First of all, I would encourage everyone to go to the USA Wildwater Nationals that are being hosted by Zoar Outdoors in Charlemont, MA.  Zoar and the USA Wildwater Committee (Seth Eisner) have worked really hard to come up with a WEEK long National celebration and Wildwater event.  A great links for information is:
http://www.usawildwater.com/news/2008/080609_nationals.htm

A personal challenge for me is that I'll only have time to race at national events instead of being there the whole time (I'm taking off almost 3 weeks for paddling as it is and Lynn and are celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary with a week out west too). Otherwise I would be there for the full week+ of events (I promise).

I'm cashing in frequent flyer miles on Delta who has me routed on Continental and have a scheduled arrival time of 5:20 PM. Thursday, July 31st at Hartford CT (Bradley). I depart Monday 8/4 at 9:30 a.m.

Let me know if I should link up with your travel schedule?

And most importantly, I hope to see  you there.

This is what may have happened to JP's boat.

Wave Hoppers are a shortened version of a racing Wild Water kayak. The

last year at the sprint Nationals I bought two paddles from Brasca.
One is a 217 – 222 adjustable length with the mid size blade that I
bought to use for distance Surf Ski races. The other is a 217 – 222
adjustable length, with Max blade (larger but not the largest they
have) that I bought to use for races up to 1,000 meters.

They are nearly new, I'm only selling them because I'm really only
using my shorter WW paddles.

They cost about $400 each when new, I'll sell them for $285 each.

Thanks to the help of Jack Ditty, I have brought extra C-1 back from Europe to put into circulation and to get another c-1 on the water! So that means that I have an extra boat to sell.

Chuck, please run this ad:

C-1 for Sale: I have an extra Bala C-1 for sale to anyone that commits to training and/or racing on a semi regular basis. Contact John Pinyerd, jpinyerd@...
- Training boat - carbon kevlar/foam core. This is the boat that I raced at Team Trials last year and paddle/race on the Nanty/Ocee on a regular basis. There have been several repairs all above the water line behind the wings but the hull is still very clean below the water line and is water tight. ($725)
- Race Boat (cabon/kevlar hull, carbon deck). This is the world class race boat that I won Team Trails in and the Masters Worlds in 2006 and 2008 ($1425).

Greetings all.

Everybody please make note – the 2008 USA Wildwater National Championships are now less than two months away.  The week preceding this year's Nationals will also be replete with a variety of activities, clinics, and other interesting opportunities to race.  The race organizers are pulling out all the stops to make the 2008 US Nationals the best ever.

I will be publishing a comprehensive and complete schedule of all activities during Nationals Week in the very near future.  In today's posting, I'd like to introduce the major events that will comprise the 2008 Nationals Week.

The Races

There will be three distinct events.  Competitors may enter as many or as few as match their interests.  All three of the events will be organized by a race director and corresponding staff.

1) Sunday, July 27th.  Nationals Warm-Up Event.  This will take place on a 3-4 mile section on the "Gap" stretch of the Deerfield.  In addition to the normal rack of wildwater boat classes, there will also be a class for cruiser boats, and a class for plastic downriver boats, like Wavehoppers.  Even if you've never taken part in a downriver event, I encourage everybody who has a boat to give it a try.  It's a fun course, and it's not terribly difficult.

2) Wednesday/Thursday, July 30th/31st.  First inaugural Time Bomb Championship Event.  Entrants in the Time Bomb Championship must compete in two different races, on two differing (Gap) stretches of the river.  The first race will take place on Wednesday, and the second race will take place a day later.  For each entrant, the times for the two races will be combined.  The winner of the Time Bomb Championship will be the entrant most closely predicts his/her combined time.  That means you do not have to be fast to win.  And there will not be distinct boat classes.  You can paddle, and possibly win, with whatever type of boat you'd care to use.  Of course, entrants may not carry watches and stuff like that.  The 2008 Time Bomb Champion will be named at an awards BBQ on Thursday evening.

