I have 4 kayaks for sale, JUNIOR RACERS TAKE PRIORITY! If the boats
don't sell to junior paddlers training for the Jr. World
Championships in July I'm happy to sell them to whoever wants them.
Prices do NOT include shipping. I'm leaving for Europe on the 10th
of June so act now or you'll have to wait till I return on the 26th
of June for me to ship the boat to you.
Boat number one; $1,925 Class 6 Zastera Dynamic.
red/orange/yellow/yellow fade. Carbon/Kevlar, air bags, adjustable
foot braces, seat, sticks, rock gaurds, boat bag. Excellent
condition. No leaks, no cracks, some scratches... of course it has
some scratches! I scraped it over some rocks! It's a Wildwater boat
after all. I raced it at the team trials in April. The boat is
located in Morgantwon West Virginia.
Boat number two; $1,625 Class 4 Zastera Dynamic.
red/organe/yellow/yellow fade. Carbon/kevlar, air bags, adjustable
foor braces, seat, sticks, rock gaurds, boat bag. Excellent
condition. No leaks, no cracks, some scrathes....of course it has
some scratches! It's a Wildwater boat after all. I trained in it
before the team trials. The boat is located in Seattle WA.
Boat number three; $1,625 Class 4 Zastera Clipper.
Carbon fiber deck (Black). Carbon/kevlar, air bags, adjustable foot
braces, seat, sticks, rock gaurds, boat bag. Excellent condition, no
cracks, no leaks, some scratches...of course it has some scratches!
It's a Wildwater boat after all and Rodney Rice used it for 3 or 4
days on whitewater and scraped over some rocks. The boat is located
in Seattle WA.
Boat number four; $800 top of the line Zastera from 2001, Savage 3000
Blue. Carbon/kevlar vacume bagged foam core, adjustable foot braces,
seat, sticks, rock gaurds, NO BOAT BAG. And because it never had a
boat bag the sun wrecked havoc on the resin, a common problem. I'll
recoat it for you. It has no cracks that have not been repaired and
does not leak. I used the boat in 2005 and 2006. I used it a lot
and took a lot of hits, it's a wildwater boat! What do you think
happened? It is fine for a training/racing boat and in better shape
than the red one I sold to Chara Whittemore for $600. She raced hers
at the Team Trials and on the Cheat. She won the Team Trials.
Caution: The Savage 3000 design suffers from what Rodney Rice very
accuratly described as "Missile Lock". The boat gets going in a
direction it wants and stays on that track. It is more difficult to
turn than a Dynamic or Clipper.

this used to happen to me. stretch out, take longer strokes, and like
everyone aid, dont grip the paddle, just cradle it.
however i'm a big proponent of using a lot of force with the top hand
during the stroke

Do you know any Jr. C-Boat Racers that should be petitioned on the 2007 USA Junior Wildwater World Championship Team. If so, read the article below, click on this link, and send me an email ASAP.
USA JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS KAYAK TEAM HAS BEEN SELECTED
Seven Slots on the Canoe Team Remain Open - Send Petitions ASAP.
May 6th - Durango, CO: With the conclusion of the Western Junior Team Trials, two things became very obvious. First, the USA will be well represented by our kayakers at the Junior World Championship and we should congratulate them. Second, we have a narrow widow of opportunity to recruit qualified racers for the C-boat classes (read on).
In the kayak classes, both the men's and the women's trials were extremely competitive at both the East and the West Team venues. As a result, we have fielded a full team that should stack up well if they continue to train hard.
In the canoe classes, C-1 racer Craig Adams is training hard and continues to improve. To date, he is the sole canoeist of the team. The remaining C-boaters in the USA are about to let a once in a lifetime opportunity to race at the World Championships on their home soil slip right through there fingers. USA Wildwater will allow for the 7 reaming open slots to be filled by petition through 5/31. For more information please see: http://www.usawildwater.com/news/2007/070204_bylaws_change.htm
Please congratulate the 2007 Junior World Championship Team:
K-1W
Tierney O'Sullivan - Roswell, GA
Sarah Kunz - Durango, CO
Laura Adams - Grand Junction, CO
Anna Pierotti - Durango, CO
Micki Reeves - Grand Junction CO (alternate)
Sarah Dodge - Boulder, CO (alternate)
K-1
Chan Jones - Franklin NC
Lucas Palko-Schraa (Durango, CO)
Nathan Hamm - Bethesda MD
Alex Dodge - Boulder, CO
Peter Lutter - Pittsburgh, PA (alternate)
Michael Turvey - Boulder, CO (alternate)
C-1
Craig Adams - Grand Junction CO
One remaining challenge for the 2007 Team is funding. If you are able to help or know someone that can contribute, please take a moment to click on this link: http://www.usawildwater.com/news/2007/070507_sponsor_help.htm
Stay tuned to USA Wildwater for your link to training, training camps, racing, and race results.

