Planning to hit the park both days. Not sure about whether afternoon
or evening on Tuesday, but probably evening on Wed. Gary and anyone
else in the Charlotte area, plus anyone who wants to come up. Holla

Hey all you east coast boarders!
If you're a boarder in the Fayetteville area you should get on the
water and race! It's a perfect opportunity to meet other boarders in
the area.
I would love to be there, but I'm on the other side of the country.
I'll be back in WV for Gauley Season. See you there for the Animal
Upper Gauley Race!
For more info, contact Kevin Yount at 828.514.2374 or
events@....
Anyone in the Southeast or mid-Atlantic, come on out and race the New
River gorge. We plan to meet at the Fayette Station take out at 1 pm,
then precede to the put-in. We will float down together until the
beginning of the race section (Upper Keeney's to Double Z), then float
together down the rest of the rapids to the take out. An after race
dinner is planned at Pints and Pies in Fayetteville later in the
evening, Depending on water levels, a few people may be hanging
around on Sunday morning to take a look at Sandstone Falls further
upstream on the New or whatever else might possibly be running.
If you haven't heard, there is a Riverboarding Championship this year.
There will be races and surfing competitions scheduled all across the
country from April through September. So wherever you live, there's
probably one near you. You can even have your own competition on your
home river if you can meet the minimum requirements for competitors
and whitewater.
You can get more info on facelevel's website.

Riverboarding is also making it's debut appearance in the 2008 Gorge
Games in Hood River, OR. This is a big leap for riverboarding. I think
we can have an awesome turnout this year! Hope to see you there!
Sounds like a fun run. if the time allows I'll drive up next time she gos. if you have time, head down to the ww park in Charlotte on mon, tues, weds, I'll meet you out there.
cheers

Looks like the plateau in TN is hoarding all the good water off of these severe storms, but surprisingly it has re-gathered strength in central NC. There isn't a lot of stuff there, but I've always been keen to run the Little river (an Eno river trib) north of Durham, but I need someone to go with. I remember that someone boarded the Haw river a few years ago (named John I think), so I was seeing if anyone wanted to join me around that part of the state. I'm watching the Little and it's getting close to the level I want to see it at. Give me a call at 828 514 2374 if interested.
Got your voice mail a day late.....sorry i missed swimming in the Ocoee...
If you go over to boatertalk and look up Bill Thorton he might be able to go or hook you up w/ another to swim....I know he runs the Little.
Peace,
Ken

1. We'll break them into Men / Women / Under-16 (or Juniors, whatever they want to be called) if we get enough people from those divisions. We can list them that way on the leaderboard so people can see where they rank with their peers, sure. And if there are enough women at a race to have a totally separate category, great! Then women / youth can clean up in points and prizes. We will play it by ear - for now it's going to be everybody competing against everybody, but if the ladies and the young guns come out in force, we'll have to reevaluate things. That would be a great issue to have to address! Realistically though at this point I think it's easiest to combine everyone together.
2. Surf contest judges can't compete in that contest, obviously, and we'll make sure they are as neutral as possible. The other races are pretty straightforward and will either be at a festival or have official timekeepers etc so that won't be an issue either. Rules will be set as will judges / timekeepers, so everyone will know what to expect when they show up.

Josh,
A couple questions about the racing series you are sponsoring
1. Any chance to breakout the results into separate divisions: Men,
Women and Youth division? Not asking to change the race format or add
extra heats; just take the places and points won and provide a second
breakout by Age and Sex. I think it would encourage more people to
compete if they also were ranked according to their peers.
2. Who will be officiating the event(s) - if some race official is
also competing it could look less than fair.
Looks like a great lineup of riverboarding events!
Thanks,
Shane
Thanks for getting that started Liz! There's a couple dates that need to be changed though, especially the September ones. The end-of-the-year festival in Charlotte is the 13th and 14th, and GauleyFest is the next weekend, the 19th-21st.
1. Gorge Games, July 17-20, in Hood River Oregon. Riverboarding will be a featured event and this will be televised nationally. Press conferences for this event are Thursday, March 6th in Portland and Hood River, I'll be able to post the details after that.
2. The US National Whitewater Center's festival in September, where we'll be having our final "Championship Weekend" and will crown the winner for the whole competition season. They're expecting at least 10,000 people that weekend, so it'll be a great atmosphere to compete with the best!
So if nothing else I hope to see you all at those two events. Again, they're all posted on Face Level along with all the info about how it's all going to work.
We'll add more events if possible, just need a minimum of 8 boarders and there are some river-criterion that we want to adhere to in order to keep it competitive. You can contact me with questions (971.570.9006).
Liz, if any of the other festivals that you listed generally have a decent turnout of boarders, let's see if we can get something going at those places too!
Looking forward to seeing you all on the river this year. Go easy on me though, I'm getting old. ;-p

