Herman Adler
Herman Joseph Adler, age 93, of Waunakee, died peacefully at Ellen & Peter Johnson HospiceCare Residence on Monday, May 18, 2009. He was born on April 25, 1916, to Agnes Virnig of Cross Plains, Wis. At age 5, he and his mother moved to Waunakee to join a new household of 4 stepbrothers and his adoptive father, Mathias F. Adler. He attended and graduated from St. John's School in 1930 and from Waunakee High School in 1934. After high school, Herman started out as a clerk in Adler's Store located at the corner of Main and South St. in Waunakee and subsequently for Kroger Grocery in Madison. During this time, he met the love of his life, Gertrude Roth, of Madison, and they were married in Waunakee June 17, 1941. Herman was employed as a clerk for the Waunakee Post Office and in 1953 was named Postmaster by President Eisenhower. He held this position until 1970 when he appointed himself as a Rural Route Carrier. This latter job he enjoyed right up to his retirement. Herman was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude, who died Sept. 2, 1994. Together, they raised four children who grew up loving them dearly. Herman is survived by his sister, Genevieve of Madison; his four children, Den (Judy) Adler of Janesville, Kathleen Cleven of Fifield, Elaine McIlwee of Waunakee, and Carrie Roth of Westport; six grandchildren, Eric (Shauna) Adler of Minnesota, Jody Adamski of Mazomanie, Jason Adamski of Middleton, Brad (Lisa) McIlwee of Sussex, Ryan McIlwee of Waterford, Austin Vierthaler of Westport; and six great-grandchildren, Connor, Morgan, Griffin, Kamryn, Vienna and Calais. He was preceded in death by his parents, Agnes and Mathias Adler; brothers Greg, Sylvester, Leo, Victor, and Matt; sisters Louise Kennedy and Mary Ann Baryenbruch. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. John the Baptist Church, 209 South Street, on Friday, May 22, 2009, at 11 a.m. with Monsignor James Gunn presiding. A visitation will be held at the Winn-Cress Funeral Home, 5785 Hwy Q, Waunakee on Thursday, May 21, 2009, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. and at the church on Friday, May 22, 2009, at 10 a.m. until the time of Mass. The family would like to extend a sincere thank-you to the staff at Meriter, Drs. Heather and Andy, family physician Dr. Robert Kuritz, and the staff at HospiceCare for your kindness, compassion and tender care given our dad during his illness.