I find it very interesting that Sandra mentions the same method of relaxing the top hand that most k-1s used in the 80's and 90's and it works GREAT. The trick is to straighten up all of the fingers (except you thumb and index finger) on your top hand during the recovery part of the stroke. We use to joke that if if your pinky wasn't out you weren't relaxing your top hand.
A drill the Italians do to break the habit of overgripping the shaft is to grease it up. Try it... it's very hard to paddle at first ... but it is a neat drill to try.

Thanks for the help. I appreciate all the ideas. Hopefully, tonights workout will go a little better than my past few.
Also, relaxing your grip on the paddle with your top hand (the one that's not in the water) will give the forearm some rest during the stroke. Hold just enough to keep the paddle straight in the water. Try extending the fingers on your top hand when pushing through too.
And make sure all your muscles are warmed up before doing any hard efforts
I have some feldenkrais exercises to relax your
forearm that I could show you if you will be around
Memorial day weekend (they are a little complicated to
describe). I have had tendonitis issues with that arm
for many years and these exercises have helped
enormously.
In the meantime, make sure you are paddling on deep
water - shallow water and attainments are not good,
and using your back muscles is a premium.

For the past week I've been having troubles paddling.(besides the
issues I always have) I have been doing mostly flat water workouts
and attainments, which I have been doing in the past. My problem is
that I'll get about 15 minutes in and my forearm on my control side
will become so tight and cramped that I can barely hold on to my
paddle for the rest of the workout. I see that as a problem. If
anyone has any information on what may be causing this and possibly

A few souls gathered this past weekend at Barnum on
the North branch of the Potomac for an informal
training camp. We had beautiful weather with a minor
interruption for a thunderstorm, but the conditions
and the guaranteed water were ideal.
The theme of the camp was paddling with intensity, and
yet consistency, on rough water - a tough task on any
given day. On Saturday we worked on a sprint course
of under 2 minutes with fairly defined lines. The
course was ideal for video and timing, and everyone
showed improvement with whitewater technique. In
particular we were able to work on varying stroke
rates in order to obtain maximal acceleration and
speed. We ended up with a full run of the river,
doing leapfrog sessions in both flat and rough water.
After a full nights recovery we were joined by Middy
Tilghman who graciously shuttled us around and shot
some great video. As we had back in October, we
divided the race course into quarters and timed each
one, prior to racing and then comparing back to the
ideal times for each quarter. This also allowed us to
directly compare times to those taken in October
(http://www.usawildwater.com/news/2006/061005_NB_Training.htm),
as the water level was exactly the same. Colby Zebel
took the overall honors, but lost significant time
from his quarter times. Behind him was Chris "The
Magic Bloater" Norbury, only 13 seconds ahead of
Hollie "One Ring to Bind Them" Noble. Notably Hollie
posted this time with a huge crack in her boat patched
with duct tape because she "forgot" she had a full
repair kit on hand. Hollie was 22 seconds faster than
her time in October, a 3% improvement, and she will
surely catch the Magic Bloater target soon. Hollie
also demonstrated significant consistency, as she was
almost spot on the cumulative quarter times. Chrissie
Zeltner, our other racer, actually beat her quarter
times, and improved enormously throughout the weekend.
We can't wait to get Chrissie out in a composite
boat.
Overall we had a great time and everyone, myself
included, felt much better in the boats on the course
as the weekend went on. We will convene again on
Memorial Day weekend, when we will also do some timed
runs and video to work on rough water technique. We
may also be able to get some speed versus heart rate
versus lines data using a heart rate monitor/GPS
system. Drop me a line if you are interested at this
address (mhc_antigen@...).

