Chris- For me, I found the GPS more valuable as a flatwater
training tool than the heart rate monitor, which I never found
effective. Until my tape strap slipped and I lost it, I used a basic
Forerunner 101, which survived plenty of practice rolls. The GPS
gave me a means to compare my times to others over a set
distance. It also allowed me to see what changes to my stroke
actually made the boat move faster, as opposed to just making my heart
beat faster. Most importantly for someone who trains alone, it
provided pacing feedback, and let me play with the idea of improving my
speed at max effort (do a Google search on "Billat" and
"intervals"). Say I could do 1000m in +/- 6 minutes, which works
out to 10 km per hour. For any type of interval piece, I could
set the GPS to show speed, and could work on moving my average
speed above 10 km per hour for the piece. I never bothered using
the GPS on whitewater, though.....Ed

Folks,
I
was looking for opinions on the reliability of commercially available
GPS systems as a training tool. I have been using a Garmin
forerunner 305 for a while, but one had to be returned (problem
communicating with PC) and the replacement recently became waterlogged
while running the Lower Yough at a fairly tame level. Are there
alternatives out there to use - preferably Mac compatible? Have
others had any issues with the 305 on whitewater? Any
opinions/reviews would be much appreciated. Also, what do people
think about using GPS systems - valuable or not versus a standard
HRM? I'm very disappointed with my experiences, but would like to
hear of others.

Sounds like a great idea but I dont think you will get much of a turn out from wildwater paddlers because there are not that many to start with. I have only...

Exactly - if only a few wildwater paddlers show up, but win the sprint event, others will want to get out in a wildwater boat so they they stand a chance of...
Well I think if your goal is to get some locals involved it will be great and I sure that everyone who shows up will have a blast. Wish I was going. Have fun ...
