they've asked for anything up to $400 for the quiver (4 sails,2masts,1boom) and double board bag and I've never had to pay over $200, you just have to chance your arm! In Oz this year it was different, they're really sticky on gear, so when there's no getting around it always check the ariline's policy like you did and if it looks like there's no way around it, then prebook it on!
Phew, hope that wasn't too long winded, I could write a book about it at this stage!
Have a great holiday, and remember golfers get their gear on for free so why the hell shouldn't we!??!!

Just Came back from Gran Canaria with Aer Lingus Last night. I had to pay 40 euro per bag which ispretty decent. Plus they were out before the caracell had even started up

Sellling the following equipment, making room for new toys
Boards:
2009 RRD Twin 82, winner of Boardseeker twinser test, incredibly
loose and forgiving, takes form 5.5 to 3.7 comfortably, very well
behaved. - 650euro
2008 RRD Wave Cult 85, very nice wave board for lighter wind/heavier
sailors, works in all conditions from onshore to down the line (it
handled Garwilliams Point in Kerry quite well for example!) - 450euro
Hi Folks,
Forecast for tomorrow says there might be some wind, anyone thinking of a sail,
could text me on 086 179 1198. Dollymount or Poolbeg, I would think. Booterstown
even, earlier on in the day.
Byeee,

SO is it windy out in Dublin Bay or Malahide.
The Rush weather station is giving 25 knot readings, but this site oftern seems
to give high readings.
Dun L is 14 knots, but I know can be sheltered in a southerly.
Bray is also only reading 10 knots. Not sure where that one is exactly.
The very useful Dollymount one has not worked for ages.
Dublin airport is 19knots, but that is not "live"
Are there any other weather stations online.
Is there anyone with some first hand on-beach info. Am desperate to get a sail
but don't want to rek across town to find no wind in Malahide or Dollymount.
Thanks

Dublin Airport readings only ever have a delay of 1/2 hour max. Not much
considering all wind readings fluctuate. They're reliable but don't take into
account local variations.

I'm just in from a session on Rush beach - definitely no shortage of wind and it's actually quite consistent for a change! Was overpowered on a 5.5 and didn't have anything smaller - couldn't be much different on Dollymount.

I use the dublin airport readings quite a lot - they are good and i
know for example malahid estuary will be sheltered a fair bit in a west
to southerly so i allow for that.
i think its a question of measuring the nearest station against the
sailing spot you use with different wind directions and once you know
how it works then it can be very useful

Share your memories online with anyone you want anyone you want.
If you want to speedsail there it only really works in a north easterly so you
get the right angle on the speed strip to get some good speeds. Anything else
from the North is alright for sailing but North Easterlys are best

Last readings are from 8th July. There were no readings for a long time before.
Obviously it is broken, but just wondering if anyone knew if it was going to be
fixed. Do we and the kitesurfers need to do a whip around to get it fixed. It
was very handy when it worked.
What is the exact location? Is it on the beach or on the roof of the Pure Magic
shop?