Hey guys! Whitewater season is just around the corner again. I updated
the calendar with events for this year. Feel free to add any if you

Liz,
Now that your trip is over - what was the best part? sickest
riverboarding run? and how long before you go back? Share some

This fall, I came down to Peru to do some riverboarding and rafting.
We planned to do 3 multi-day rivers, the Colca, the Cotahuasi, and
the Apurimac.
I ended up rafting the Colca for logistical reasons. It was a
beautiful canyon, arguably the deepest in the world, next to the
Cotahuasi river. It was technical class 5 rafting. It was awesome!
We did the Colca in 5 days. 2 days later, we put on the Cotahuasi.
I riverboarded the Cotahuasi, which had pretty low water, the lowest
our friend Gian Marco had ever seen it. It was steep, technical, and
continuous for 5 days, the 6th day being very flat and meandering.
It was definately a challenging run for riverboarding. The only way
of stopping was catching micro-eddies and scouting was pretty
difficult a lot of the time. We had a lot of raft carnage. We
flipped our paddle raft twice and lost a bunch of food. Then we
pinned our gear raft, losing more food and quite a bit of gear. It
was an epic trip to say the least.
I found out when we got off the river that I was the first
riverboarded to run the Cotahuasi. That´s pretty cool. I´m stoked.
We´re working on getting it in the Peru river registry thing right
now.
The Cotahuasi is an amazingly beautiful river. It is logistically
hard to get to, on, and out of the river, but it is a run of a
lifetime. If you ever head to Peru, be sure to get on the Cotahuasi.
Check out my blog about the trip.
http://findingconsciousness.blogspot.com/2007/11/rio-de-
cotahuasi.html
After the Cotahuasi, we took some time off the river to hike around
the jungle and go to Machu Picchu. After 10 days off, we headed to
the Apurimac river. We put in a little higher and ran the Black
Canyon section before getting to the commercial section. The entire
river was so beautiful we didn´t want to leave.
This trip was smaller than the Colca and Cotahuasi. There were only
7 of us, which made the group dynamic a little different and great.
The first 3 days were pretty flat, with little rapids in between the
long pools. Day 4 was when it got big. We ran a pretty beefy rapid,
we later found out was the Portage rapid, and that was literally the
name. Ha ha. I have a video of it on my blog. I´m underwater a lot.
The rapids were very steep and there was a lot of water. I found one
of the hardest things I had to deal with on my riverboard was the
swirly eddy lines and boils in the middle of rapids, pulling me one
way, while I was trying to go another way. The volume of water kept
increasing every day, every tributary. It was some big water in a
tight canyon.
I think the Apurimac was my favorite of the3 rivers we did in Peru.
Just the beautiful scenery, and the contrast of the white granite
boulders was amazing. The whitewater wasn´t so bad either.
Check out the blog on that one too....

The whitewater season usually winds down with the GAFF festival at
Nantahala Outdoor center - making plans to be riding the falls on Sat
Oct 27 - if you're looking for a ton of used whitewater gear and other
outdoor gear - it's worth a look.

Looks like a big crowd is going to make it out for the last scheduled
riverboarding at the US National Whitewater Center in Charlotte, NC
This time of the year the scheduled is based on how many raft trips
they have booked so it's kinda of hit or miss for the 2 Monday Nights a
month USNWC has allowed riverboarding.
If you haven't made it out to this fun whitewater park - Monday night
from 4-7pm is the time to do it
Expecting 20 or so riverboarders - should be more boarders than
kayakers!
Shane
Have fun on your rafting expedition, sounds like an amazing trip! If you do get some riverboarding in, be sure to get pics and / or video, to be considered for the FLI Awards we'll need them submitted by December 31st.
Everybody else, the form to nominate people for awards will be up in a couple days, I'll let you know!