I appreciate the feedback that I received. It turns out that our Juniors are all tied up with school and/or work and our seniors are getting ready for Europe. We will reschedule this camp.
Also make sure you mark you calendars for a training camp in conjunction with the Jr Worlds that starts July 7th and runs up to the Jr Worlds! Maurizio Tognacci will be the head coach for the Training Camp and the Jr Worlds!

That sounds great Bob. I may be looking to utilize your services in the upcoming months. I'll let you know when I have some more info and we'll see if something can be worked out.
As part of my job I drive from my home in PA to NY, NC, TN and KY on
about an 8 week cycle. If you need to get a WW boat (yes even "C" boats,
I'm an equal opportunity transporter) delivered in this area I'll help
if I can. My schedule and routes are fairly flexible. Just pay my gas
for the extra miles.

Durango Race Report 5/5/07 We loaded the trailer for our trip to Durango with the Animas River at 3.300 CFS and climbing. While this was not yet an extremely high level, team members who were familiar with the Durango course through Smelter Rapid knew that this meant challenging paddling. By the time we got there late Thursday night, it had stopped raining, and the river was down somewhat when we went to begin our practice runs Friday. We checked in, completed our paperwork, had our boats, life jackets, and helmets inspected, and began training. We soon discovered that the river was at quite a manageable level, and the weather was quite pleasant. We practiced extensively on the bottom of the Classic Wild Water course, but only a couple of us had done runs through Smelter by the time the racers meeting came around at 4:30. We reworked the start order and were assigned bibs for the Classic Wild Water race the next day. (The classic
race is a 20 minute downriver race as distinct from the sprint which is between a minute and two minutes in length.) By that time we were quite exhausted and ravenous. We split up to go to our home stays where we all ate very well and got a good night's rest. We awoke Saturday to light sleety snow and an overcast day. The good news was that we had slept as long as possible, the river was continuing to go down with the cold weather, and our confidence was strong. We were able to gather at the Samuelson's where we changed into our river gear a few blocks drive from the put in. The race began on schedule at 11:00 am and proceeded as the weather went from partially sunny weather to snow and wind. Among the girls Mariah Colton came in fourth, and Alex Dodge was second with Michael Turvey fourth among the boys. Tyler Hinton was first in the C-1 class after rolling in Smelter with Will Palmer third. Although we had two swimmers, they finished
the race. Special recognition is due to Mac Kring who successfully ran the course as a beginner. Sarah Dodge kept her wits about her when she got off line on some rocks, but kept the boat up and finished with a respectable time. Laura Adams of Grand Junction won the girls race, but she had already earned a spot on the team at the Eastern Team Trials. Sarah Kunz of Durango was second, and Lucas Palko-Schraa of Durango won the boy's race and thereby earned spots on the U.S. Jr. Wild Water Team. Tyler Hinton is too young to race on the U.S. Jr. Wild Water Team, but the chief official for the Jr. world Championship personally invited him to be a forerunner. In a perfect world we would have done some slalom or sprint training at Smelter that afternoon. However, given the snow and mud we called it a day and went to see Spiderman 3. Durango White Water arranged a pizza social at Beaujo's where we refueled and enjoyed the company of the kids
with whom we were competing. If you didn't know better, it looked like a lot of kids from one big team hanging out. In reality there were four separate groups there. On Sunday, we were at Santa Rita park by 8:15 to rig boats and pick up our bibs, and the racer's meeting began at 9:00. The weather was partially sunny, but there was a chill in the air. The sprints through Smelter rapid began only minutes behind schedule. There were several swimmers, and our C-2s had a rough time of it swimming on both runs. However, Alex Dodge earned his spot on the U.S. Jr. Wild Water Team with a strong performance in the sprint race. Anna Pierotti of Durango also earned her spot on the team in the sprints. Two Alternate paddlers were selected for the U.S. Jr. Wild Water Team on the basis of combined percentages from the two races. Michael Turvey and Sarah Dodge earned these positions. It is worth noting that Mariah Colton was next in line after Sarah.
