Those folks that have been hanging out with me know I have been acting differently lately. The reason is that I really hurt the heck out of my shoulder a few weeks ago and it has NOT gotten better.
I have been turning down runs on the Ocoee, wimping out of river trips in general, not taking practice runs, cutting workouts short.... and last but note least, I only paddled one class at Nationals. I even did not thow in one of my famous "cross bows" from the stern when we needed it the most.
Well it turns out that my high school coach "Pea Rooney" was wrong when he said pain is 98% mental. Fortunately I knew that and have attempting to be careful with my shoulder.
I confirmed today that I have a torn rotator cuff. It's big and bad enough that my only option to be a fully functional paddler again is to get surgery. I'm looking to schedule this in the next 3 weeks.
And a special thank you Rob Murphy for sticking with the plan of paddling C-2 at Nationals with his wounded warrior partner.

UG, Been there :( Mine was pre-paddling climbing related tear but the result was the same. I sure hope you have a great recovery and rehab - I chose a sports rehab and they were really focused on getting me back out there in my sport and not just rehab-ing me so I could open doors and get something down from the top shelf in my closet. So, if you have your choice of rehab facilities I would take a look at several, they can really be a great help to get you back quickly but safely to where you want to be.
Good luck and keep us posted!

In my 30 year paddling carreer... I've rehabbed dislocations/ligament tears twice. Now I'm in the position of hoping my cuff is not ripped up too bad for the surgeon to get it tacked down and sewn together well enough for me to rehap. That being said... I will do my part (and take my time).