3) Saturday/Sunday, August 2nd/3rd.  The 2008 USA Wildwater National Championships.  Entrants must compete in three races spanning both days, and these races will take place on the Dryway stretch of the Deerfield.  Saturday's two sprint races will take place at Noon and 2:00PM, respectively.  Sunday's classic race will begin at Noon.  This event will not have distinct boat classes for cruiser and plastic boats.  The winner of this event will be named the 2008 US Wildwater National Champion.  That's a big honor.

Clinics and Training Sessions

Nationals Week will include 4 formal clinics which will be conducted by a set of Wildwater racing experts.  Two of the clinics will be geared toward wildwater novices, and I am hoping to be able to provide wildwater boats and/or Wavehoppers for the clinic attendees.  The other two clinics assume an audience experienced in wildwater racing.  The exact dates and times will be published in my next posting.  All of the clinics are open to anybody who cares to attend.

Additionally, current and past US Wildwater Team members will also be conducting informal training sessions on the river.  These on-river training sessions provide an excellent opportunity to better understand what wildwater racers focus on when racing.

Other Stuff

I don't know how this is going to work, but Monday night will be movie night.  Additionally, one of USA's first Olympic Whitewater Medalists, Jamie McEwan, will be hosting a reunion/nationals race dinner and social gathering on Saturday, August 2nd @ 6:30PM.  Anticipated admission is likely to be $11.

A few other Things to Know

1) Anybody wishing to compete in any of the three events will need to fill out the appropriate registration form.  And of course, each of the events has a modest entry fee.  At the moment, only the registration form for the Nationals is accessible at 2008 Registration Form.  Registration Forms for the other events should become available shortly.  Of course, the same set of Registration Forms will be available at the race sites, too.

2) Please address your lodging/camping needs soon.  Things are filling up quickly.  Lodging and camping information has already been compiled, and can be found by clicking here: Lodging and Camping.

3) As schedules stabilize, and other information becomes available, I will be posting here on this site.  This same information can also be accessed on the Zoar website at: Zoar 2008 US National Wildwater Championships.  I'll make every possible effort both construct and adhere to rational schedules.  But, stuff happens, so it's worth double-checking dates/times on occasion.

4) The 2008 Nationals Week will have many activities geared to several different audiences.  Regrettably, I suspect it will sometimes be confusing.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions and/or comments.

Yes, that's it. The A-F subcategories are age groups.

A = 35+
B = 40+
C = 45+
D = 50+
E = 55+
F = 50+

I am pleased to say that the USA went 5 for 5 ... in other words all 5 of our
athletes had trips to the podium.

Folks,

Psyched by those stories of raging rivers in Europe, or just by the thought of Nate Hamm paddling the Spindle gorge in Czech with a bunch of folks who can't give him directions because they don't speak English?  Well, fear not, there are some races coming up in the Mid Atlantic region that will keep you occupied.  The races are;

June 1st, North Branch Potomac, organized by Chrissy Zeltner (chrizee1@...).  A 10-13 minute classic course  with consistent whitewater and a sprint course that may be held head to head!

June 8th, rescheduled Little Falls race, organized by Hollie Noble (hobnob7j@...).  Another short classic course finishing with the big water at Little Falls!

June 14th, Tim Gavin Race on the Shenandoah (http://69.94.9.108/blog/?page_id=17), a great mass start race with a fantastic festival (one of the best!) afterwards.

Both the North Branch and Little Falls races will count for MADS points, and this may be an opportunity for Peter "not so gigantor when you put him next to Kurth Smithgall" Lutter to take back some initiative in the series from Colby "why am I always lacking motivation" Zebel.  Maybe even Geoff "I have a job, really, I do, really" Calhoun will make an appearance but I think asphyxia might be the result if you held your breath on that one.

I hope to see folks out, especially as the weather is finally warming up and a cracking Nationals is looming close on the horizon.

Cheers

Chris