It is also worth noting that. because there are no C-2s and only one C-1 on the U.S. Team,(Craig Adams from Grand Junction who went to the Eastern Team Trial) it is possible to petition the Wild Water Committee for a place on the team. They want to have boats from all classes. Our C-2s did incredibly well given the short amount of time they have been training; they only need more time in the boat on flat water as well as white water. We had no sooner had the wild water awards and team selection announcements than we scrambled into our slalom boats and began the next race! There were no swimmers, and it was clear watching all our paddlers that they had grown considerably in technique, confidence, and inner strength as they now ran the slalom course. Kiwi Landry deserves recognition for two gutsy runs of which she can be proud. Our C-2s, John Borst, Stephan Ohlsson, Will Palmer, and Mariah Colton dried off then climbed into their slalom
boats to do some more racing. Alex Dodge took second and Michael Turvey fourth in K-1. Sarah Dodge took third in K-1W. Tyler Hinton took second, and Will Palmer took third in C-1. It was well after four by the time we had the trailer loaded and high time for dinner. These three days of training and racing were tremendous personal growing experiences as well as important athletic experiences whether one qualified for the U.S. Jr. Wild Water Team, or one merely looked inside oneself and found the mental and technical strength to compete on the premier slalom course in Colorado. We owe our hosts in Durango a tremendous debt of gratitude not only for organizing a great weekend of racing, but also for offering us home stays. The Peha's hosted Kiwi, Mariah, Sarah, Alex Dodge, and Ms. Fulton. The Palko-Schraas hosted Ravi, Michael, and Tyler. The Samuelsons hosted Dan, Will, John, Alex Tam, Dave Pitman, and Mr. Lord. We were
generously well fed, and our accommodations were very comfortable. Our athletes behaved themselves very well, and I had only positive, indeed glowing remarks about them from our hosts. I am proud that our athletes have a good reputation here in Durango and that we will be welcomed back here another year. USA Wildwater needs your help. With the Junior Worlds coming to the USA, 2007 is a pivotal year for Wildwater and we MUST find a way to finance both the Senior and Junior Teams.
While we have several areas that a person can sponsor, the most critical need is to be able to fund very modest low-cost housing for our teams like we have done the past two seasons. Team housing is critical because it helps our Team performance (by keep our athletes from having to camp out) and keeps our Team together and functioning as a Team.
So I am calling you for your help in supporting the Team housing for the Senior (World Cup) Team and the Junior (World Championship) Team. Other areas needing sponsorship are coaching and the performance fund (but feel free to sponsor any area). For the details, please see the 2007 budget at:

The easiest way to help us is to send your Tax Deductible Donation to the USA Wildwater Team at the address below. Checks should be made out to USA Canoe/Kayak (or USACK) and earmarked for Wildwater.
Please let me know your questions and thoughts.

I'm meeting Blake Sparks at 1pm at the WW putin on the Ocoee. Let me know if you want to join us.
Let me know if you want to do a plastic crusing boat run first to learn the WW lines. As always, I recommend using a wave hopper or beater boat on the Ocoee.

I hope to attend but I have just begun
working for NOC Instruction. As of now, I don’t know what my work
schedule will be for the 19th-20th, but will make an
effort to find out by next Monday and get that time off if at all possible.
I hope everyone is doing well.