Looking forward to trip reports
-------------- Original message from "gingerwatergirl" <gingerwatergirl@...>: --------------
I'm headed to Peru and Chile in 2 days! I'm going with a group of 13 people to run the Colca (deepest canyon on earth, 3-6 days, class V), Cotahuasi (second deepest canyon on earth, 3-6 days, class IV), Apurimac (2-4 days, class IV), and Urubamba (2-4 days, goes by Machu Pichu, class IV) rivers. Those 4 rivers should take about a month or more. So... as far as I know I might be getting a couple first descents on my board on this trip. I'll keep you guys updated with some pics n stuff.
After all the rivers in Peru I'm planning on hiking into Machu Pichu and checking that coolness out, then heading down to Chile, probably running some rivers on the way. I'm trying to stay down in Chile for the rest of the winter and get a job on the Futeulafu river being a raft guide. I'm stoked. See you in April!
I'm headed to Peru and Chile in 2 days!
I'm going with a group of 13 people to run the Colca (deepest canyon on earth,
3-6 days,
class V), Cotahuasi (second deepest canyon on earth, 3-6 days, class IV),
Apurimac (2-4
days, class IV), and Urubamba (2-4 days, goes by Machu Pichu, class IV) rivers.
Those 4 rivers
should take about a month or more. So... as far as I know I might be getting a
couple first
descents on my board on this trip. I'll keep you guys updated with some pics n
stuff.
After all the rivers in Peru I'm planning on hiking into Machu Pichu and
checking that
coolness out, then heading down to Chile, probably running some rivers on the
way.
I'm trying to stay down in Chile for the rest of the winter and get a job on the
Futeulafu river
being a raft guide. I'm stoked.
See you in April!
Hello!
New to the group and trying to locate some boarders on the East coast.
October 8th at the U.S National Whitewater center in Charlotte NC we
are trying to get as many people on the water as possible! I have on
loan a few Ripboards, so if need to demo one or try a diffrent style
come out and join us!
October 7th we have a group that is planning to run the lower Gauley in
West Virginia. Big waves and surf will make for a great day for sure!!
Let me know if you are intrested.
Cheers
Gary Brown
Charlotte, NC
Thursday afternoon - Carrie and the ASCI staff tried some ripboards on
the whitewater course. See the pics in the ASCI photo album. Look for
more riverboarding at ASCI in 2008.
I found the surf waves great as the park was running at maximum CFS
with all 4 pumps running. The eddies were not as strong as the ones
I've found at USNWC and it made for a more real river running
experience. Both parks are great for riding so if you live nearby
either one - get out and ride.
Shane
A quick post to let everyone know - a dozen or so riverboarders enjoyed
the whitewater park's surf and rapids. Checkout the latest photo ablum
and if you have pics - feel free to add.
Shane
Who said it was Fall.. the last 3 days have been spectacular in West
Virginia - hardly needed a wetsuit the water and temps were so warm.
The Fest was a big party as usual - great weather this year so no mud
wrestling but I hear there was pole dancing????
The river was great - see some pics of some newbies on the Fayette
Station (New River) - didn't have the cameras rolling when we rode the
Gauley but if you didn't make it - you missed out. See the Gauley Fest
07 album
Off to Charlotte for the Monday evening riverboarding session - should
be a good turnout.
Later
Liz,
I just finished a couple demos on the James and Potomac - both low but
still able to board. Let's hit Fayette Station only - the last time I
did the New it wasn't that low and it took awhile to run the whole
thing not to mention the legs dragging over a number of rocks.

I'll be on the gauley for the festival weekend. The Animal Upper
Gauley Race is that monday the 24th and I'll be there too. We should
do a trip on the upper of all of us boarders on Friday if possible
instead of the new river.
Let me know what's up with all of you. Would love to get on the water
with all of you.
Liz
Shane,
Just so you know... the New River is at -3 right now and painfully
low. I think a warm up on fayette station rapid would be better than
the whole lower unless it comes up.
I'm up for a warm-up run on the New River - Thursday Sep 20th -
anybody else?
